I'm on a quest to end this dumb war people have against extreme weapons performances and other types of extreme martial arts. Like no shit you wouldn't use flashy technique in real fights, but spinning and tricking in various types of training or forms is a good way to show off your true potential and help train yourself to have better control over your weapon.
... just untill someone just hold something into the rotation or kicks you while your weapon is flying through the air. Especially with a katana the grip is very important. A loose or wrong grip would cause in the blade breaking or getting uncontrolable at contact. Also... those who create and perform those demonstrations never put the performence in a context... it is no "shadow-boxing" at all; meaning there is no imaginary interacting opponent. They could at least choreograph 50% into an interaction with an imaginary opponent. So it is basicly just juggling a weapon. You can see be observing their eyes/head. They just don't see an opponent... and that is notonly those two but all of them! Somebody who controlles his weapon (even a gun) does not look at his weapon, but at his target/opponent. That is the big difference between controll and playing arround. It's basicly rhythm gymnastic with a weapon instead of a ball or those other tools.

Being honest it's more practical since in todays world you're probably more likely to get a job doing choreography for some kung fu marvel dead head movie than to actually defend yourself with a sword, or any martial arts weapons for that matter.
It is vapid, imprecise and teaches horrible habits. For the rest of us who actually enjoy true martial arts, we have to suffer with getting lumped in with you lot.
The problem many people have with XMA is that it isn't martial arts in any remote sense. Outside of these competitions, XMA performances are regularly used as advertising for McDojos that endanger their students with low-quality "self-defense" techniques. XMA is another component of the McDojo marketing apparatus that is only allowed be considered martial arts by a general public that has been so thoroughly conned by that apparatus that they are convinced anybody swinging around something in a Gi is a legitimate source of martial knowledge. Even here, you claim that these demonstrations help you train weapon control, but just watching the sword sections reveals that to be false. None of the competitors here demonstrate even an attempt to maintain edge-alignments through their strikes. Maybe you know something I don't, but if you definitely can't execute a cut with a sword I don't think you have control of that weapon. People that do XMA regularly claim that their made-up techniques have roots in actual fighting, but any time they try to explain how they fall apart immediately. If the public-facing students and instructors in these martial arts schools are so readily willing to propagate lies, it undercuts their legitimacy. Additionally, pushing these as martial arts is deleterious to real weapons based martial arts and other gymnastic disciplines. Real weapon schools are extremely hard to come by, and that has a lot to do with the public perception of weapons usage pushed by XMA and Kung-Fu movies. I can easily find 10 Karate schools that teach XMA or creative weapons forms within a 20 minute drive of my suburban home, but the nearest legitimate weapon school is a single sport fencing club 15 minutes out. I live in one of the largest metro areas in the US and if I wanted something more martially valid or with a living lineage, like Kendo, I am stuck driving a minimum of 45 minutes each way. Traditional Kenjutsu is nearly impossible for me to access, and the only real sword school close to me is a HEMA club, and those have massive quality control issues. Gymnastics, colorguard, and even clowning are at best regarded by the general public as physically demanding, but not particularly serious pursuits. Colorguard in particular is often the butt of jokes by people who participate in other physical endeavors, despite the fact that it is more physically demanding than many of these performances, requires a lot of upper body strength and discipline, and actually has a direct relationship to real martial arts practices, unlike XMA. All of these activities are hurting for membership, especially male membership, while XMA's B-tier gymnastics routines are certainly not. XMA is only taken more seriously than them because, again, westerners have been conned into thinking wearing a Gi makes whatever you are doing more badass than it actually is. XMA is not martial arts, it debases actual martial arts, devalues other physical activities, and lets unscrupulous business people turn unwitting kids into marketing tools for their dangerous self-defense classes. There is no benefit offered by XMA that outweighs these negatives.
Lol yes, we use plastic or aluminum swords for tournaments for safety in case the user drops or throws them by accident. You wouldn’t want a real sword in those situations.

Not the same form but the same style it is a freestyle tournament of the "gum do" which is the Songham Taekwondo Korean sword art. They are competing for who has the best freestyle form.
Standard katana is 1kg,with the heaviest katanas I have ever seen in stores beeing 1.3kg. 2kg katana is a custom made thing,not historicly accurate in anyway and it's not really a katana(it's just a big katana look alike,still cool though). Tbh there is a bit of misconception that swords use to be several kg heavy,in reality most swords(not just back in the day,but also today)are rather light with sub 1kg weight. After all the point of the sword is to be a portable light blade made for cuting with quick strikes(basicly a knife with greater range),the hole idea of a sword is to be deadly without beeing too heavy and bulky to carry. If you are gonna use a weapons that's 2-5-10kg heavy,you might aswell use a powerfull blunt weapon(hammers/axes) or a pike/poleaxe of some kind,those were considered war weapons,the kind you would take into battle while wearing full armor aswell,they werent your day to day "ima carry this arround with me anywhere I go" kind of weapons. Judging from their movements I think they are using a regular katana,probably with dull edges(would deffinetly be safer for this kind of "throwing in the air" kind of performance)
I have no problem with extreme weapons. However, maintain some discipline. I don't care about realism that much but, with bladed weapons, at least lead with the sharpened end. Half the swings look like the sword would break if it came into contact because they're slicing sideways.
We need people like this to patrol bad neighborhoods at night. That would take care of the criminals. Better then any other form of security. Unless you have a tank to patrol in.

@@dannygjk It is martial arts, but it isn't fighting. Martial arts is exactly as it's written, both an art and form of combat. Exhibitions like this teach discipline, agility, and control. When coupled with training in actual combat situations, this level of control is beneficial to competitive skill. It's essentially just an exercise to become disciplined with the feeling and weight of a blade, as well as help improve reaction and instinct. I can't speak for these two, as I've not seen them outside this video, but many swordsman with this level of skill are also well versed in sword combat as well.

If you wanted relatively realistic Japanese sword techniques maybe look for kenjutsu or something. But this, the technique, the coordination, the athleticism, it's just marvellous to see the dedication in their moves.

The sword used commonly in this form is Ssangsoodo, which is very similar to a katana but has a few minor differences. On top of that, these are creative and extreme forms which are specifically created for choreography and handling. There are other categories that involve a more subtle use of the sword.

Gumdo is practiced generally much more traditionally- with focus on precision and the art of it. This is more of a subclass called creative and Xtreme that use all sorts of weapons in this way, such as the Bo staff and kamas. I can see why this is considered disgraceful to you, but know that this is not considered the standard for true swordsmanship, it is more of a challenging branch that is for show.
An opponent would'nt have just stood their watching you. The opponent ain't dumb. However, as a traditional kenjutsu high expert, who's surpassed the whole kendo school, will recognize those sword spins. I suggest they never use such tricks in a REAL FIGHT or DUEL with a someone who had extreme knowledge and skill of the way of the sword. Because as they are busy trying to perfectly catch the spinning sword, the opponent might claim theirself a body part. Those skills on thr other hand, enhance your grib, use, and even to make the sword an extension of their body. Once you have achieved that, you gotta be serious.
If they didnt say extreme in the beginning i would be more critical. I want to see a sword form not a acrobat show with a splash of sword technique and miss place screams. You suppose to scream we you attacking not when you twirling you sword and spinning it on your finger. Why we American love remixing other people cultures and for the most part make it worse.
We did "remix" any culture. Acrobatics and competition shows like this are popular in many forms of sword fighting. It's not practical nor used in true competitive sport, but to be able to have this level of physical conditioning, agility, and control over the blade helps to improve your control over a blade in a true combat situation. This is just another exercise and exhibition to show what someone who's skilled at blade work can do with a sword.
@@vernonjenkins8 that's respectable. Not everyone enjoys the same thing. It's just that too many people (not you) rule this type of exhibition martial arts to be fake or somehow inferior. But, most of these exhibitionists are also classically trained martial artists. Wushu monks do very similar exhibitions in weapon training, and I personally find it to be more interesting to watch. It's less showy and more artistic.

An opponent would'nt have just stood their watching you. The opponent ain't dumb. However, as a traditional kenjutsu high expert, who's surpassed the whole kendo school, will recognize those sword spins. I suggest they never use such tricks in a REAL FIGHT or DUEL with a someone who had extreme knowledge and skill of the way of the sword. Because as they are busy trying to perfectly catch the spinning sword, the opponent might claim theirself a body part. Those skills on thr other hand, enhance your grib, use, and even to make the sword an extension of their body. Once you have achieved that, you gotta be serious.

If they didnt say extreme in the beginning i would be more critical. I want to see a sword form not a acrobat show with a splash of sword technique and miss place screams. You suppose to scream we you attacking not when you twirling you sword and spinning it on your finger. Why we American love remixing other people cultures and for the most part make it worse.
We did "remix" any culture. Acrobatics and competition shows like this are popular in many forms of sword fighting. It's not practical nor used in true competitive sport, but to be able to have this level of physical conditioning, agility, and control over the blade helps to improve your control over a blade in a true combat situation. This is just another exercise and exhibition to show what someone who's skilled at blade work can do with a sword.

@@vernonjenkins8 that's respectable. Not everyone enjoys the same thing. It's just that too many people (not you) rule this type of exhibition martial arts to be fake or somehow inferior. But, most of these exhibitionists are also classically trained martial artists. Wushu monks do very similar exhibitions in weapon training, and I personally find it to be more interesting to watch. It's less showy and more artistic.

Hey if this is applicable in a self-defense situation, im not against it but it said weapons form,not gymnastics, acrobatics, a lot of unnecessary screaming and a little bit of weapons. As guest in the house of Asian martial arts can we make improvements on it absolutely, 100% but this not it(I'm entitled to my opinion. ) What I do support is that the participation of this foem of martial science keeps the people healthy, fit and becoming productive citizens in society.
