Something I noticed when watching Luffy find and eat the devil fruit is how prominently they featured the Sun. To a casual watcher it looks like the generic "rays of destiny" used across media, but I can't help but notice the Sun shining directly on the fruit, then spreading to cover our main character the more of the fruit he eats. It all culminates in Shank's realization that Luffy ate the fruit as the Sun seems to cover the entire horizon, the light almost seeming to come from Luffy. VERY good cinematography.

Aside from being goofy and sometimes cringe because it's an adaptation of one piece, it's actually incredibly well made, every aspect of the series is perfect.
That blonde haired kid in the execution scene is none other than a YOUNG SMOKER! he was in fact there
But young Smoker has white hair, I think it might've been Doffy because no way it's Smoker when they *spoilers* teased him at the very end

Oda actually had them reshoot certain scenes and they were more than happy to do so for him and it shows

I love how they show the map of east blue in the credits each episode and slowly fill it in as episodes go on. That is an incredible touch and adds so much to the world building and gives context of scale and distance for new viewers

One thing I really liked about this Live Action was seeing Nami fighting because even though in the Anime and Manga she looks scared to me it was obvious that she knew how to fight, but in many scenes Oda just didn't show it.
It's pretty much common sense to manga readers that she obviously is a good fighter for east blue. She is only shown as weak since she can't keep up with the grand line.
Yeah in Shonen magazines authors are not allowed to show females do too much. The publishers think that the target audience want to see women being protected. Those shackles are taken off for this live action.

I watched all 8 episodes when it first released. I love it. My favourite touch is when they acknowledge the wanted posters and use their weapons to get rid of them on screen. Have not seen a better introduction in my life.

I marathoned the entire show in one day. I was optimistic, but also cautious. I was just hoping it'd be good, nothing more, just good. But this exceeded my expectations. It was amazing. I had such a great time watching this and I'm already hungry for season 2.

I am completely caught up and watched all of season 1 and I can say i need season 2 cuz i love how the live action is doing so far it is so refreshing but doesn't take away the magic of one piece the cast are doing so well bringing to live the world we all love to life ❤️

Very good adaptation. All the changes were made well in good taste, great pacing for 8 hour long episodes, the cast is fantastic, and the set design is out of this world! Of course nothing is ever perfect but this really was something special and I can’t wait for more. My only real complaint is that I hope in future seasons we get a higher episode count!

Not just the manga. In the anime, Zoro says he knows who Baroque Works is because they tried recruiting him when he was a Bounty Hunter. This is as canon as so many other scenes Oda didn't draw but wanted to touch upon which got included in the anime.

I love that they highlighted that the devil fruit is really calling to Luffy and how the Sun is prominent both when Luffy ate the devil fruit and when his ability was revealed. Those were nice touches that only Anime fans will understand.

In the 8 episodes of the Live Action they cover what the anime took 44 episodes to do.
Yes OPLA episodes are 1 hour and Anime episodes are 30 minutes but even so the LA is the equivalent time of only 16 anime episodes.

they are 20 minutes at best and with one piece if you cut the intro, outro and recaps you got maybe ~15 mins an episode.
Thatd be 4 episodes = 1 LA episode, making the 8 episodes are ~32 anime episodes. So yeah they did condence it a bit but not by as crazy of an amount as you were saying

I never watched the anime or read the manga, but I KNEW Luffy and Helmeppo were perfect. Also, while I knew I'd love Zoro, I think I'm IN love with Zoro.

So a cool thing is that all of the actors did most of their own stunts. Mackenyu and Taz Skylar, for me, are the most impressive. I know Mackenyu already had an affinity for swords since he did the Rurouni Kenshin live action adaptation, but damn, he really did his thing in this
The only thing that disappointed me is the way they handle the Morgan story. In the Manga by defeating him they literally libarated the whole village and the marines themselves thanked them. Another great scene is luffy treating koby badly as a farewell to show that he was not with him so he can join the marines. It's the little touching stories that make the early one piece interesting before we start going on adventures and world building.

Due to luffy not treating koby badly, garp was able to think of koby as a suspect this leading to taking him under his wing.. An original idea that works great
Including that story arc would have required another episode, which would have increased the budget by alot. This was probably a budget work around and honestly, I'm not mad at it.
Yeah that's my one complaint too. They didn't do a great job at showing Morgan as a super corrupt POS. They just make him seem egotistical and incompetent in the live action when the corruption part was the big part of his character

19:18 in the manga, Zoro was locked up because he killed Helmeppo’s pet wolf, which was about to kill Rika. The live action moved the part where Zoro eats food off the ground to here instead of after he was locked up.

I just found this channel. I love how you guys pause mid show to discuss things. I wish more reaction channels did that. That is such a unique touch. I have never seen another channel that does that. It also reminds me of when my sister and me would watch something back in the day. It would take so long to get through because we'd pause like every two minutes!

I almost cry when watching how good the ep1 of live action was. I didn't expect it was that great, I really got goosebumps and all my worries finally got away 😭❤️❤️❤️
Is the live-action manga/anime adaptation curse broken now?
I would say no because I feel that there have already been live-action manga/anime adaptations that have been great. That being said, I’m so happy to say that this adaptation far exceeded my expectations and managed to be an enjoyably charming TV series. While there are some adaptational changes that I feel mixed on, this show in general has managed to maintain the spirit of One Piece’s world and characters that makes the material so special to begin with. This team has done a fantastic job brining Eiichiro Oda’s story into a new medium and I pray and hope they are granted the opportunity to keep working on this new iteration of one of the greatest series ever made.

I will say that it's not that hard to break the curse if the directors truly care about the source material. It's not related to anime, but I believe the author of Percy Jackson is making a TV series since he absolutely hated the live-action movies. J.K. Rowling also helped produce the Harry Potter movies if I'm not mistaken. And then you have the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy by Peter Jackson.
I love seeing people who enjoyed it on the same level I did.
I will look into checking it out this weekend. Emily Rudd is the only actor I'm familiar with along with the narrator (who voiced Tai Lung in Kung Fu Panda and played Winston in John Wick and Blackbeard in Pirates of the Carribbean), so I'm curious to see how it goes.
The rest of the main cast are pretty much unknowns except for Zoros actor who was in the Rurouni Kenshi live action films and the live action Saint Seya movie that came out recently.

I love everything about One Piece. Here is my order: Manga is the best, Anime is second and Live Action is third. Seeing fancy beautiful effects is always good but in terms of story, Manga and Anime is still better because of many details. Live Action is surprisingly really good tbh.

The live action is better than midpiece anime. Fights are dragged out which makes it so consistently boring. After timeskip, everything became repetitive too. Live action is consistently entertaining and more serious, that's why it's better.
My biggest question right now is who they are going to cast for Boa Hancock, seriously who do you think is the actress that best fits the woman who's main power is seducing everyone and turning them to stones? Also, am I the only one wondering how they would adapt Boa's mannerisms towards Luffy after she falls in love with him?

I am so so happy how well they did this adaptation. It's its own thing, keeps the heart, has the PERFECT fucking cast and they are doing a great job portraying their charac ters. The fight scenes are better than most currently potrayed in cinema.. it's amazing.
It wasn't in a cover or a sbs. The little girl told Luffy and Coby the reason that Zoro was arrested was because he defended the little girl from Helmeppo's pet wolf.
As someone who hasnt watched the anime or read the manga i decided to watch this adaptation based on the positive reviews. I binged the whole season and am starting the anime at episode 45. I am so excited to get into a new anime, one that I've been intimidated by for a very long time.
It's sooo good!! I watch all eight episodes and I give it a 8.5 out of 10. I love it!!! It's amazing! Wayy better than I expected!
as a newbie who hasn't really watched the anime or read the manga (at least not to a point where it would count) I'd honestly give this show a 10/10 not even gonna lie to you. I genuinly think this shows on the same level If not even better (imo) than Stranger Things, Game of Thrones etc🙏🏼
As someone who hasn't watched the anime one piece and saw this first, i gotta say this piqued my interest. I always wanted to watch the anime but didn't have any motivation to, but now this makes me want to give the anime a chance and read the manga as well.
I was too late into the fandom to watch your guys reactions to the actual anime when it came out, so I’m happy I’ll be able to experience this!
This was good but it made me appreciate anime a lot more. The slowed down pacing of certain scenes really elevated them for me. Still enjoyed it a lot more than expected
This first episode has to be a 9/10 IMO, The pacing is fast but how else where they going to fit so many episodes into 1 hour, I also like how it's somewhat different compared to the original. May change my rank to a 10/10 if it stays good

my family enjoyed this show so much (we are 857 episodes into the anime) and after watching the whole season we wanted to see someone who actually knew the source material react to it so much that we sought out reviews. So glad you guys felt the same way we did about the first episode. I want more already!!

@@forte609 everyone has the right to their own opinion but they didn't compromise either of the characters they pulled Garp in earlier yes but they stayed true to his story and his background. They had to fit 60 episodes of the anime into 8 episodes of the show of course things had to change but all of the important beats are there. So in my opinion you are wrong.
Only one episode in, but I'm actually loving this adaptation so far. Though if there is one thing I want to complain about, its Cobi not getting to talk smack to Alvida's face, which I feel is suppossed to be where his character arc starts. That, and not getting a bit of time with the Marinea after Morgan is defeated, to show that Luffy and co got there respect for it.
The intro voice over was the same actor who played Blackbeard in Pirates of the Caribbean!!
Also I have never been SO HAPPY AND PROUD that they made One Piece so violent like YES!!

I just finished watching the whole season before I started in on reactions, good LORD they knocked it out of the park with this one! I honestly think this is going to be huge, an era-defining adaptation.

My friends have been telling me to watch One Piece for years, but I just havent had the time to commit. So, when I heard there was a decent live action, i got hyped up because finally something 'bite sized'. And I LOVED IT. But i recognize that there is so much about an adaptation that not knowing the source material can make you miss. So i WANTED to watch a reaction from true fans who aren't just superficially watching but aren't just complaining or nitpicking the whole thing. And i found that with you 3. I am learning so much about the anime and manga from you three - just little things that are making me love the show even more. It also helps to see you three get hype over things - like i can SEE what must be a big deal to the anime and manga just by watching you three get excited and that's what i was missing as a newbie. So thank you :) ill be going through the rest of the videos and probably checking out other content as i have time. Looking forward to getting to see through your eyes!

This is a better and more accurate to the source material adaptation than batman v superman and that had a bigger budget and studio backing it. This is a perfect example of when the people creating a live action adaptation actually care about the original and the fans. I binged all of it last night and was not disappointed almost a perfect 10/10 for me
As soon as I found out Oda was in charge, I had more faith in Netflix and watching all the clips of the actors, encouraging people to see the show and watch them just become friends that was Oda wanted. he wanted them to be friends with each other. Even sanji's character learning kickboxing. And how to cook like those aren't just little things. Those are like hardcore skills that require hardcore. Dedication and yes, luffy is luffy Nami Is Nami even Ooooosap!
And the best part is they had to learn how to do so much for this first season. The stunts learning about the harnesses learning You know how to fight and staff work and cooking skills and all of these things, so now you KNOW season 2 is going to be even better. these kids are gonna Kill it!!!!! ♡♡♡♡
They combined the scene where helmeppo stomped on the food and where zoro initially protected her.

Mackenyu Arata, the actor who plays Zoro, is known in Japan for his action scenes and the skill he has with martial arts and swords, the directors he has worked with have always talked about how he does all his stunts

And recognizing that three sword style is just for fun, come up with the best way for a three sword style to work in real life. It would probably involve swords being different length, and dropping one as a distraction.
Since they have shown the Sixis island, I started to hope that there will be a live action version of One Piece Novel A (aka Ace spinoff story).
That island is where Ace got his Mera-mera fruit, also the place Ace meet with Masked Deuce, his first mate.
Geez. I wanna finish the whole 8 episodes so badly in just a day. But I am not feeling well right now 😔 not really a fan of One Piece but I love the storyline and all. I've watched few episodes from the anime prior to this live action and they really did a great job in casting the actors and actresses! I love the guy who played Buggy and Koby. It's like they're really straight out from the anime. Especially Koby. The actor's skin complexion is the exact one even the facial features. ❤❤❤❤

Honestly I know how much everyone cringes from the one piece anime English dubbed. But honestly this didn’t sound bad at all. I just wish they could’ve had Luffy’s actor attempt to say gomu gomu no pistol instead gun gum. But still it’s a pretty promising first ep

The reason Kamehameha works in both languages is because no japanese person would say “kamehameha” if they wanted to precisely say “Turtle Destruction Wave”. Its not a “real” word, just a rough translation, and it still functions as a cool badass word that no one actually says in conversation. Thats why some people translate it to “turtle shock wave” and other variations. It would be like if they translated cyborg saying “Booyah” to “Good!” in japanese. They would just leave it as Booyah in a dub, or just completely replace it with their own original phrase. Shitty example but you get the idea. Its the same thing with Bankai from Bleach. Nobody in Japan would translate “final release” as Bankai, its just a badass word with that meaning. As for Luffy, a translation is neccessary because in japanese, hes literally just saying “Rubber Rubber”. It doesnt sound super badass to them, hes just calling out his move. It sounds cool to us because its japanese, but it is quite literally just mundane japanese, not some badass phrase.

There are a few like Rurouni Kenshin and Rookies and others which are pretty damn good and comparable.
If I have to choose between this and the anime, as an adaptation of the manga? I'm probably picking this. I've watched all 8 episodes and enjoy the pacing far more than the anime, and as an adaptation it just works without losing any of the spirit of what makes the manga great.
No adaptation is ever gonna live up to the manga, but I think this might actually be a better piece of media than the anime.
@@sortastupid As for the overall rating, clearly below 8, I will give it 7.5 if I'm not in a good mood, and probably 7.9 if I'm in a good mood, and one of the causes of that rating is the lack of fighting skills and short-time fighting scenes like in the anime, and a very average CGI for fighting scenes. As for the plot and story, easily above 9, I will give it 9.15 for most. After all, One Piece built its hype because of a good fighting scene.
The work and passion that went into this show is beyond phenomenal.
I think the bar for Anime LA adaptations is very low that this adaptation surpassing most people’s expectations is yielding the overly positive attitude. I enjoyed watching it, I was super giddy and hyped.

guys I gotta be honest, I'm rather new to One Piece like I watched a couple episodes as a kid when it was on tv, I knew about the general concept of the show, the main crew etc but I'd still consider me new to One Piece, I was kinda worried how they could possibly adapt a show/ manga like that into live action but the traier was nice so I was already intrigued and not gonna lie.. - this show is easily one of the best shows I've watched and EASY one of the best Netflix shows (I might go as far as saying I like this even better than Stranger Things). So as someone who's pretty much completely blind this was such an enjoyment and it's nice to see you guys agree as die hard fans which makes the show even better imo.

Nah they fucking murdered it on so many fronts. Luffy looks like dumbass. Nami is on some gender equality bs and shouldn't even meet luffy when he was fighting morgan with zoro. Morgan didn't even have the map. They never sneaked into his place Luffy went through the front door instead of going through the sewers and he was observing Zoro for a while with Toby that he even helped join the navy later. Zoro fucking murdered the shit out of everyone in Morgans crew with some help from Luffy ,i can hardly call some choreography that and nami (who wasn't even there ) hitting ppl with a stick. Well glad you enjoyed it but that's not how one piece was. Personally I found it extremely painful to watch especially with the altered storyline and the lack of passion from the characters in comparison with the anime which made me emotional a bunch of times throughout the series.

I've so far watched the first 6 episodes. While I'm enjoying watching the show, I found I was really impatient when watching the series because, to me, East Blue is maybe the least interesting part of the series. So, I was checking my watch every few minutes. I also have ADHD so 🤷🏼♂. I just finished Baratie and it was excellent. But I love that we got to see stuff they off-screened in the manga like Zoro vs. Mr. 7. I loved that each title screen is a different Jolly Roger. And I love how they did the wanted posters! Blonde-haired kid at 3:23 is Smoker.

I just finished watching the Netflix One Piece for the first time. Never watched or read One Piece before this. I loved it so much I immediately started watching the anime after. This was so good.
Edit: I gave it a shot because I loved Avatar the Last Airbender (cartoon) and at some point you guys recommended One Piece if you like Avatar.
