  • DISCLAIMER - FOR MSFS SIMULATION ONLY - DO NOT USE FOR REAL WORLD FLIGHT PROCEDURES - Disclaimer: The author of this video is not providing advice for flying aircraft in the real world. The video is intended for the use of gamers by providing advice on how to play the game Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS) Flying the King Air 350i from John Wayne Airport to Santa Catalina Island off the coat of California. This is a challenging landing because there are no ILS or RNav landings for the runways at Catalina. There is a VORDME at Santa Catalina (SXC) which can be used for VOR-A or VORDME-B but I have used Approach (automatic) in the flight plan. You will need to use Little Navmap to create a flight plan and export it to MSFS because Santa Catalina airport is a private airport and does not seem to be available in the MSFS World Map feature to create a flight plan. Catalina airport can have poor visibility, so using real time and weather makes it a challenge to land the King Air 350i on a runway that is just long enough for this aircraft (landing runway requirements for the King Air is 2981'). There is a 2.1% downslope beginning a few hundred feet after the approach markings for Runway 04. Because of this, Runway 22 is preferred for landing with an upslope. The runway is also only 60 feet wide, which is slightly more narrow than typical runways. When landing on either runway with a strong headwind, you should be aware of downdrafts caused by the surrounding terrain and steep cliffs. Prepare for power changes to compensate for the downdrafts, and be ready to go-around.
The airport is located at the center, and top, of Catalina Island at 1,602 feet above sea level. Its single, 3,000 X 60 foot runway is called the "airport in the sky" for good reason. On either end, there are dramatic cliffs rolling down Catalina island into the Pacific Ocean below. While the airport is primarily used for general aviation, there are daily freight flights to and from the mainland.
Catalina Island's only airport is privately owned and located 10 miles (30-minute drive) from Avalon, and 13 miles (45-minute drive) from Two Harbors.
The airport is open to the public and is primarily used for general aviation. There are no scheduled passenger flights to and from Catalina Island.
