Releasing a game set in the bronze age without Babylonia and Assyria was such a facepalm moment. It's like making medieval:total war and not including the HRE.
5:44 Can't agree more with this statement, wait and see before we get burned again. The overall message though is one of hope, maybe this time they won't bork it up?

@@heavyartillery-qm5hudude don't even get me started on Starfield...no FOV slider, no DLSS support, no mini map, horrendous map, horrendous UI, fundamentally terrible world design (fast travel REQUIRED, unlike other BGS games). I could go on and on about Starfield and what a letdown it was. Let's just say I'm worried for Elder Scrolls 6 when it comes out in 2077.

6:08 I don't have Pharaoh so no comment but Penthesilea in Troy was an awesome horde faction, genuinely one of my most fun total war campaigns. I think the biggest factor that made it fun was the 5-resource system in Troy which gave you a reason to sack particular settlements to get the resource you needed most.

I genuinely think Pharaoh is underrated as hell because of CA's mishandling of everything. Gameplay is fun, campaign is the best since 3k, resources and trading is better than it's ever been (aside from 3k), the combat is wayy different than Troy if you actually delve into it. Only the light units feel floaty and weightless. The heavy units are clunky and immovable. Medium units are a mix of both. Not only are formations back, you can actually order your units to push or do a fighting retreat. A fighting retreat!!!! Something we wanted for so long and I hope they implement it in future historical TW games. Terrain and weather play a big role. There's so much to like about it, but CA's mismanagement made sure it'll get caught in the crossfire.
It saddens me to see so many people even here in this comment section write it off or bash it without having played it at all. The Suppiluliuma campaign is the closest thing to a WRE/ERE Attila campaign yet. I felt like I was fighting tooth and nail to save my broken empire and keep the world from collapse. Failed multiple campaigns until I finally finished one with Ultimate Victory recently. Most fun I've had in TW since a looooong time. Can't wait for the expanded map, it's everything I wanted from a bronze age TW. The CA Sofia devs are open and transparent, often engaging with people in the official discord. And they're the ones who did the last few patches and DLCs for Rome II, finalising its comeback. So I trust them fully to turn the ship around if CA allow them to.
Happy to see you back dude, I hope to see more vids soon :P

Thanks for sharing and for the warm welcome! CA Sophia have yet to put out something that's truly bad. Their work on Rome 2 was so much better than the work the main studio was doing before. They're the ones who really fixed the game (though it still has some major AI issues). Troy launched on Epic, was a Saga, was overpriced and had an identity crisis, Mythos was good and fixed the identity crisis, but it was way overpriced and came too late. Pharaoh was overpriced and once again had an identity crisis which they are now fixing. Two games in a row that were set up to fail right out of the gate.
I hope the update is good enough that we all end up wondering what could have been had it launched like that. Sadly, even if it's amazing, I doubt Pharaoh will ever reach healthy concurrent players long term. Too much working against it from the mishandled launch. It's insane to me how terrible CA's decision making has been. It's like they're actively trying to go out of business.
I hope I'm wrong of course, but unlike Rome 2's comeback, Pharaoh doesn't have a super popular setting that people are craving to bring people back. I think it's DOA which is why I'm so shocked it's even getting this big update (3K was killed for far less than Pharaoh's failures).
That said, I agree 100% with you that Pharaoh has Attila vibes and I really love the "end of the world" setting that the Bronze Age Collapse has!

I share your disillusionment with CA. It's not even like this is the first time they've fallen off and dropped the ball hard. They did the same thing in 2009 with Empire's buggy release that they never fully fixed before moving on to Napoleon. Then they did it again 2013 with Rome 2's mishandled mess of a launch, and then they had to do a year-long apology tour to make that game semi-acceptable before they abandoned it for Attila (which they then also abandoned after a year lmao).

    • @ivanlarav

      @@happycompy
It depends on your definition of 'historically correct.' There are some details that are historically absurd, but I understand because it's a video game. For example, the Egyptian units wear too much armor (armor was extremely rare in Egyptian armies due to its cost and the heat of the deserts), and the size of the walls is exaggerated.
There are also some details that bother me a little. The absence of Sethnakht as a playable character is the biggest issue for me (he was the one who won the war). I also find it strange that Seti doesn't start the game with a significant advantage in legitimacy. If Merenptah dies without a civil war, he should automatically be named Pharaoh. Oh, and while it's cool to try to resurrect the cult of Akhenaten, that should come with a significant penalty to diplomacy, because other Egyptian nobles wouldn't be happy with someone destroying temples in the name of a forbidden cult.
But overall, I find that TWP is one of the best representations of Egyptian civilization in video games. CA Sophia had already impressed me with their attention to detail in TW Troy, and Pharaoh is no different. It breaks my heart that Troy and Pharaoh were financial failures, because for me, they are the greatest works of passion we've seen in the franchise since Shogun 2.
But my judgment is not impartial. I've been dreaming of a Total War game about the Trojan War and Egyptian civilization since I first played Rome TW on the computer in my high school library.

thank you for your professional insight. It's infectious and inspiring to talk to someone so knowledgeable and passionate about this game's setting. When you say Sethnakht "won the war," are you referring to the Egyptian civil war that the game depicts? Most of my knowledge about the era revolves around the drama of the collapse and its potential causes. I'm unfamiliar with most of the internal political struggles of the civilizations themselves.

You just gotta be smarter everyone. Listen, I've been playing TW since my 2D samurai were hacking each other into hundreds of pixelated corpses. I bought Rome 2 while deployed to Iraq in 2004 and played it on my little laptop whenever I could and LOVED it. I purchased and enjoyed every TW game ... up to Troy ... because you could totally tell CA were losing their touch. I mean come on, super hero Greeks in some kind of weird historical/Warhammer fusion? Please. Then they market us Pharaoh as a super expensive bronze age historical with just THREE factions from that time, again with super hero immortal leaders, AND want $60? NOPE! Aahhhh but then someone over at CA has finally woken up and now they're POTENTIALLY releasing an epic bronze age historical historical? Maybe. AND they just offered the game on discount for like $29? So I bought it of course. Never played Troy. Never played Pharaoh. Won't play Pharaoh until released WITH update and patched AT LEAST once. So then. my simple friends, for $25 I'll POTENTIALLY enjoy a proper CA Bronze Age Historical Masterpiece and hope that CA continues to slowly pull their head out of their asses. You just gotta be smarter folks ... :)

My major issue with Troy and Pharaoh are the awful battles. They're just such a major downgrade from Rome 2 and Attila in almost every way (except for the beautiful map-design). The Paradox-games have surpassed the strategic depth of the TW-campaigns a long time ago, so imo the outstanding feature of TW-games are their real time battles. As long as they become worse with every release or at least don't increase the quality of the Troy-battles, I won't pay for a new TW-game.
Another pain are the comic-esque graphics: they just don't really fit a historical title - but that's admittedly a bit nitpicky.
I'm still curious, what this DLC will bring to the table and hope to be pleasantly surprised.

    • @happycompy
      @happycompy  Před měsícem +1

I get where you're coming from. I do think that Pharaoh's battles are much better than Troy's, especially with regards to combat animations, unit collision and the reintroduction of formations. That said, I think that the implementation of said formations is worse than what we had in Rome 2. I hate that we can't issue attack or movement commands while units are in shield wall without it breaking the formation, for example. It feels awkward and clunky to use. Attila and 3K have this issue too.
