Ever since those Portishead folks in Bristol found the magic that happens when you pitch a drum sample down and bath it in gloomy reverb, Trip Hop has been one of the most popular genres for people learning to make beats. Trip Hop, boom bap type beats, lofi-hiphop and nujazz from the 1990s seems to still inspire trip hop 2021. When we got requests to cover Trip Hop in this tutorial series, we wondered what people were really asking for. Trip Hop is a sample-loop based genre that doesn't require too much production wizardry, if you don't' want it to... In this tutorial, however, we'll cover those basics but we'll also delve further into the sound design theory that lies behind those loops so that you can create your own custom Trip Hop sounds and beats. For the nerds: We'll get down to the nitty gritty and you'll even learn to emulate that signature trip-hop MPC 2500 shuffle. - Hudba
DJ Shadow would be proud.
Yesss!
Facts
well in fact, DJ Shadow used to sample drum loops mate.......
@@breakfreak9238 that to
I thought using loops was cheating, so I programmed my own using samples. I then thought using samples was cheating, so I recorded real drums. I then thought that programming it was cheating, so I learned to play drums for real. I then thought using bought drums was cheating, so I learned to make my own. I then thought using premade skins was cheating, so I killed a goat and skinned it. I then thought that that was cheating too, so I grew my own goat from a baby goat. I also think that is cheating, but I’m not sure where to go from here. I haven’t made any music lately, what with the goat farming and all.
i forgot to like this a few weekss ago :)

Lmaoooooooooo
Let me just say, these tutorials are exceptional. For any user from beginner to advanced, any DAW, or genre. It's not just learning how to do something, but allowing people to understand HOW to produce music. Y'all make me a proud owner of Reason.
Thank you, Propellerhead, for defending the use of loops and spreading some useful information on sampling. I remember when I started fiddling on Reason 4 back in the days, some people were like "Oh, but you used loops so it's less original/authentic than X". Yeah, entire genres are based on sampling and things other people have made. It's not like all violin players carve their own violin from a piece of wood picked up in the forest, or keyboardists manufacture their own keyboard. That kind of cliché ignorant elitism needs to stop. It really boils down to how ideas are executed. That's what ultimately marks the difference between just drag and dropping a loop and processing/manipulating the same loop.
I'm really digging this series of videos, and I really like how you handled this topic in particular. I think the mantra of "Just because something is complex doesn't always mean it's better" is a message that needs to be absorbed by ALL musicians of ALL genres. Complexity is a means to an end, not an end itself. Fans of your music didn't become fans merely because of the way you routed and processed your signal, or how many notes you managed to cram into a measure... they're fans because, to them, the end result sounds good and creates an emotional connection.
Bah... all this trip hop has got me feeling deep and philosophical. Well played, Ryan! Carry on!
At the end, people don't care and won't notice if you used a loop or recorded drums yourself. I mean, when we hear our favorite hip-hop/electronic music songs we don't think about it
You guys are on a roll with these Super Neat Beat.... i am a reggae producer...i would love if you did one for reggae.. i am 100% Reason user...thank you
+guardianintlsound And/or dub.
+scamper robinson +guardianintlsound yep +dub SVP love them basic but great FX
Yes!!! Reggae
+guardianintlsound make it so!
+guardianintlsound Personally I'd like some DnB but reggae's good too.
This is probably the best tutorial I've ever seen.
But remember... Trip Hop comes from the Abstraction of Hip Hop Beats. It's not just a BoomBap beat. it has to be infused, trippy, smoched or spooky etc...
Man, possibly one of the best, most enjoyable, no-nonsense tutorials I've watched in a very long time.
Heading home to give it a crack right now!
Ryan you are the man, your tutorials are so informative and fun to watch. Thanks man!
These tutorials are freaking beautiful!
This is by far the most informative and inspiring tutorial on Trip Hop I've seen so far. Great knowledge of Drum design, tasty video editing and by and large a pleasure to watch! Thanks a lot for this beautiful content. I'm off to produce now! :)
I'm producing mainly trip hop and I'm thinking about buying some hardware gear. I already have a midi keyboard, guitars/bass and and audio interface. So should I buy a synthesizer for some trippy sounds, a drum machine for drum sounds or a sampler/ sampling pads?
I don't even use reason and I found this extremely helpful. this was a great walkthrough on how to create a simple trip hop beat. Glad you are assuring people that loops are safe and okay to use.
Seriously good tutorial, man. It's nice to finally get tutorials where someone actually knows what they're talking about.
that was literally amazing I loved every second of it. thank you for making this!!!
Keep those tutorials coming @Propellerhead guys. Even while not my genre, the tips for creativity are inspiring. Love it.
This is indeed suuuper neat. Thanks for the tip. I started using the slice&shuffle trick you showed at the very beginning and it's indeed a very quick and dirty way to turn ordinary beats into awesomeness. Thank you!
these vids are awesome, love them all. High quality tutorials !!!
love these tutorials!! thank you so much!!
I could watch these tutorials all day. Great job!
I've never seen the option in Kong to layer sounds by just one click. These tutorials are definitely GOLD.
Lovin' these tutorials! Great job guys.
I really love your tutorial. So valuable.
love how straight to business this tutorial is, also it reminds me of the narrative voice from a how it's made documentary
really like your tutorials man keep them coming
Thank you so much for this video! Subbed! I'm a rocker/metal head digging around and trying to learn the vibe and workflow of Trip/Ambiance/noise genres and your insights have sparked pretty cool ideas! Thank you sir!
All the time I thought my Loops have too much kicks in it - thanks for proving me I was on the right path
Two years later this is still an incredible tutorial. Thanks folks!
"It takes skill to explain something in a simple manner....." absolutely brilliant 👏
EXCELLENT!!!!!! Props is on a roll with these new videos!! Love it!
great video and series! for a future video, maybe hardstyle drums? i'd be interested to see how you guys went about creating the kick, I make my hardstyle kicks completely from scratch in antidote, ive never gone from a sample based approach, although i'd imagine that once you get the tone, the effect line would be similar. interested in seeing your take on it!
UR AMAZING. TYSM
Love Reason :) and love these vids...I always learn something even if its unrelated to the idea of the video! Its one thing all the other Daw companies lack....continuous support and motivation....
Holy molly this is amazing
Thank you. As always, it's fantastic.
incredible work, really inspiring to watch!
This video made me feel better about using loops. Thank you for that.
Really wanted to put the full track in loop. You should release it!

This is my favorite drum tutorial yet, thanks a lot for these! Also, nice editing on the video. :D

First version definitely sounds better with the loop. Thanks for the tutorial, I enjoy these. Keep it up!
This was super helpful and I'm not even a Reason user! Keep the awesome videos coming!
I love this! Great work, very appreciated!
Super quality tutorial. +1 subscriber
As usual, extremely informative and useful. Thank you for your work. Keep it up. Weekend Reason warriors ((teaching my university classes doesn't leave much time for beat making) need these types of creative boosts.
your tuts are awesome!
Fantastic tutorials here!
Excellent work yet again, these are so helpful and high quality! Even the meme usage is tolerable ;)
i seen about 1029247859843 tutorials ,, you might be the BEST !!!! EVER
that was........ just great , thanks
Bless you such an inspirational video many thanks 😊
all your videos are awesome
I would love to see Drum 'N Bass or Jungle... These videos are great
+Sam Curtis That'd be nice.
I find myself ending up with drums that are a lot closer to neurofunk and such. Which is fine, but I'd like to go a bit more clean.
+1 tutorial and tips on mastering breaks like golden era Photek please!
+PauLtus B Just fucking put an amen on Renoise, chop it up for taste, and bang on with it.
What don't you get?? Not hard mate, not by a long shot mate.
ANPHKI
Well there's more styles of DnB. Also ones where you're supposed to create every drum sound yourself. Also: renoise isn't in reason, also: why renoise? there's tons of ways to chop it up.
Also: why so aggressive?
PauLtus B With all due respect, your style sucks ass. Chopped breaks and subs - that's drum n' bass. Harsh EDM synths, modern compressing techniques and too overtly pristine high end - a turd in the form of music.
Aso you need some practice in terms of arranging and mixing, my friend. Checked some of the stuff on the channel. Most important thing, is to _listen_. Develop your ears.
Really nice tutorial, thanks mate!
Propellerhead, i just want to say thank you. I've been recording and mixing rock, metal, and jazz for years but i'm just starting to get an ear for adding trip hop in the mix. I can play a trip hop beat on my set no problem, but was going to have to muddle through the processing end of things. This tutorial is so helpful that it looks like i'm going to go buy my 1st version of reason since 3.0. Well done gentlemen. You just made a sale.
I mainly want to produce trip hop. I already have a (midi-) keyboard and guitars and bass. What should I buy next? A synthesizer for some trippy sounds, a drum machine or a sampler/sampling and drum pads? Would you buy something else? It would be awesome to hear some hardware recommendations from a fellow trip hop fan
@@lk-gt9xv hey man hope ur producing is going well. kinda depends on ur desired outcome/setting. If its for producing recordings, u have everything u need with reason and ur midi keyboard. No need to buy anything else. If ur in a trip hop group, a synth or keyboard could add a nice touch to ur live sound, especially a keyboard w a rhodes sample. But man a good vocalist can really bring a live group to life. Portishead still a regular in my playlist. If ur a one man live show and u dont wanna use ur computer id probably go with a sampler w a sequencer and part mute function. That can get pretty pricey, but at the same time ur replacing members of a band w a piece of gear so i guess maybe its justified. Personally my favorite thing to do (working on trax at home) is slicing samples of flute, rhodes, and drums. Really diggin that see ya feel from chinsaku. Hope some of thats helpful man. Best of luck.
GREAT TUTORIAL .
Really nice tutorial! Thanks.
How simple it is, easy to understand, yet it is effective!
Super nice tutorial, I really enjoyed that one. I would really like to see a jungle / drum and bass one next!
Thank you so much for this
Great stuff.
Tried to apply this technique to Cubase 9. Worked as a charm :)
Thanks.
This tutorial is amazing and my favorite by far. Please, please continue making them. I still think we need some solid videos on sample chopping and boom bap :)
+Michael Gorsuch I agree :)

Your tutorials are simply amazing. Just wish you could upload the songs (reason) files so we could test the beats and its variations with the entire project. Is it possible?
What a great video
These videos are great, +Propellerhead. Keep it up!
Among next Tutorials, PLEASE: Classic Hip-Hop beat (NY or Westcoast style) would be AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Thank you for this tutorials.
Awesome!

What an awesome video, I did have some house work to do today but I think I will just make Trip Hop instead :D
This was dope
I don't do trip hop but still learned something. Thanks. .
I totally needed this lol. Been tryin to make some cool trip hop kinda stuff, and I always can't get the drums to pop like I want em too. I try to stay away from loops out of pride, or thinking other people are gonna give me crap about it, but fuck it. Let's do this shit.
Well Done !
Man I have no words to thank you for these videos.... they really help me and my 5yr old kid who likes making music. Bought him Reason 9 for Christmas and he wants to play with it more than the iPad lol! These videos help us not stumble so much since I hadn't been on Reason since V.4... thanks so much for the awesome production, quality of video, great commentary, amazing tips and the level of professionalism you put into every aspect of these series .... really invaluable!!!
So happy to hear you're having fun and making music, and especially together with your son. My dad shared music with me as a kid and it had a profound impact on the direction I went in life. So from one former kid to one present dad... high five!! :) /ryan
Propellerhead Thanks so much!! Will share when we finish our little song, which for some random reason he decided it should be named "Africa Flamingo" LOL
Propellerhead , What did you press to duplicate the drum pattern at 0:57 ? Thank You ! Im following along 👍
leonlion83 place cursor on clip and hold ctrl key and drag into place.... hope that helps. If doesn't work msg me. I haven't played with it in awhile
I don't even have Reason and I found the init portion quick and to the point with Ferris asking you're still here, hilarious. NW haha
DnB would be nice :D Thanks again for the tutorial :D
This tutorial is a slay
thank you
Still my favorite tutorial.
Ryan, your tutorials are AMAZING! Any chance you could do something on Lofi Hiphop? drums or anything you find, also i thank you for changing my thoughts on drum loops. Keep up with the amazing Videos
