Before New York passed a law against demolishing historic buildings and sites in 1967 many beautiful and historic gems have been lost forever.
Ik-Ive seen SO many pics of amazing homes
It's a real shame that so may were lost, but there are also a lot of historic mansions still standing if you know where to look.
Fascinating and sad how so much money was poorly managed and how the sisters didn't know about the value of the fittings of the house. I'm glad that the two sisters were still able to live what seems to have been a fairly comfortable life after the passing of their second brother. This video is a lesson in being and staying informed about finances and in the need for financial planning.
You just have to appreciate, the new "improved" building that was built after demolition sooo convenient 🥺.
The relationship between Ginter and Pope sounds suspiciously like the one between Sir Thomas Lipton and shop assistant William Love. I had never heard about this house, so thank you for the information. Like many of these Victorian era mansions, it would probably look much better with the removal of about 80% of the bric-a-brac. Excellent video.
How dare you. The clutter is what shows how much the owner traveled and showed their wealth.
Seriously, not everyone wants a minimalist look.
95%
@@christinebenson518 I don't like minimalist at all, but I also do not like that you can't see the walls or furniture because of all the stuff all over them. This was a Victorian decorating taste; so you think that people after the Victorians stopped traveling and collecting since they didn't load excessive amounts of things in their rooms?
I guess it takes all kinds. My grandma used to say" it's a good thing we're all different." I like the Victorian style of decorating. It's definitely not for everyone, but as my grandma said.....
@@megfuchs9425 I have to say that I agree with you. Either that, or everything would be totally boring.
So many beautiful grand homes have been lost to developers. And in Europe people live in homes much older!
Nothing like getting started by a Sugar Daddy....Pope was a very pretty boy! (Who realized and gained the value of the gold fixtures?!?!?) The Ginter Mansion at 901 West Franklin Street in Richmond belongs to VCU now.
I currently live Bushwick., Brooklyn
38 years now. Many big houses on Bushwick Avenue. 4:00 That building address is 871 Bushwick Avenue
From Ginter's Bio page.
"Ginter and Pope remained lifelong bachelors, both living in Ginter's home, until Pope's premature death in 1896.[27][28] Pope was buried in a plot in Hollywood Cemetery that Ginter had reserved for himself.[29] While the intimate details of their relationship are unknown, Pope's obituary said he "lived quietly with Major Ginter, for whom he possessed the most ardent affection."[30] And Ginter's obituary said he "never pointedly sought" the company of women"
Within 30 seconds of the video it was obvious what the nature of their relationship was. He was so impressed by the charming 14 year old that he invited him to come live at his estate in Virginia, then he became VP of his company...
@@hhodjr1484 we have all learned to read between the lines lol. As a side notge - 14 yrs? Seriously?
TLDR: Pope stole prematurely dead pedo sugar daddy’s estate from daddy’s sisters, built a mansion in Bushwick with solid gold chandeliers and a notorious white peacock in the yard that screeched all night long.
Pls continue to upload more new videos on historical mansions and estates in the United States
Back in the day, there were women who were put into asylums if they didn't go along with their male siblings about what to do with inherited property. ~~ Thank you for another interesting video.
Now we just elect crazy women to Congress.
And a rounded corner on the new structure as an homage to the demolished building!
Park Slope , Brooklyn resident here. I would love to learn more I live not far from the whimsical Litchfield Villa. Thank you for this video. Heartbreaking about the light fixtures.
Hold on hold on hold on. Wealthy old man, "impressed" by young delivery boy invites him to come live with him... and then he "eventually becomes VP of American Tobacco" Feel like you sort just glossed over that...
It’s a “family friendly” website! 🙄
Please highlight more houses from Brooklyn. Thank you
Hi ,so surprised to see the grandeur and expenses spent on the interior especially the gold chandeliers all around ,nice video all the very best from your sincere subscriber 😀
I like this one, good job Ken! But I believe that I heard that those gold chandeliers were tossed out with the trash when the house was demolished. They were so tarnished and some had been painted white and nobody was around who knew that they were gold to tell anybody. When it was discovered that the chandeliers Were more valuable than the house there was a scramble to try and find them in the city dump. And with very little information to go on as to where they could possibly be in the dump, they were never found and are supposedly still there, a treasure waiting to be discovered someday by somebody. Am I correct About this do you know or I have I mixed up my story with something else?
oh my , where are those chandeliers now ???
Found this video very interesting. Thanks. Still waiting on Governor's mansions.
My mother’s family was from Brooklyn. I would love to hear more about it’s rich history. My maternal grandfather grew up on a large farm in Yonkers. Do you have anything on Yonker’s growth and development?
Great video Ken! And I am a New Yorker. I would be very interested in more programs about Brooklyn. Thanks.
Informative video - thank you. Yes, would love to hear more about Brooklyn, especially Brooklyn Heights.
ALL of your videos are just wonderful! From BerkeIey to Brooklyn, and Beacon Hill to Boise to Baton Rouge, (and any points in between), I look forward to what more you have in store for us! 🙂
I have always liked that type of stairway, very nice home inside.
Hope someone figured out the chandeliers were real gold before they ended up in the flea market
Surely, the sisters DID NOT... A Row house over a Detached Home...WOW
They’ve never been found
Like the picture on the wall at 1:30 :D
I get so upset the stupidity of building such extravegant homes, and not taking care of them. The house could still be standing, and that horrible building that occupies that church could be somewhere else!
History will say they were roommates 😂❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
True.
Peacocks ARE surprisingly loud lol
I'd love to see videos on the Henry Evelyn Pierrepont house and the John H. Prentice house. Or really any of the lost mansions of Brooklyn Heights.
The light fixtures of gold had me dying. That's where the money went. Hilarious!
How can this place cost more than Biltmore
Gold chandeliers?
Holy Toledo!
Ha ha, what happened to the chandeliers?
Sisters learned the hard way that you reap what you sow😮
Too much stuff! Many of these mansions from back in the day are so very cluttered with artwork and other decorative items it completely overwhelms.
I wonder what happened to all the light fixtures.
What happened the the gold chandeliers?
Brooklyn is dripping with fabulous original brownstones; unfortunately, many are being gutted and relined with Sheetrock and recessed lighting; they call it gentrification.
What happened to the chandeliers? Any idea?
I can’t watch videos like this. The waste and destruction of all that beauty upsets me too much! I’d rather not look at it. 😢
I wonder what did become of all of those solid gold lighting fixtures? I would think whoever bought the house from the sisters had them removed and replaced with more practical fixtures, prior to disposing of the house again? Does anyone know for sure?
It's too bad the sisters themselves weren't aware of the individual value of the content of this fine home. Maybe they would have been able to keep the house to live in and share together? Ah, the road not taken!
You see this around the world but more often in the USA where they tear down historical buildings and houses to make a profit or they have simply been abandoned really sad.
Im with Andrew B, such a shame. All the more reason why communication is imperative.
so what happened to the gold chandeliers?
I am sick to my stomach seeing that new building!! What a sad story!! Greed and money couldn't keep the brother from dying young either.
What happened to the gold?
I think you meant indulging, not divulging.
I enjoyed your story as always, and loved the gay subtext hinted at. Good to know. The house was hideous and no architectural loss the the world but I'm wondering who discovered the chandeliers were solid gold and what became of them. A mystery story there!
whats worse, your brother spending a lot of money but still supporting you, or ripping yourself off and selling everything for a fraction of its worth
So what happened to the chandeliers and art?
!
Another interesting video. Well done.
Two friendly suggestions:
(1) Use the term "row houses" not "row homes." They are houses -- apartments can also be homes; plus, the word "homes" in such a context is vulgar. That's Realtor vocabulary!
(2) In cases where the house is demolished (and say it is demolished, not just "replaced"), I would like to know what happened with the interior woodwork, light figures, fittings, etc. In the case of the Pullman mansion, it was most interesting to hear about the auction that took place before the house was demolished.
John Pope was buried in the plot that was actually purchased by Lewis Ginter for himself as Pope died 1 year before Lewis.
Who discovered the gold and cashed them in?
It's not good news for any Mansion that an organization obtains it. Those sisters missing out on that gold is a scandal of it's own. Whomever got those and what they did with them is a story I'd like to hear.
I think "practical" buildings for the elderly aren't usually ideal for them, being austere, gloomy and isolating. Then, a church! That mansion was lost for the usual reason. Too expensive to retrofit for modern needs and HVAC/Plumbing. Upkeep would usually doom them.
This story starts out with weird vibes....were they gay?
um...without a doubt. But how did he get away with under age boy and where were the boy's parents? It said in the video when one died, the obituary said he did not enjoy the company of women.
@@johnball8758 Underage? In that era they married early.
Evidently. It happened back then too.
How much old money was just flushed down the toilet...its almost too stupid to believe.
I wouldn't say this story was whimsical. Nothing whimsical about the rich old man using the ol predators ruse of adoption/companionship, to take advantage of a poverty stricken young boy, for his own pleasure and ego.
