Total War: Pharaoh May Still Become A Decent Bronze Age Game

  • Later this year CA will be releasing another free update for Pharaoh, but unlike the Sea Peoples DLC which really did just feel like a last ditch effort to get some community good will, this next chapter for the game may shape up to be something beyond what anyone expected for the game with a huge campaign map expansion, lot's of new cultures & playable factions and more!
Today I go through the latest Dev blog detailing this upcoming free piece of content with specific info on how big this campaign expansion is, what we can expect in terms of the cultures and kingdoms and some snippets of info on additional as well as reworked features on the campaign. There's still lot's to find out and more time to see if the gameplay is actually improved at it's core and I still have plenty of concerns, but at least this seems like a step in the right direction to finally get a full scale Bronze Age game.
I really hope you enjoyed this video and found it informative. Drop a comment with any thoughts or questions & subscribe for more Total War content, gameplay and news just like this!

With such low player numbers, the free Sea Peoples DLC not making much of a dent in that either, I fully expected the game to be abandoned. And yet here we are, CA are planning a major campaign expansion with many cultures that should have been here from the start with lots of mechanic reworks, new cultures, factions and more. Still need to wait to see gameplay and whether core gameplay has been improved, but this is still quite a surprising positive step forward for the game. Let me know what you think below!

I firmly believe most of CA's problems have been in management and especially in their refusal to spend money developing a new engine. It's clear nobody currently at CA understands how this engine, which was created over 15 years ago, works and it seems like half the time and budget of every game is spent trying to duct tape it into an acceptable state. Combined with other bad management decisions and I think it's less that the studio is rotten to the core, unlike some other companies, and more that the devs have been hampered by truly awful management for a decade+. We know there was some degree of management shakeup but it remains to be seen if it was enough.

Dust or not - the game is getting bigger now and for free, and this is result of a wide fans outrage, which was strong and justified (apes together strong!).
But thing is - Pharaoh is a good historical TW game, mechanically and visually ( I bought it on release and kept playing, skipping SoC WH3 until CA fixed it too). There are things they still should change, sure (like to move from character-focused factions to Rome-like internal politics). But game itself is good.

Doesn't really matter, if they're doing it they're doing it. No company is your friend, they exist to make money. CA made a really good apology and so far have been acting on the plans they laid out to make things right with consumers. Make no mistake: They aren't doing this because they feel really bad and want to be our friends again, they're doing it because not doing it hurts their bottom line and puts their jobs at risk. But they are doing it. This is the relationship you have with corporations, it's 100% transactional and it's weird to sit around and be concerned about whether they "really mean it".

This announcement was shocking in a good way. Like you said, this is exactly the scope that the game SHOULD have had on launch. Really nice to see CA try to make this game realize its potential like they did with Rome 2 after that unmitigated disaster of a launch.
We will see what they ultimately deliver.

i so hope CA gets back to the days of the late 00s, every title i was excited to buy and even if there were issues i didnt feel ripped off or that they werent listening to their customer base . They were the Rockstar of RTS gaming- synomous with quality I am actually sad that they lost their way. I hope they can return to what they once were

My main concern is a scale. Because Troy was so much more detailed and seems like Greece this time will be not so much bigger than in Rome 2 or same games... Eastern part is also supposed to be not that big also, especially if Elam area will not be included.

In total agreement with you - whilst it is great seeing them now finally bring these mechanics into the game, but it shouldn't be coming in as DLC it should have been base game content - these are core mechanics in their other games - I really feel that whilst they are now backpeddling and fixing things (that's great) the whole lead up to getting to this point from their end kind of took the excitement out of it for me, especially based from their initial reaction to the customers dissatisfaction and reviews, how long they went on a campaign of attacking the player base for simply disliking their product and for calling it out for what it was.

One good thing of CA is they alway update game with new contents. I remember when Rome 2 is released it gain many of criticisms. But now it's rare to see any negative cricism about Rome 2, thank to it's dlc. So i hope the same thing will also apply to the Total War Pharaoh.

That's good, Creative Assembly (by their standards) heavily discounted TW:Pharaoh 's msrp down to around $35usd, which worried me too it would be abandoned. After so many fantasy centred Warhammer releases, and two big fantasy-history titles in Three Kingdoms and and Troy... Wanted a nice sober old fashioned historic Total War game, Egypt was great, but everything else was barely baked. Hope this big expansion DLC gives us what we want.

It’s almost comical how badly CA screwed themselves by not just releasing the game like this in the first place. If they would have had all this on release the original price would’ve felt much fairer and the game would’ve definitely sold better. But instead they wanted to break it up into dlc, so Pharaoh was dead on arrival and now they’re releasing it all as a free update anyway.

Looks promising provided CA delivers on their promise to keep it as a free update AND they don't jack the price of the base game (for customers who haven't bought yet) to skim more money for content that should have been present when the base game launched last year! Like many, I will hold off purchasing until after the update and hear what you, "Terminator", have to say on the issue and the game price at that time. Yes, a sale would be nice! :)

I bought Pharaoh when it came out and then refunded it pretty quickly. There just wasn't enough there to justify the purchase. With the sea people factions and now with this expanded map confirmed with the Mycenaean and Sumerian factions I bought it again. They would have avoided a lot of headache if they just released the full game map from the start and then filled in different areas with DLC factions.

  • @mrsswindon
    @mrsswindon Před 29 dny

I think the biggest issue holding me back from playing the shit out of total war like i used to, are seige and battle maps, as well as AI. Nothing to do with the setting Warhammer total war scratches a certain itch with stacking bonuses but i would prefer just good old fashioned total war.
Think CA need to go back to the absolute basics and build on it from there because the series has basically been stagnant since Rome 2. Also i know people all want their fav fantasy universes getting their own total war adaption but i legit think game of thrones total war is a match made in heaven. Westeros would all be very similar as the predominant content, like shogun 2. take the intruge system from 3k and spice it up. White walker end game invasion as vampire faction. so any units you lose against them, they get as wights. Dragons obvs. A nice mix between historical and fantasy.
Glad they are redoing pharaoh because i was sad when i saw their "bronze age" game wasnt actually a proper bronze age game. i expected them to announce they were doing a similar thing to wh2/3 and combining them into a bigger bronze age game but i will definitely buy it and give it a try when the update comes out. I dont care if they reuse assets from troy.
