  • On Sunday 9th June 2024, Historic Electric Traction and Sydney Trains ran the "Silver To The Summit" tour, taking 1980s-introduced Electric Multiple Units K95 & K88 to Mount Victoria. This was the first time a passenger-carrying K set had left the Sydney Suburban area for some time and the first time ever one had operated beyond Springwood.
In this film, we see the train at three locations on its ascent of the Blue Mountains: Leura, Blackheath and Mount Victoria. I also find time to look at the history of the K sets and squeeze in a couple of regular Great Western trains along the way.
Special thank you to the Z component of ‪@NSWRailwaysVideos‬ (A - Z Photography) without whom this film would not have been possible.

    NOW FOR THE RAMBLING
This is the second "suburban train to Mount Victoria" tour in recent memory, after the C sets in 2021 in • 158F: A March Day At M... and it made for a very interesting day out. You wouldn't think that a suburban train to the Blue Mountains would be all that interesting if you weren't a railfan, especially with AD6029 visiting Bathurst that same weekend (film coming soon) as that draws in everyone, but plenty of people were drawn to the K set and I was one!
Thanks to Zach being happy to act as my Uber driver at the end of the day (what a legend; without him this shoot wouldn't have gone ahead), I was able to capture the K set at three locations. These are all tried and tested spots and do seem to follow the pattern established in • 158F: Misty Mountain S... , but that is because they are very pretty locations. I was keen to capture the Ks under the Blue Mountains' unique catenary system, especially as those 1957-installed wires are on their last legs anyway, but also they look cool. Mount Victoria and Leura are as pretty as ever, especially Mount Victoria, and I was able to squeeze in some other trains too; having a Mariyung around provided a nice contrast.
As for history, there's plenty. I cover the etymology of the name "Katoomba" when I visit it for WT27 XPT, but also the history of the K sets. For a humble suburban silver train, the last revenue-service one in operation and ST's oldest operational class, they have quite an interesting story to tell. Who would have guess these were the G sets' precursors?
All in all, a bit of a different film to what you'd usually see in the Blue Mountains, but certainly a unique one. A big thumbs up to Historic Electric Traction for putting it on of course as it looked like everyone was enjoying themselves.

Good video. That XPT is nice and smokey. I love the smell of burnt diesel in the morning.

Great history narration, I learned a few things from you, well researched. Looks like a good turn out of enthusiasts for the event. Just love the Bagpipes at the end of the video!
