The connecting key to understanding John Sugar is his need and successful ability to find missing persons as is his relationship with his sister Djen.
Either his sister was a victim or became so corrupt by humans that she became an abductor since she isn't part of the current group sent to only observe humans and not hurt them.
I found it interesting that when the limo driver dropped him at the new potential client's house (Olivia's grandfather) he told the limo driver that the stop over didn't happen. At that point I speculated that he was hiding his involvement in this case and wondered why and from whom.Many of the clues in each episode are layered and hidden within other clues. His 1966 Corvette was referred to as an "old relic" by his handler which made me think he was using it when it was new and that appeared to be contradicted by his current age unless he and the group have been on our planet at least more than a half century , All the clues are sprinkled throughout each episode as to John Sugar and noticing them becomes fascinating excercise on it's own.
Do you think we'll see a lot more clues after the season ends, ones that perhaps we missed? It does feel like a lot of thought went into almost every part of the story. -Matt
Hey, guys! Important questions: where's Charlie and what's up with Sugar's glowing blue eyes at the end of the credit sequence in episode 7. They didn't glow in any of the other episodes! Any one else getting strong Fringe vibes from this show? That show also featured a group of Observers, as well as a typewriter used to communicate with a parallel Earth!

This episode had me on the edge. The scene between David's father and grandfather was really powerful. And then John and Henry talking about becoming more like humans is such a powerful statement. We become the sum total of what we digest and who we surround ourselves with. The psychology of this show and subliminal points i find compelling. I think Jess is right that there is something else going on that the meeting was setting something else in play. Henry's betrayal broke me because Sugar believed him as a true friend.
I could be wrong but i feel like sugar represents innocence the good and pure and how when we are exposed to the toxic ugly of society we can easily be robbed by that ugliness and become exactly what we hate. And it's insidius. We don't see it right away but eventually it becomes clear.
Enjoying this ride with you guys... i really want to see what happened/ happens with Olivia.
Do you think we'll at least get some answers? I wouldn't be shocked if we are stuck with some sort of pretty-annoying cliffhanger at the tail end. -Matt
@MattandJessTV I can't tell. I'm wondering if they will have a new season. 🤔 I find it hard to believe they can wrap this up in one episode. It's not impossible yet outside the realm of my imagination. But if they do. I hope it feels complete. I can't call it now. It's been so wonderful. I would hate to have it end incomplete.

I don’t agree with the Henry speculation but acknowledge he’s got some sort of alternative agenda but the big situation is John’s sister Jen!! I don't think she could be his sister because she's the daughter of Seigel.

Unexpected Surprise - This Is An Excellent Show! I love the moodiness, the film noir vibes, the costume design, the black and white movie throwbacks plus, the double entendre of Sugar no longer being able to see things as clearly in ANY of his connections! Can you be a “good guy”, if you aren’t even human?! Where did Sugar’s tremors go? I have so many questions 🤔 This show is relatable, edge of your seat, and makes you ponder! Sugar was exactly what you said, this unexpected surprise! I thought it was going to be a straight forward detective show but it was so much more then that and it was done beautifully. I really hope for more. We won't be covering Parish, but we have a lot of other shows coming up: Criminal Minds, The Boys, House of the Dragon, Evil and The Bear! - Jess

My nana's black cake recipe is by taste so my measurements are never the same, her recipe was literally just a list of ingredients LOL. she always said if the spoon stands up it's ready hahahahaha. This show started out as a show I started watching in the background, and has turned into one of my faves I’m currently watching. I’m glad you guys brought up Melanie, because their relationship is my favorite part of the show. I keep thinking he’s going to tell her, because he keeps bringing up his secret, or they’re saving it for next season like you guys said. I actually feel invested in this show and I don’t feel that for many recent shows.
I did watch Grey Matter too last night and I personally loved it because they got me invested in the characters relationship early. It’s sort in the wheelhouse of constellation, but so much better, IMO. A lot of people liked that show …just a little on the slow side for me.
Great review as always. I wouldn’t mind sugar being stretched to a second season just because the storytelling and (alien) concept is so cool and well done.
I do think Olivia is probably there if they plan on wrapping it up this season. Talk about a Dexter basement. Yikes!

First off, I like both Matt and Jess' theories. This series has surprised me, and is so, so good. However, I keep seeing announcements of Colin Farrell being cast in new projects, and hope that doesn't mean "Sugar" will not have more seasons. Fingers crossed.
Here's my cray-cray theory: The Alien Mission is to learn as much about humans as possible to...PREVENT humans from infecting/destroying the Aliens, on their home planet. Which has already begun.
To back up: Aliens visited/explored Earth in the past, then returned to their home planet. The Aliens who visited Earth and returned, however, were "changed": more violent, immoral, corrupt.
Tracing it back to the visit to Earth, the Aliens send the Sugar Team to earth to "observe" humans, and discover what is the corrupting factor...Earth or the humans. If they can find the answer, the Aliens can cure those already infected, and prevent it from spreading to more Aliens on their home planet.
What's happening to Sugar (and others? Sugar's sister?) on earth is he's becoming more human, despite the injections that is a vaccine intended to slow down any infection from Earth/humans. The progression of Sugar's infection is manifest in his ability to kill; just like humans. The Alien leadership (Henry?) either sends "home" or has killed any Alien infected with the human "demon seed" [my words]. That's why Sugar was sent by Henry to the address--where the guy tried to kill him.
Bottom line: the Aliens aren't the Bad Guys--humans are.
Sugar is "infected" and becoming more human, and the season will end with Sugar no longer taking injections; and allowing himself to become more & more human. This, of course, means he will fully "break" with his Alien team, and accept all the pros & cons of being a human on earth. The series could end on this note--or have more seasons.
That is a fun theory! Isn't it almost that you want to keep your possible enemies closer? I really just wonder when we're actually going to get a better scope of the alien operation, and how much time will be devoted to really laying out a ton of the clues for us. -Matt
First of all, I love the opening music , all jazzy & blues, beautiful. And of course, it goes along perfectly with the old movies Sugar loves. What kind of typewriter was that?? Clearly, communicating something but what?? Weird. We haven't heard how Sugar's sister died, maybe she's still alive actually, just a thought. I definitely think Henry is one of the bosses & he was the gloved guy lifting the stairs where Oilivia is. I think this group is the most powerful on Earth, not our government. So I have no idea what the true story is.
Now, how much do you think we'll learn in the finale? I think we'll find out some stuff on the aliens, but not everything. -Matt

I don't think that the senator's son took Olivia. I think that the senator's son kidnapped and tortured underage hookers, who were supplied to him by Stallings. Through Stallings the aliens found out what the son was doing. When Sugar will open the hatch in episode 8 I believe he will find an underage hooker and not Olivia. The aliens want Sugar to believe that the son kidnapped Olivia and made up that story about the Senator knowing about their existence. It just so happens that Olivia is being held in a similar place by the aliens. They want to send Sugar home and will continue their mission. If the aliens are really going back home then its pretty obvious that they are not planning to ever return back again.
Is there still a super-secret agenda beyond just Olivia? It's such an interesting spot that we've arrived in at this point. -Matt

Yeah, I think the show is really interesting and how about if they just leave John Sugar behind and this was the set up for the foundation of the next season or two. Just thinking he is the most interesting part of the show

Maybe the serial killer kidnapped Djen and discovered she was an alien while killing her

I'm with Matt on that the Aliens have another agenda, I think Sugar & maybe others of them are unaware though.
Sugar will end up estranged from them & at odds with them.
I hope the Olivia story is wrapped up, I think she's dead.

Your analysis of him not being invited to the meeting is totally forgetting that they tried to collect him. Wasn't invited? "Yeah, look... I know a bunch of us just went after you so that you'd stop, and you ran away... but could you just come in?"
if they are being summoned back by the higher ups he would've been invited/told no matter the circumstances. unless they were planning to force him to go back to his planet and that doesn't seem like it was the case, there was no reason for someone like Henry, who he trusts, not to tell him there is a meeting because they are being called back. - Jess

Seemed like Team E.T knew that taking the Olivia case wouldn't be a good thing yet Sugar is still left to take the case.
I mean really, couldn't Team E.T just give Sugar a ticket to a film festival to watch some movies till they all take off back into space???

My first reaction after watching this episode was "what the fuck man?! Sugar is a fucking alien?!" To me it's kinda bullshit, mixing up a PI story with suddenly.... aliens !!! It looks like the screenwriters didn't know what else to write so okay why not make Sugar an alien, he and his group ! Again : what the fuck ?! But that's only my point of view you know. Apart from that you two are right I guess about the Siegel's story being wrapped up next time, and about the meeting they're all have except the main character...🤔 Interesting video, good job 👍

It's possible that their planet has become uninhabitable. Also, earth in the long run is uninhabitable for them as well. I believe that their true mission is to create a mutant race that will be able to live on earth. A 2020 Hulu film, What Lies Below had this plot. The greater good philosophy is Utilitarianism. She is his sister.
