  • Thinking about going off the grid? Not sure what to expect? Living in the urban city all you life? Camping is the closets you have gotton to off grid BUT you need out of the city now?? Taking on this new adventure is indeed a undertaking. But its more then just MOVING your body and your things to a new rural location. Its more then just setting up the new house with solar and buying a woodstove. THE mentality...the chnage on thinking! IT is SO huge! We have seen time again new off grid couples and familes TRY to do what we are doing. And sadly, they fail. They f ail becaseu they dont have a plna. They fail becasue they expect OFf grid results with their old habits of ON GRID thinking. They invest in things that waste time and money on their new homestead. They are constantly being surprised for lack of experience and knowledge and then end up spending money they dont have. Today Starry touches on some key things for newbies. LETS get OFF the grid with your thinking and GET A PLAN!!

    thanks for sharing , all very good info. We have spent 16 years building our lifestyle here in the south after moving from a very successful home place in the north. It's hard work, almost all our meals and snacks are prepared by my wife...we built a nice size barn all by ourselves,, we planted thirty fruit trees , started bee keeping, built a blacksmith shop, took blacksmithing classes, held down good jobs, planted grapes, a variety of berries, two large beds of strawberries,...built a very nice dock all by ourselves, and we are not off grid...although we could make that happen. It is hard work and now everything is producing, and all small business ventures are humming along nicely......it's work , hard work, more work, and very rewarding..Well said Starry I hope it helps a lot of people.....

    Perfect! This is exactly why I have been doing mine a little at a time. I've had my property for years, but I rented a home so that I could follow the plan. A plan that did the vital things first, and leave out the non essential things. Just like you mentioned! I may be moving to my property in the spring, but will stay here until it's finished. I will be alone when I move there, so I want to be ready before I move in. I have lived there for months when my husband was with me, but now that I will be alone, I will hold out until I have most of my gardens in, and fruit trees planted. Then I will be fully able to live there for good. It's a real mind game when you go off grid, and people have no idea just how much of a change it is, until they live it a while. I did that, and it showed me the way it really is when you are depending entirely on yourself. Connecting with neighbors has been a real treat too. I have connections with so many things that I had no source of before getting to know them. All around me are huge farms, and it's nice to know where you can get things you need that are not 30 miles away. This is a great video, and will help so many newbies. The mind game is the hardest. For Sure! Bless, Sheila

    I grew up on a farm, we hauled water,gardened, canned, had a woodstove for heat, that was just the way of life. Didn't think anything of it. Now that I live 3 miles away from there, in town, it chaps my backside to have to pay the electric company and the water bill, etc. I miss the days that I took for granted, even though I am preparing to move back to the country. It's having a different mind frame, thinking outside the box. Having patience in our instant society, planning ahead, making do with what you have at times and constantly adding to your skill set. Great video! It's good to get folks to thinking.

    Good words to live by even for those of us that live on the grid. A covered porch on your house gives the same pleasure of a gazebo but will also shade your home reducing cooling costs and is a much better use of your money. The journey may be hard but it will be so much better with God along with you on the trip. Thanks Starry for your knowledge and help.

    One of the primary ingredients for failing in going off grid is everyone involved isn't 'completely' on board. I've watched so many videos where, usually, the dad ends up rolling his eyes and passively snipping at having to build this or do that to accommodate his wife and/or kids.
    If you have to drag an obligation off grid with you, it will never work as they'll fight constantly to return to their normality.

    I think this is one of your better videos on the mindset you need to go off grid or homestead. Their are differences in the two. Both require a lot of work (24/7) I grew up in this life style on a farm. Not easy but, I learned skill sets that have served me well (hated it at the time). Good advice you gave (Don't get the Cart before the Horse).

    I agree 100% about the wood! I am approaching my mid 70s but still cut and split wood a couple times a week on a continuous basis. The logs that I have spil this week won't be used until the winter of 2019-2020 as I have enough to last to then with the added bonus everything I burn is well and truly dried and seasoned.
    We are not "Off grid" but we are very self sufficient. Keep up the good videos...

    • @oldtimer43
      @oldtimer43 Před 8 lety +1

      All the wood I burn is now at least two and a half years old and I have found no rot whatsoever, it just about halves in weight and gives out about twice the heat compared to logs that are only a year old

    Also to add when you make the decision to break away from a urban life I believe and I know you have mentioned it also, it's a spritual calling in alot of ways. That being said it's a very real situation that everything that can go wrong will go wrong. We have had our urban home on the Market ready to sell and then the plumbing go bad to the point the floor has to be ripped out. My husband has failing eye sight, my mom was recently diagnosed with dementia. Crazy things that come at you like arrows from the enemy. Stand strong keep taking every step forward and don't give up. If you want this change like Starry says it takes a committed spirt.

    Your wet snow is freaking me out!!! I've got all of the doors open and windows open on this beautiful, warm, sunny day in the mountains of AZ. : ) I can't help wondering, "Are you warm enough?!?!?" : ) My family is out and about so I'm getting time to watch your videos and learn from you. Thank you SO much for your thoughtful, instructional videos! I've been sorting all week whenever I've had a minute, trying to decide what to bring to our homestead that we'll be moving to, and what to sell at a yard sale so I can buy the necessities! : ) Thanks for helping me stay focused on the goal of simplicity! Debate in our house right now is.... what about all the wood the boys have harvested? Do we bring it? Hmmmmmmm, : ) I think I'll just use 2 pages for each subject we're planning for. Plan A page and Plan B page : )

    Great video, we are not off grid, just self sufficient. I have "worked" on a farm for 3 years now with no pay b/c I wanted to learn,now they barter beef for my labor. We have been cutting wood for a month, we do not have a wood stove but maybe someday. People need to take baby steps before they homestead, learn to make bread, yogurt and learn how to can instead of doing it all at one time. Very good advice especially about being debt free.....

    Coming back on grid is not failing. When I came back on grid from living off grid in the Alaskan bush I realized I'd become a far more independent flexible person capable of dealing with change and the unexpected better than most. Off Grid isolation teaches you to always have plan B, C, and D in the back of your mind in case plan A doesn't work out and to "not sweat the small stuff".

    One plus today is the resources that are available to folks such as this channel and a few others. I grew up in what todaywould be called the "burbs", in time we moved into town and I never did like it. So since we had a place up north I decided to give it a shot. This back when Starry was about 5 +/-. Talk about not knowing nothing, but I survived and have only lived in town for brief periods due to work. Oh, and I just found some Serrano pepper seeds. I started looking earlier this year. Never have found them before. They will live in my "Mini-greenhouse".

I bought 20 un-occupied acres last spring and thankfully had learned a few lessons the hard way, particularly with water and living on my current acreage where it is blazing hot in summer with no escape from the heat (in part because of the design of the house). Starry a couple of things you didn't touch on is a type of income they will need to pay for things they will need to buy. Another is being able to buy the land to start with and doing so without going into debt. Because lets be honest it takes a lot of money to go off the grid. Even just building the house will cost around $50,000 and that's with you doing all the work. Another thing is you have to be healthy and in great shape to do all this work. Plus you will have to be able to work in all kinds of weather. Even when it snows 3 foot you still have work that has to be done. Animals need food and water, solar panels need to be kept clean, road needs to be cleared, hunting for food, and on and on. This life style is way more work then any job you will have. You will work from early morning till after the sun goes down. Don't think for a minute you will have time to just sit around and do nothing and enjoy watching the birds. When you first start out there will be times when the only food you have is beans and you will eat them 3 times a day till you kill something to eat. I would say talk to everyone you can that lives this life style and find out how they have done it. Make list of question of everything you can think of.

    YES! Start with small steps. Just washing your dishes by hand (no dishwasher) is a real eye opener. Imagine if you only had so muck electricity coming in, you would not want to waste it on a dishwasher, and it is a waste of water...every little step, it's important! :) Everything we do, it's so unsustainable. To become sustainable, we have to be self sufficient. And to transition to that we are going to have to not only make strides independently, but also rely on each other, and learn from the ones who are living it now, and be examples for those who will come after. :)

    I find your videos very very interesting. At our age, mid to late 70's, we don't plan to live off the grid, but our son is trying to. love all your scenery, your canning, watching the dogs enjoy their walks in the snow. I found Mr. Hilders hide tanning videos interesting. love, love love. You are so cute, but I have to ask about your hair, is it braided or dreadlocks, the front looks so neat. keep the videos coming. God Bless you and Mr. Hilder

    My husband and I are starting from scratch, really!!! We sold all our possessions to move where we are now. We just recently cleared all major debts and are looking forward to our next steps. What has been the major annoyance for us so far is other people. We are learning to keep our mouth shut when telling other people our plans. I had a women I only just met ask if she could join us and if her and her family could live on whatever land we buy. I mean come on! I do not even know you!!! My mom wants to live with us, my in laws, other friends. It is almost weird.

    Starry,
    I would add...Before even thinking about going off grid, try it where you are first. If you do the changes before you go off grid they'll be habits for when you do. Small steps not giant leaps. Educate yourself first with experience. Experience is the best teacher although skills can be taught, until you actually do those learned skills and put them into practice, the knowledge is a mute point.

      Yep a lot of urban types without experience watch these videos. The learning curve for homesteading alone is steep. Off the grid is a cliff. This is not to say it can't or shouldn't be done, but practice makes doing a whole lot easier and successful. Starry and Mr. Hilder make it look easy, but they have been doing it for decades. ( Not knocking either of them

      I completely agree. Case and point... my husband and I have been discussing moving to the country to start a homestead for a few years now. I have zero experience with this type of lifestyle so I tried to start vegetable garden last year as step towards learning to grow my own food. I would say only 10% of what I planted was succesfull, but I gained SO much knowledge from that experience. If we had been out in the country we would be in trouble, because we would rely on that garden having success in order to feed us. I'm using the time we have while still on grid to learn the skills we need to live a sustainable lifestyle in the future successfully.

    Have you ever watched the Wranglerstars channel . You all should take a look at it . What they do is they have twice a year for his viewers . By drawing names and about 10 couples are picked . And on a 2 day weekend the people come and camp out and on those 2 days . They show there viewers first hand how they are doing things . And they teach the best way to cut down trees and stuff they do on homestead. It's just something extra for there fans . Just an idea . And I'm not sure but I think they charge for it.

    I feel you can't use anyone person plans. Each person has their own needs and wants. It is best that they ask many people who have successfully lived off the grid the questions. Your plan might need some tweaking. read and research and then read and research again. Then the individual will have to make the final decision. I firmly believe in a baby step mentality so you are ensured to learn to walk properly. Don't let your new life weigh you down like a bad job does. Make it enjoyable and fun. Simple thinking is better. God Bless.

We were blessed since this wasnt a big change..but for many it will be. I see how people live..we are a nation of dependent consumers..changing to this lifestyle does take some time to integrate into...like you said baby steps!!

    Hi Starry,
    I was enjoyed your video and agreed with much of what you had to share. However it struck me as weird for someone to be commenting on what people should consider before moving off grid from an on grid lifestyle when you say that you were never dependent on the grid itself before moving to a more self reliant lifestyle ? Sounds like you are saying these has how you have always approached and nothing really change, but then try to give insight into people facing the transition.... perhaps some food for thought.

    There are many states that are adapting the liberal world view. Where you must obtain permission to do anything. NY is a classic example. To do what you're doing in up state NY would require several trips to the Governing groups to make sure that you're not doing something they don't like. Even though you may be out in the middle of nowhere.
    I'm glad to say that TX is slow to adapt these rules & regulations. So if you want to live in the middle of nowhere then you pretty much can do what ever you want. Yet these folks are trying very hard to take that away. For you can't possibly run your life better than they can.

  • @ArizonaHotHomestead
    @ArizonaHotHomestead Před 8 lety +1

    so true in that every state has different rules that affect an off grid life style.. in Arizona you have to buy permits to harvest wood and they tell you where you can harvest the wood. if you own many acres you can not harvest x percent of the wood on your land and when it comes to water you have to ask permission from the county. example is a water well must to permitted, you can not change the flow of any stream/river/wash/water way unless you get a permit. state own the water just allows you the right to use only if you get permit. lol . so many rules.

      Building a house certainly takes a source of income unless you can build it from your own land. Most off-grid or homestead people have jobs before the fact or even retain jobs after or have a skill or are able to sell stuff from the homestead (self-employed).

    Starry is going to need our help, she has been in a bad accident. Details are
    here: www.gofundme.com/starryhilder
    A GoFundMe page was started on her behalf. Even $1 would go a long way to help her
    during this crisis in her and her family's life. I created an email address that
    I will share with Starry and her family, they will receive 100% of the proceeds
    by using this address. I have listed the address at the hospital where you can
    send cards or care packages on the GoFundMe page if you prefer send something
    through the mail, just so everything is in one central location. Starry has a
    daytime job as a nurse and needs our support to help with bills and running her
    homestead while she is recovering. As you all know she also contributes
    immensely to her homestead's upkeep and her contribution will be missed. If
    everyone donates only $1 it will go a long way to help her keep things running.
    If you can't donate but still want to help, here is a poster you can
    print and share: tinyurl.com/j988m54

    one thing that crosses my mind watching all your videos is how will you two be able to sustain this lifestyle when you get older...like your late 60's and above...hunting large game up in the mountains would seem impossible ...packing that 60lb loads on your backs and walking downhill like that one video seems too physical at that age..do you plan to start raising meat livestock such as pigs or goats in the future...and hauling all that wood out of the forest...back breaking for an older couple

    • @StarryHilder
      @StarryHilder  Před 8 lety

      +swany Funny you ask that..first we arent that far off form sixty. and when most people are age are already having health issues and cant even walk a mile..we are , as you see, still hammering! we have lots of friends who live off the grid like us w ho are well over 60 out here. 70, 80 plus an still cutting wood, hauling water, and canning and such. Not everyone has blessed health, but t his lifestyle has afforded many of us good health..better food..lots of exercise, little stress...a good combination for longevity!! Of course maybe when we are 80 we wil have to curtail somethings. But we are setting up the homestead so that wil be addressed. Even such things as building the home on one level with no stairs and the ability to heat it easily and keep it cool in the summer. Even planning ahead with our wood needs is important. we look to the future and plan ahead a;lways
