    12:00 your NES did not reset. There is a loop back issue in the assembly code that after a certain point after the demos, Left 2 does not appear. Pressed start it took you back to title screen. This seems to be the game begins with PC while still in demo mode, which since no demos in the Japanese version, this issue only affects the American release you played here. This also affects the original Castlevania (Konami), but different scenario: No music, but are sound effects.

      So there is a known bug where if you start the game, and you don't see "LEFT 2" the game will restart at some point later randomly? I'd like to know more about this. Is there a website that documents it in detail?
      My NES does in fact have a problem with resetting, it affected more than this game, but the possibility that there is also a bug in this game that looks just like a reset would help me diagnose it a little better.
      In Part 4 of this playthrough you'll see another such restart but the game did begin with "LEFT 2"...

      Okay, with your description I was able to find a 100% way to duplicate that problem. By starting after the first demo sequence (that shows the tank in the first room of them game) it will omit LEFT 2 every time, and go back to the title on first pause. Well that's neat. Maybe my NES is better off than I thought... though there was still a different reset in part 4 of this playthrough which is not explained by this... could still be some other bug, but hard to say. I'll have to do more testing.
