How does an F1 wind tunnel actually work? It's one of the most important aspects in the development of new cars: the wind tunnel. Yet you don't often hear or see one up close. Confidentiality and secrecy are incredibly important to prevent competitors from becoming any wiser. RacingNews365 recently visited the wind tunnel of Toyota Gazoo Racing in Cologne Germany and got an exclusive look behind the scenes.
There we spoke with wind tunnel manager Antonio Pavesi, among other things about their new client Andretti F1, who largely filled the gap left by McLaren when they started using their own wind tunnel.
Part of the Toyota campus in Cologne are the famous wind tunnels. They have two, dating back to the time when the Toyota Formula 1 program was run from Cologne. One tunnel allows models up to fifty percent size, the other can even accommodate full size cars. How does the technology work? What about safety? What does the technology behind the wind tunnel and the test section look like? And could you also test for WEC, MotoGP, or even airplanes here?
