This is a competition form. Contemporary weapons have their own divisions and traditional weapons have theirs. You can't compare and say heavier bo staff are real... Anything can be used as a weapon if you know how to use them. Just enjoy the performance or try to do what she just did. Then we'll talk some more.
I am a black belt who does creative weapons, and I feel her nerves, even though I'm not doing it, it's stressful and intense, you always have this doubt in you that you might drop it, but when you start doing it, all the adrenaline kicks up and you have no time to think about what gonna happen, but time to make it happen the way you want it, and in the end, when you finish it and it turns out the way you want it, it is the most pleasant, (and tiring,) feeling you'll ever have. Success.

I admire the work and imagination that went into this display and there is clearly a lot of skill in the stances and positional use of the Bo. My only reservation is that it's not a Bo but a carbon pole, which is significantly lighter and without the inertia of the same. That makes all the difference is using it as a Weapon; which is surely its true function. Very good for all that. Well done to the young lady.

Yes I agree it has nothing to do with practical martial arts, yet I can't help but think how effective the young lady might be if she brought her physical abilities to combat. It is my sincere hope that her instructor is doing just that in her training, and that the more practical traditional skills that were developed in the field under combat and self defense conditions are being imparted as well. It is sometimes hard to find the time to combine this type of physical training and practical combat, yet it is ever the concerned instructors job to do so if their art is legitimate, or if only for sport to inform their students of this up front.
My point is that the skills that she displayed were demonstrated with a very light tool. I'm almost certain it wouldn't look as flashy if she used the actual training wooden staff which is heavier and more practical for real life. In my opinion using that would've made it much more impressive even if she couldn't execute at the same speed.

You already have offended martial arts by saying this is not a kata. Kata are simply practice processes used to build the strength, speed, and control of the body. Dancing around or not. If she can do this at least 10 times over, without missing a step, it's her own kata, and there's nothing you can say to disprove that fact.

To those saying that martial arts are supposed to be for show you are wrong it is a killing art a military art, but as time passed and traditional martial arts became no longer useful in wartime it became a way to make money. Originally it was just taught as it was but kids don't want that so "extreme"martial arts were created, were if you can backflip you're a black belt. This is entertaining and I respect her but this is no martial art.

I think this is from a rhythmic gymnastics tournament. We have the same in my country with different implements, including a ball. It's even olympic now.
Good thing I was not her center Judge. Disqualified for taking too much time before presenting form, for turning her back for extended period, for disrespectful approach to superiors, for loosing contact with the weapon, for using a less than proper weapon, for leaving the provided space, etc. Etc.
