Jeff Mills used this a lot back in the 90's, Dan Bell(DBX) too.
Rod Modell / Deepchord too
Cool that you are demoing a relatively obscure piece of vintage gear. I have one of these. It's a pretty useful bit of kit in my setup. I picked it up used for cheap. I thought it might sound like my TG 77 which has been a workhorse, and the centerpiece of my live rig since I bought it in the early 90's. It doesn't sound like the 77. but the two compliment each other nicely. Love the channel. Synth on!
This is a great little machine! I owned one 16 years ago and recorded a few tracks with it. Replaced it with a SY22 because I wanted a keyboard.
Lol I I replaced the sy with this because I wanted a smaller footprint!
Thanks for demoing the TG33, James. Some of the sounds stored in this little beastie are amazing.
Yes their real classics!
the vector recorder is amazing
keep on droning on james loved your ghost synth story
Very nice demo. Got this machine too.
Nice
Cool fact: The high quality joystick can be used as a MIDI controller for other gear.
Saw one in a pawnshop for 60$ and should have grabbed it up,now its gone....
Oh well,if I see one again it'll be purchased, impressive fm desktop
R Dm I never see any good synth gear in pawnshops
Romplers are still useful for live performaces because of the average sounds that cover a lot of genres...
The effect sections onboard help to sound 'like the record' as well...
Something similar happens with the Virus keyboard stuff for electronic music...
One type of synthesizer I’ve not yet played or recorded with (as of December 2022) is one that features vector control like this one. For some unknown reason, the TG-33 is the lone vector synth that has tempted me. Must be a combination of its SY soundest (would like a reminder if that includes the SY electric grand piano sample), its vector control, its compact shape and its affordability.
I really need to get mine fixed.. Such a lush bit of kit.
I just bought a Proteus 1 XR for 100.00 bucks because I was so impressed by Espen Kraft review of it. This one is sooo nice tooo but almost a grand in Japan. I feel samplers and rompers are rising in prices. I mean the Emu sampler Esi32 was 100.00 and now it's 250ish?
used to love my SY22 the keyboard version of this James, had extra controller fo live gigs the perfct synth at the time now got MODX8 beautiful synth again
Yet another synth I should have bought when they were going used for $50 instead of $500.
I had one and it died in 2000. Now they are selling for north of $500 here in Australia. Fortunately I got a good sampled vst of it so I can recreate my old jams haha
Hello, are you using the factory internal sounds for this demo? I can’t seem to find these sounds on my tg33. Thank you!
Yes, I am using only the factory sounds. The tg33 doesn't have the exact sounds.
what setting is the one that appears in 4:00?
If you mean the preset, I can't tell you. It's been awhile and I don't have the unit anymore. I got it second hand and I am not even sure if the presets in it were original or altered.
@@PureAmbientDrone so sad, that is the sound i've been trying to find!
Wow I thought it was a drum machine at first based on how it looked.
Ha ha yeah I can see why lol!
How would you rate the TG33 compared to the D-05?
They're both great sounding machines for some reason I like the 12 bit DAC sound on the tg33 better.
You still own this, James?
Yes I do!
Hi.I dont have that sound before the last one.Could you please share it?
I no longer have this synth as I often buy synths to flip back into the market. If only I could keep them all. I think that patch may have been one left by the original owner.
@@PureAmbientDrone I see.Thank you.
Cool, I have the TG33, and can't figure out how to midi it to my Korg microkey 25 keyboard controller, can you help? Thanks!
It should be just setting up the midi channels to match. Not sure what problem you are running into. Try finding the manual to each of them and refer to the midi instructions. I hope it works out for you.
@@PureAmbientDrone thanks for your reply, do you think I need a midi/usb host?
@@alembicfunkbass Mini hooked right up to my Arturia Keystep. But I am not sure why it won't interface with the microkey?
@@PureAmbientDrone my Korg controller only has a USB TYPE B port.
@@alembicfunkbass OH! OK yeah I know what your meaning now, sorry just had my caffeine LOL You need a MIDI DIN connection for the TG33. If you have any other hardware synths you can connect those to it too.
Cheap = It sounds good even though it is a module version of a lower model. Better than the higher model SY77.
I love FM synthesis. The FM synthesis engine can do all lot interesting sounds besides the twinkly electric pianos everyone loves. It is definitely great for ambient. I think Hiroshi Yoshimura was the probably the king of FM ambient music.
There are a few interesting sounds in this unit, but a lot seem useless unless you want a weird sound for a video game score. Can it load sounds from other machines?
No, it cant
This isn't really an FM synth, the FM part is very poor in that there's only 2 parameters to edit without an editor. Even with an editor the extra FM functions are a pita to edit as they're illegal messages that make the machine cough and splutter. The magic in this device is the vector system, programming them and stretching them out :)
I guess a volca fm does pretty much the same
No it does not!
this synth is a rompler with fm synthesis on top, but it's not really that deep to edit and stuff. the volca fm is a full on fm synth, definitely better if ur interested in fm more than the vector synthesis of this one.
