Why Small Smartphones NOT Popular Anymore

  • My first large smartphone was a samsung galaxy note 2, which at the time was one of the biggest flashship phones around. Then over time, I continued getting the biggest flagship phones possible. But for the iphone 13 series, I challenged myself to use the iPhone 13 mini. I thought switching to such a small phone would be difficult, but honestly. I love the form factor and wish there were more powerful but small phones like this. But after 2 months went by I started to realize how limiting these phones can be and really started to see why these types of phones aren’t really popular.
Amazon Affiliate Links to Gear I use:
    Sony A7S III: amzn.to/3jD0fxC
Vanguard Alta Pro 263AB Tripod: amzn.to/2O7V8Yn
    13in Macbook Pro non-touchbar: amzn.to/2F4uz27
    Philips Hue Light Strip: amzn.to/2VZq2EV
    Godox SL-60W: amzn.to/37LsdT0
    Rode VideoMic NTG: amzn.to/2RKHVrL
What I love about smaller phones is how light and portable they are compared to everything else. It feels almost like nothing in the palm of your hand. I can type, swipe, and reach most of the screen with just one hand. It has similar performance to the other phones in the iphone 13 lineup, battery life usually lasts me a day and it’s also the cheapest of the latest generation iPhones.
So obviously the iphone 13 mini has a lot going for it. So, then why? Why do the iphone mini series sell worse than the regular sized iphone despite being $100 cheaper? To sum it up, the thing holding the mini back is exactly what makes me and other people love it so much, it’s size. The size is the one limiting factor about the phone that affects the iphone 13 mini and pretty much any small phone in a huge way.
The iphone 13 mini does have good enough battery life to get you through the day, when you first get this phone, you’ll probably only be charging it at night, or maybe once throughout a busy day. But most people hold onto their phones for about 2-3 years, and after that long, a lot of things can happen that will decrease the battery life of your phone. As batteries are used and age, they degrade, lowering how much charge your phone’s battery can hold. For older iphones I owned, I think I averaged around 10% battery degradation a year. And even if the battery life is good enough for a day, it won’t be good enough for days when you really have to use it.
Luckily we have a bigger version of the iphone 13 mini for comparison. The Iphone 13. The iphone 13 mini has a smaller battery compared to it’s older brother the iphone 13. That’s 34% more battery capacity than the iphone 13 mini, while some of that is used by the bigger screen, the rest of the extra battery let’s you use the phone longer compared to the 13 mini. So if you were trying to keep your phone for longer without replacing it or replacing the battery, I can see why people would lean to the bigger phone.
Then there’s screen size. The iphone 13 mini has a screen size of 5.4inches. With a screen that small, it makes it harder to use the phone for things other than as a phone. Playing games, reading, watching videos, scrolling through social media, are all a little harder to do on the mini, and a little harder to see too. With the bigger phones, you can see more details, the keyboard is larger and easier to type on, and watching videos and playing games are more immersive. It’s also a cost saver too. A big phone really is a great middle ground between small phones and the big screened tablets.
And finally small phones lack the features. To see what I mean, we can look at the 2 bigger brothers to the iphone 13 mini. The iphone 13 and iphone 13 pro. Take one look at these two phones and you’ll see that they’re roughly the same size, and shape with the only obvious physical difference between them is that, the iphone 13 pro has a 3rd camera lens. And the iphone 13 pro had to make a compromise to do that. So, if the iphone 13 mini were to have a 3rd camera, or really any additional hardware features, I think the battery size would suffer.
So, those are all the reasons that make small phones less appealing to most people. I mean, the small size prevents the phone from having great battery life, prevents it from being on trend with a giant screen, and prevents the phone from having a ton of extra features. But hey, form factor will always be important right? There will always be a group of people who will want a small phone. But I think the definition of a “small” phone is kind of changing. Hopefully small phones make a comeback, because honestly, I can’t really think of many new premium ones other than the iPhone 12 and 13 mini and the Google Pixel 5. Small phones are really cool, and they’re so portable, but to most the trade off of a smaller phone doesn’t outweigh many of the benefits of having a larger. And while I was all for switching permanently to a small phone, after doing so for awhile, I don’t think I could go back. Even if I love the form factor so much.

The main reason why I use a small phone is because I don't want to have the phone be a part of my life that much. I don't use phone for gaming, watching videos or reading. I have dedicated devices that do all of those things better (switch, iPad, eReader).
The only thing I want a phone for is being connected - messaging, notifications, and maybe looking up public transit. I try to avoid social networks, and I feel like for me the only reason for a bigger phone would be spending more time on those.

      it's exactly that.
there is no valid offering on the market for small phones and this is not because people don't buy them, it's because companies realised they can make money from content consumption app sales etc
Modern smartphones are media consumption devices meant to keep you glued to the screen.

Manufacturers just wanted to stay in the game and all copy from each other. Samsung made edged screens with s6 edge, yet nowadays flat screens are more popular for practical reasons. Edge looks good, but feels bad in hands + makes accidental touches. 6.7 inch phones seems nice on paper, stronger cpu each year, SD 855, 865, 888 etc... It's bull. All of it. 99% of people need a good battery, screen (oled) and regular cpu for messenger and CZcams and calls...
My galaxy s10e, IMO, is one of the greatest phones ever made. With 5.8 inches, I could use even smaller like iPhone 12/13 mini at 5.4 inch, but has oled + SD card, 3.5mm jack, stereo speakers, light weight, ip68,... It's a pocket phone all roudner! If it happens every week because you travel often the the mini is not the phone for you...but if you rarely travel like me it's not a big deal. Back in July 2020 I decided to switch from Android to Apple, but I didn’t want to invest in a very expensive phone because I didn’t know if I would like iOS. I had a OnePlus 6T and ended up getting an iPhone SE (version 2). At first it was difficult to get used to the smaller size of the screen, but it eventually stopped being a problem (other than for gaming). However there were two things that never stopped being a problem: battery life and mobile gaming. I was really into Hearthstone back then and would play several times a day, but not with the SE. I had to play on PC or my older Android phone. Eventually, once I got used to iOS, I got the 12 Pro and sold the other two.

I love my 13 mini a lot. It's my favorite iPhone ever and I plan to keep it for as long as possible. However, after using it for over 5 months now, even I acknowledge that the 13 mini is not for everyone; and this video pretty much nailed the reasons why. Although, there are a few other reasons why the 13 mini specifically didn't sell as well as it should have that aren't mentioned. For one, the "mini" label on the 13 mini sort of implied to consumers that the phone is inherently lesser or inferior to the other iPhones. While that is technically true in terms of specs, the mini label downplays the real benefits of having a small phone. In my opinion, the 13 mini would probably sell better if it was labeled as iPhone 13, and the 6.1" iPhone was labeled iPhone 13 Max. Secondly, there's like a social stigma against small phones nowadays. A lot of people nowadays would see a small phone as like a cheap toy. This happened to me recently actually. Someone saw the 13 mini I was holding and asked why I was using a phone for kids and I'm pretty sure they asked that because it was blue and it was small. Needless to say, that person was an a**hole and I ignored him. But still, that's a sentiment that a lot of people shared.
So if I were to sum up the reasons why small phones don't sell well nowadays and why the 13 mini didn't sell as well as Apple wanted, it's simply because of the fact that society has moved on to prefer bigger phones. While there is a minority of consumers who still prefer small phones overall because of the portability, one handed use, and the fact that you don't get as distracted compared to a bigger phone, we are still just a minority. It's a sad reality for me and others who loves small tech.

    • @florinmoldovanu
      @florinmoldovanu Před 2 lety +2

it's not that they are "not popular", it's that there is no valid offering on the market.
People buy larger phones 1 because they've become addicted to content consumption, 2 companies realised they can make more money by selling content / apps and make the devices indispensable for the user.
Battery is not a limiting factor in a small form factor if you care make them only slightly thicker. But of course if you make the battery last longer then no planned obsolescence and Apple loves money.
the battery in a phone is about 4mm thick. Making the phone only 1 mm thicker would add at least 30% more battery life taking into consideration that space would be saved with the added thickness and rearrangement of components.
Magic works by showing to the audience something while something else is hidden. How many times have you heard Apple touting the sleek slim design of their phones and how sexy they look. I was wondering at one point whether are they going to make them as thin as paper. They make them thin so that you are forced to either upgrade or change the battery which will make them "not waterproof". If iPhone SE 2016 (that I'm still using) can get me through the day, I'm sure they could have made a version of the Mini without the stupid notch nobody has been asking for and the extra camera and giant square on the back. Instead they've opted to refresh the SE line in 2020 with the curved screen super-slim iPhone 6 design. They've now refreshed the 2020 SE with new chip and camera with a tiny bump in battery size. Just enough to keep you buying their crap. Oh and by the way, careful not to drop that curved glass face down on concrete, because those curved edges only need one drop to ruin your glossy screen. I had the iPhone 6s and had to change the screen twice in a year. Went back to SE 2016 and never looked back.
The main reason why small phones aren't "popular" anymore is because there isn't really much on offer when it comes to small size phones. It's absurd to say they are not popular when all you have on offer is a £700 iPhone mini that's slapped with a stupid notch (that nobody asked for) on a small screen and has a poor battery life.
The second reason why small phones are not popular is because small phones don't stimulate media consumption. A phone used to be a tool for getting things done efficiently. Companies have figured out they can make money from content / apps / peripherals etc. So a phone nowadays is a way for technology companies to reach deeper into your pockets for revenue from content consumptions rather than the device itself. Mindless consumerism and engineered addiction to these devices made sure you think having a big slam of glass around you all the time is "indispensable. This is why Apple didn't make a iPhone mini on the cheap in iPhone SE 2016 body. Because people who would have bought that would have used it as a tool. The iPhone mini on the other hand was designed with upgraded internals and AR cameras to stimulate consumption of the new integrative technology as well as being a status symbol.

I think there is still a decent demand for a small phone. A good example of this is the iPhone SE. The reason why the iPhone SE is successful is because of its $399 starting price. The issue with the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini is that Apple overpriced these phones. $729 for a small phone is way too much for the average consumer hence why most people will spend the extra $100 and go for the larger model. The iPhone mini should have been either $549 or $599. If we are being honest, the iPhone mini would sell like crazy if it was the same price of the iPhone SE. If we are talking about Samsung, The Galaxy Z Flip3 is selling pretty well by foldable phone standards. Again, this is because the Z Flip3 is $800 cheaper than the Z Fold3. The takeaway from this is that small phones can sell well if the price is reasonable.

The only things that bother me with it is the battery life (I might replace it, but it's tough to find a good replacement for it) and since few last updates Google maps work super slowly for some reason (the other apps work perfectly fine).

"But it's heading in the direction I see small phones going, the flip"
Which is the complete opposite direction it needs to go. I feel like this shouldn't have to be said, but here goes.
People want small phones for four reasons.
    1. effortless one handed use
    2. ability to reach across the entire screen without adjusting grip.
    3. Phone feels secure no matter how it's held
    4. lightweight
When the flip is open, it does none of these things better than the iPhone 13 mini, and all other small phones.
    5:38
"finally small phones lack the features"
    Yes and no.
It's a trade off. See the 4 reasons I mentioned above are the exclusive features of small phones.
    - Effortless one handed use
    - lightweight
    - can reach across the entire screen
    - feels very secure no matter how you hold the phone.

Honestly, I don't know why small phones are not popular anymore... I've just bought an iphone 12 and I can't get used to the terrible proportions and feel of it. Also it's too light for its size which removes the premium feeling unfortunately. The 13 mini however looks and feels amazing !

I'll always love smaller compact phones. My pixel 3 was great near launch and the camera is still pretty good for 2022 standards, but man the batterylife is so bad. Always wondered how these newer iphone Mini's are but the price is a bit out of my budget.
edit:I've always prefered smaller compact phones in my pocket because I mainly use an iPad/Samsung Tablet for mostly everything. A Plus/Pro Max sized smartphone makes sense for those of you who don't own any tablet.

I dunno. What sells for manufacturers is what decides things I guess. I know that personally I don't need premium in my smartphone. I would be just fine sacrificing battery life for a smaller form factor.
I am typing this on my new (to me) pixel 5 and it bothers me quite often when I need both hands to operate this thing. I always stay a few years behind the curve and am happy buying a used phone. The only reason I have a Pixel 5 is because Visible wireless (extremely cheap, but runs on Verizon's network) supports a very limited number of phones, and my old phone finally died after having been dropped for the umpteenth time. I had my eye on the Pixel 6 but it only comes in today's "standard" size.
I guess I am ranting and raving, but there is a large population of users out there (me included) who only use their phones for a few things, and are not into social media. For me, my used pixel 5 still lasts into a third day most of the time, and I am not trying to extend battery life in any way. I certainly don't charge it every night but would be happy to do so.
I resent that a 6" screen is what passes for a "small phone" these days. I miss the days of the 4 - 5 inch screens. I even had a Palm one a few years back that had abysmal battery life by all accounts, but I would gladly run one of those again if Visible supported it.
Maybe it's time to switch providers to something that will let me run some off brand phone that comes in a smaller size.

If you need more than the 5 hours of screen on time the 13 mini provides in a day then you have other issues. And I hate the Swiss Army knife argument. No phone is going to be as comfortable as an iPad for media consumption or as useful as a laptop. If you own all 3 you can see how the benefits of a more compact phone far outweigh larger devices trying to do it all. Remember just a few short years ago the 13 mini’s screen would be considered huge

I very much agree that having a separate smartphone, tablet and laptop much better than having just a huge smartphone to do the task of all three. But it's also more expensive compared to jut having one big smartphone that can do the job of all three devices in a decent way. The experience is not as great, but it is less expensive overall. A big smartphone is an example of a "Jack of all trades, master of none, is better than a master of one."

Need something that will play Spotify, send text messages, and run google services that's basically it. Big phones need bigger batteries cause they up the screen size and then also boost the resolution for people feel like they are getting a "premium product" when all you really get out of it is the same battery life and a half second novelty of "its a 4k screen" but many unlimited plans won't even let you stream over 1080p bandwidth on cellular anyway so it was pointless. Its complete bullshit, and as an example, Xiaomi used to have the Redmi 4 (5 inch screen) and Redmi note 4 (5.5 inch screen) both with the same 4000mah battery. There's no headphone Jacks these days either, so companies can easily put bigger batteries in smaller phones.
But no, not a single midrange small phone on sale today has a battery life even close to 3500mah, much less 4000mah ( except flagship Zenfone 9.. glad that exists with 4300mah, with a headphone jack)

For me even the iphone mini is too big. I prefer 4 inch screen on phone. 🙂

well i dont think that there are really downsides to small phones. the real downside comes when someone like apple try to jam high end processors in the smal formfactor or a 4k display, what is just not neccessary.
most of all it is marketing and telling the people they need stuff, that they actually never need.
give me a damn budget small phone. what is the issue? low resolution and a smaller battery bringt still better battery life. a processor, that plays triple A games? i dont give a shit. i need a phone for calling, messaging and email and thats it. it is a communication device, not a multimediacenter. i even would buy a phone with no camera at all. and they tech gians put in three or four. all i can do is laughing my ass off.

I think that nobody really cares that much about having a little bit thicker phone. Only the brands did really cared and raced about it. And in my opinnion it doesn't have to be really to small like 5'4. 6'1 would be really enough for me but even that size is really so rare. I believe that there is too many people like me who doesn't really need a flagship phone in terms of their needings. I would love to see some cheaper and small phones but even Samsung doesn't produce a small phone which is not a flagship. If Samsung A series or something like that would have it probably thath would be my choice.

Small phones are still super popular. They're just not being made. The ones that are being made are super stripped down phones that are seemingly meant for people who don't know how to use most of the features on higher end phones, so no care went into them. I go out of my way to buy the smallest "feature filled" phones that I can get, but they're still very big phones. Big phones are an incredibly stupid trend that are marketed towards incredibly stupid people. If they continue the trend of getting bigger every year, it won't be long before they're no longer portable.
