  • In this episode I look at what brought Squadron Sinister back together, the first appearance of Nebulon, and a new Dr. Spectrum.

Such a cool character. I can't believe they've never brought him back.

They did bring him back for one more story arc. He becomes less cool in that one. It's one of stories I'll probably cover one day but there is no pressing outcry for more Nebulon content.

    2 questions for CosmicComics
    1) What is the first comic you remember reading? Mine was SHAZAM#1 (Hooked me on comics on contact)
    2) What's the first comic you remember buying yourself? Superboy #206. It had ghosts, exploding clones, and giant space spiders. All done with Mike Grell penciling.
I loved both Marvel and DC but preferred DC because their stories were self contained. Hard to keep up with continuing stories of the newsstand in early '70s southern WV. Marvel Unlimited has complete runs of most series. Not Daredevil though. They skipped over the section I started so long ago with until 2020. It was like they were teasing me. Even at that early point, I knew Daredevil going up against Man-Thing was a big deal. It was a literal monster. How could he possibly beat him? Really soured me on "To be continued next issue". I didn't see another Daredevil for at least a year.
Love all your videos. I think you and I would've traded a lot of comics if we'd grown up together.

Marvel Universe: I didn't mention it in my recent video - but one of the reasons I'm going to start covering more than Marvel Comics on the channel, is due to the accessibility of not everything, but a HUGE chunk of Marvel's back catalog. When I started this channel you still couldn't go read most if any of the stories I wanted to discuss. For decades the only way to read many of these books was the painstaking process of tracking them down one at a time, and even then always feeling an itch that maybe you were missing something. Maybe there was another tie-in to the story-arc that you didn't know about. And then then internet came along and changed all that to the point where I can go and look at a character's full chronological order of appearances, etc., etc. I felt like I was relating stories to people who didn't have access to those stories without a considerable investment of time and money. Marvel Universe has changed all that. Go read the stories! (not you, just in general). They even have Timely Comics stuff on there now! I also find Marvel Universes inexplicable gaps a confounding mystery but am shocked by how much they continue to fill in year over year. I'll probably talk about Marvel from time to time moving forward but it won't be following stories - the videos will more likely focus on random odd bits, things I find interesting such as the second set of Quantum Bands nobody ever talks about (looking at you Blue Marvel!). I am looking forward to discussing comics outside of the Marvel Universe as that's what continues to drive my passion for reading comics.
As for your questions - the first comics I remember reading was probably G.I. Joe off the rack a tiny local grocery store. I never bought them, just read what I could as fast as I could while mom checked out the groceries.
At some point I was given some Transformer comics and the first one I read was #8 where Ratchet comes back to the Ark and discovers all of the transformers deactivated and Prime's head removed from his body. Between GI Joe and Transformers - as a kid, it always felt like the "real" episodic story was getting told in the comics while the cartoons were "for kids."
I am sure I bought a few comics before this but Quasar and Marvel's push of "heroes for 90's" (which were mostly reskins or continuations of older out of rotation characters but led me to believe I was at the start of something new) was what finally got me to become a monthly reader and eventually to get my first holds box.
I miss the days where everything was not a constant event. This year alone has seen Marvel go from Empyr, directly into X of Swords, and immediately into King in Black. That's too much. I don't feel most Marvel characters are given time to breath or develop these days. Sometimes a writer just needs a year or more with a character, no interruptions, to get the reader invested and lead up to some good pay offs. I love crossovers but many times my favorite moments with individual characters come from when they are doing their own thing.
Indeed, we probably would have had fun swapping books back in the day in an attempt to piece together the Marvel jigsaw.

Originally Nighthawk was about to warned the Avengers about Nebulon and the Squadron sinisters flooding the world. But, Nebulon turned Nighthawk into a phantom like appearance so no one can see or hear him if he or any of the Squadron members thinking about warning anyone.

Good info! I've got one more Nebulon video on the back burner but he gets so little love that it will be awhile before I come back to it.

Also at 4:07 you mention that the Squad doesn't notice or care that Dr. Spectrum is new. Honestly the JLA is the same. Doesn't matter who has the ring, they're Green Lantern Now. Well, except for Guy Gardener anyway. It's a rotating position.

Is that because it's a new JLA every five years now anyway? Too soon? I am shocked to see DC doing it again. It might help new sales but it has killed the value on their back issues. My local shop reg sells full sets of Rebirth and such for well below the cover price. (Same for the Marvel series that keep getting rebooted - looking at you GotG). DC Infinite will hopefully get people interested in some the stories that were told in the last 15-20 years between the reboots.

Was Nebulon really that bad a guy? He was only doing what he felt was right!
