      a few things
      -this was an important conversation that everyone would benefit from listening to. titles can be hard to come up with and i just don’t feel the current one does it justice.
      -interesting endorsement for Airbnb. many things more important than money. i personally wouldn’t airbnb any of my places bc i’m not risking body lice, mold, drugs, etc. contaminating my home. also, the liabilities nowadays with criminals putting tiny hard to detect cameras in public washrooms, hotels, dressing rooms, Airbnbs…not worth it IMHO
      -you keep reminding people to subscribe. is there a possibility that the tally CZcams shows is inaccurate? i’ve heard other channels mention a problem with subscriber numbers unrealistically varying up and down by thousands each day. i’m not sure if that’s true bc i have no way of verifying that but heard it a few times from a few different doctor/health related channels

    As a doctor I’m a bit concerned that in a podcast this long about TSS there was no mention of the actual cause of TSS which is toxins caused by bacteria building up on the tampon and getting into the bloodstream rather than the chemicals on the tampon itself.

    • @alysonlee
      @alysonlee Před 9 měsíci +319

      I could see if the explanation was having the chemicals on the tampon could interfere with the microbiome of the vagina and thus creating more propensity for a toxic overgrowth.

      @thesender681 tampons are put inside the vagina to absorb the blood and until it gets full and the women takes it out, bacteria grow in it because they're in a humid, warm and rich environment to thrive in. The vaginal walls are very irrigated with blood vessels and absorb those bacteria and the toxins they produce. All that, along with the chemicals that are in tampons go into your bloodstream and make you ill.

    A note her ladies, TSS is NOT ONLY caused by tampons. Anything (menstrual cups, birth control devices, sponges, etc) stuck up there can install bacteria that can then cause TSS. It’s not about the tampon. It’s about not leaving anything stuck up there for many many hours!

    • @ladytess23

      I never did like or use tampons when I was young. I did however use a birth control diaphragm. It was the first time I used it when I started feeling uncomfortable and sore. I had a fever and just felt unwell. Something told me to take the diaphragm out. Thankfully I started feeling better but it did take a few days to feel 100%. Ladies be careful!!

      Okay. To not go into too much detail, though, we don't abrade our natural resistance with medical grade silicone. We can introduce bacteria in a number of ways and if it's because of menstruation then the problem is hidden away right up there. It's the perfect environment, for bacteria to multiply, if we don't have our own cells there to protect us. I think that's why certain device types are more risky, for inducing toxic shock, than others.
      The thing with using cups is that it's not always possible, certainly in a lifestyle where the woman is always on the move and away from her own bathroom, to wash them between uses. We get our hands as clean as possible, take it out, empty it, pop it back in and then wash up. The opportunity for introducing bacteria, if the process is this, is really limited. We can do it all with one clean hand and keep the other one for needing to touch the other things around us between visits to the soap.
      Even though I'd already had sepsis (strep throat sepsis), and been in a coma with organ failure and all that, I didn't start using cups because of considerations about toxic shock. It's more that my life was at the mercy of the pad and I wanted an augmentation that wasn't going to end up with my output being a huge and horrific mound in landfill. So it was washable pads and cups with the cups doing all the heavy lifting.
      I'm getting into evangelist territory.. It is important, though, to understand the difference between things that are meant to soak and things that are meant to catch.

      It's because it's rare, you are much more likely to have anaphylaxis or cancers or a whole host of other problems. TSS isn't caused by tampon use, you could get it just from an ingrown toenail getting infected and the bacteria is often transmitted in hospitals during hospital stays.

The fact that this isn't a public health concern/announcement is extremely suspicious, deadly, and diabolical. Imagine being a single father, with no idea about girls' things, doing your best, and trying to help her, not understanding the risks. Maybe she buys them, not feeling comfortable to talk about it, and then this happens. This should be a WELL KNOWN ISSUE. But profits over people, as always.

Although I believe cups (made out of silicone and washable) are still the best option so far. Also, TSS is only mentioned in tampon's boxes where it says it only happens if you don't change it frequently, which is obviously a lie.

    I almost died from toxic shock when I was 19. My body was essentially poisoned and started shutting down. If I had been older it would have killed me. It took months to recover. At first the ER sent me away because they thought I had the flu and the next day I came in, near death and they realized it was not the flu. A very traumatic time in my life. It is amazing how you never hear about this topic.

    A few years ago I worried for over a week I had a forgotten tampon inside me (the string had completely disappeared). I felt far too embarrassed, but was pushed to go to doctor. I was apologising profusely for "wasting her time", and apologising to her for having to do the check. She indeed found one - she said there was little pocket at side of cervix it had found its way into?? She also advised it happens more than you would think, so if you are ever in ANY doubt, like I was, please just go and get the situation checked immediately, don't feel you are just wasting people's time.

      When I was 24 I was pregnant with my daughter. People don't think 🤔 about the consequences before they do something. Many women say that tampons are cleaner but people put profits over people not caring about someone dying because money is always more important than people. What a waste of money to get something I don't use because sanitary pads are more comfortable. People sometimes don't get what I normally use and I am going to be more specific about things so people know what to get. I don't care how personal it is. If you got to have them you got to have them.

      While TSS is very rare, it can be fatal or have long-term health consequences. We believe that period care products should be regulated as medical devices, because they go inside the human body. This is why we're the first tampon brand to be certified under ISO13485 and GMP - these are the same standards as those applied to heart stents, brain implants and artificial limbs.

    I remember Lauren’s story, the last I heard, was that while Lauren was in the hospital, her mother began a massive lawsuit involving Kimberly Clark Corporation. The manufacturer and distributor of the tampons Lauren used was “Kotex Natural Balance tampons” as well as the grocery stores Kroger and Ralph's where sued. The fact that Lauren doesn’t mention the brand/distributor of the tampon/company, which Lauren previously disclosed, tells me she was successful in her lawsuit. Probably had to sign a NDA of some sort. I wish Lauren health and happiness.

I 100% believe this lady didn't use it properly and I'm sorry for what happened to her. This is a very shocking story but I'm a bit sad that she doesn't mention alternatives. For her, even pads are bad because of the chemicals in them. But it's a big difference if your skin is in contact with them or your mucous lining. So pads can be an alternative as well as menstrual underwear. Don't get me wrong: I'm also an ambassador for fewer chemicals in our everyday products and food but not everyone has the resources to buy e.g. organic products/produce. So at least provide the people with the best options that are available atm.
    Also: TSS itself isn't caused by chemicals, it's a bacterial infection that's caused by either Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes or Clostridium sordellii. That's why everyone (also men and children) can get it if they're suffering from open wounds. I think that didn't really get through in her answer to the question of what causes it. The chemicals might add up to it but the main problem is the bacterial infection.

    • @MiriamOrozco677
      @MiriamOrozco677 Před 9 měsíci +24

      I'm a health professional. I agree that chemicals can cause cancer but not TSS. But I do believe tampons can cause TSS in other wait, because they are bacteria reservoir,a mix of blood and vaginal fluids inside a warm moist cavity like a vagina, all this together can cause fast grow of bacteria in the tampon,and as infection goes ascendent,can cause pelvic Infection that if go untreated can spread and provoque a sepsis or generalize infection. If the woman have an undetected vaginal infection like Clamydia, the risk for TSS is even worse. There are ecologic pads made with natural fabrics,you can wash them after use and reuse them. There are other factors like weak immune system that will made easy to get the infection. I was lucky I didn't got it,even after using tampons all my life,but the risk is there.I think tampons can be the cause of pelvic inflammatory disease which is very commons ,or salpingytis it's tubes inflammation and infection that can lead women to become sterile.

    It should be noted that TSS is a bacterial infection that isn’t necessarily caused by the chemicals in tampons but how it can increase risk of TSS and bacterial build up. This is why we need to put more research in women’s hygiene products instead of shying away from the conversation of menstrual health and periods.

    Please Read! I’m an MD and need to clarify the following information.
    Toxic shock syndrome is caused by an overgrowth of bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus. Hence, the bacteria releases exotoxins which enter the bloodstream via a tear in the vagina wall. This could be caused by the frequency and placement of the tampon. Our body reacts to the presence of the bacteria’s toxin upon entering which can lead to a multi organ failure if not treated immediately. Therefore, a tampon creates a suitable environment for the bacteria to grow. Meaning the material of the tampon did not caused the condition. But rather our body’s immune reaction to the presence of the exotoxin from the bacteria.
    Note: Do not take any health advice or accept medical information if not from a healthcare provider.

    I have no words for the pain that Lauren has experienced with TSS and losing her legs, and I truly can't imagine what that is like. Thank you Lauren for sharing your story! Some education: Tampons do not cause TSS, but they do increase risk. I am not an expert, but here's some research: TSS happens when certain bacteria (staph and strep) grow and multiply. Changing a tampon too often (especially pulling it out dry) can create internal cuts that increase your risk of bacteria getting trapped in the cuts and multiplying. However leaving your tampon in too long can also increase your risk of TSS because the bacteria uses the tampon as a medium on which to grow and can grow in abundance. If this particular bacteria becomes unmanageable (trapped in cuts or growing in abundance) then it can turn into a systematic infection. If someone's particular body doesn't feel it has the right immunity to fight off the infection, the body will begin to shut down. This bacteria grows naturally during menstruation in all women, and can also be picked up anywhere so anyone (men and children) can get TSS too, regardless if someone uses tampons or not. TSS is caused by the abundance of certain bacteria already in our system, and tampons do not come from the store with TSS causing bacteria. Tampons and other insertables simply provide a base for this bacteria already in our system, to grow on. We also have a greater chance of getting TSS if we are sick or have an infection already, in which case holding off on all vaginal insertables would lower our risk of a systematic infection. The best prevention for TSS or systematic infection is to create a healthy immune system. Please consult a doctor about your particular body and TSS.

      You're exactly right. It's important to note that not just tampons cause TSS - it's associated with use of all period care products, including pads, cups and period pants. The risk of TSS can be reduced by manufacturing tampons to medical device standards like GMP and ISO13485. This means that tampons are produced in clean rooms, sanitised in their final packaging, and regularly batch tested. Following more stringent quality standards in tampon manufacturing means that tampons are less likely to introduce TSS causing pathogens into the vagina.

    As shocking and horrific as Lauren’s story is, I am equally as shocked and dismayed that so many women have never heard of this condition. The comment section of this video alone reveals that there are women of all ages, some in their 40’5 and 50’s, who have worn tampons for years without ever knowing about the risk they were putting their bodies and their health in for at least a week every single month. There are a number of reasons for this. Lack of education during so called “sex ed” in school, mothers who are uncomfortable discussing things of this nature with their daughters and family physicians/gynecologists who are failing their patients miserably by not providing them with this information early on when a young lady first begins to experience her monthly period & gets her first pap smear. When I first began to have my period my mother refused to buy anything for my sister and I other than bulky pads, which we despised of course, as all young ladies do. If we were having our period during summer vacations to the beach we were not given the option of wearing a tampon so that we could enjoy water sports, etc. We didn't even know what tampons were or how they worked. We just had to sit miserably on the sidelines while everyone else enjoyed themselves. We were introduced to tampons while at summer camp one year as teenagers, by other teenage girls. It felt like we were free at last and our periods would never again hold us hostage and keep us from enjoying life. Of course those teenage girls never mentioned TSS. I first learned about TSS when I bought my first box of tampons. Every box of tampons has the big warning on the side but it’s the huge insert inside the box that serves as the only education most young girls get on the subject, although it is quite detailed.
    I remember that it stressed, more than once, that any female should immediately see their doctor if they are having their monthly period, wearing tampons and suddenly become ill with flu-like symptoms. The instructions given are to remove the tampon you are wearing immediately, seek immediate medical attention and immediately notify the physician in charge of your care that you are a tampon user currently menstruating and are concerned that the symptoms you are having may be associated with TSS (as it is considered quite rare) and you would like to be tested to be sure, before being treated as if you have the flu. It is really quite frightening to read when you are so young, as it states that TSS can lead to serious health complications, up to and including death. At the same time, the frightening nature of it made sure you never forgot. Of course, rather than scaring someone half to death, the more appropriate way to handle the situation would be for a nurse or physician to discuss menstruation with their young patients and educate them on their options, informing them of the pros and cons and potential dangers of each one to assist them in making a more informed decision. For me, this was a discussion that I had with my daughter very early on before the onset of her first menstrual cycle.

    I think it is such good point that she says that she didn't leave the tampon in a long time. In the warning on tampons it gives the impression that this is the only way that you will get toxic shock. What an amazing young woman doing a great job of bringing awareness to women.

      This isn’t correct. She removed one tampon and then inserted another one immediately. There was no chance for her body to shed that bacteria, and no chance for her vaginal canal to heal from any microtears in the skin of the sidewall. That’s what does it…not the bleach or pesticides.
      It’s a bacteria growing in a hothouse climate. The way to prevent is to switch between tampons and pads occasionally. The vagina is self-cleansing in normal situations… if you continue to use one tampon upon another, your risk increases.
      I used tampons for forty plus years? without event.

    Bless you Lauren for sharing this with us.
    I recall a scary episode I had as a teenager with TSS. I was 15 years old, back in around 1979 and living in poverty in Wash., DC. Being very active in sports, I took it upon myself to use Playtex or Tampax tampons - which enabled me to feel free about performing on teams of gymnastics, cheerleading, swimming, volleyball, track, co-ed basketball, flag football etc. Also, they were a very compact, portable, discreet, and cheaper method of femine hygiene compared to pads.
    We were sooo poor that on the day that I experienced TSS, we received a sampler of OB super in the US mail. I was menstruating so I used one and after a few hours I was nauseus, feverish, and in extreme cramp pain in my pelvic and lower back area . I called my parent to pick me up from the shopping center as I wasn't able to walk back home and was screaming in pain. My dad just drove me home without discussing. I read the notifier and had hear of TSS within the past few months from reading NewsWeek - I believe. Once I got home, I removed the tampon - but remember 2 striking things: The tampon had whot looked like shiny fiberglass looking fibers in it it was not just pure paper/ cotton and it was sort of glued to my cervix/painful to remove as the top jadn't gotten moist enough to easily remove.
    I simply warned my younger sisters and stayed mindful of this hazard.
    Had I experienced this again though, I knew to contact my coach for her thought but was prepared to walk myself to the local hospital. We were so poor that we pretty much raised ourselves even though two dysfunctional adults were in the house with us.

      @yourdaye Před 9 měsíci +20

      Tampons are a very under-regulated industry. Did you know that they are not considered medical devices in Europe and the UK? This means that there is no requirement to produce them in clean rooms, sanitise them, or continuously batch test them. There's also no mandatory requirement to disclose the ingredients in tampons. We should all push for higher standards in period care.

      Even the worst pads are better than tampons or cups. The fact they are not inside of the body alone makes a big difference in terms of toxins making contact with a delicate part that easily absorbs them. Also the clogging of blood inside is bad, it’s better to just let it leave the body. It’s bad blood that can’t go back to a kidney/liver to filter

TSS scared the hell out of me at 14, and I couldn't find the logic in taking what was considered even a small risk for something potentially life threatening. Instinctively, I felt it was not natural nor sanitary Your blood is supposed to flow as freely as possible. Then, when I was in high school, I took health classes. While TSS is rare, it can be fatal. This is why we believe more people should know about it and should know how to protect themselves against it. Beyond using the right absorbency tampons and not leaving them in for more than 8 hours, it helps to have tampons produced in a clean environment, sanitised in their final packaging and batch tested to confirm they are free from microbial contamination. This is what we do at Daye.

      @@yourdaye , Citations needed re: menstrual cups being worse for TSS risk than tampons. TSS is caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes getting into the bloodstream and producing toxins. A quick Google search indicates that as of 2019, there are five known cases of menstrual cups being associated with TSS. While still a risk, it’s much lower than the risks associated with tampon use. Reusable period underwear and reusable pads are other options for girls and women who'd rather not use menstrual cups or discs. I use all three- underwear, pads and cups!
