Quasar - Origin Story

  • The origin story of Quasar as laid out in Quasar #1.
    I tried as hard as I could to talk about Mark Gruenwald while putting this episode together but every time I added him in it took over the entire episode. My apologies. For those who don't know - Mark wrote every issue of Quasar but one. He passed away at far too young an age and although I haven't brought it up before the entirety of my CosmicComics series is dedicated to him. At some point I will need to step aside from Quasar and do an episode on Mark but until then I hope you enjoy the beginning of the journey.

    Finally a CZcams video about Quasar! One of my favorite yet under-valued and under-appreciated heroes! Going to go look for your other Quasar vids now!

      For this channel - all roads (eventually) lead back to Quasar. But context is key and I'm taking a longform approach.

      Awesome! Thanks for the views! As soon as I finish up Thanos Early life and the Thanos War I should be getting back to Quasar for a bit. I have been trying for 3+ years to fill the gaps between Quasar #1 and Quasar #2. Got a few big arcs left to hit before I get there.

    I want a Quasar movie, anyone else? It's a great origin, they could introduce him in Avengers 4. Then flashback to his origin in a solo film.

      Definitely! James Gunn did tease a little Quasar on his twitter post awhile back. Unfortunately most of the buzz in the Marvel Cinematic Universe seems to swirling around Nova instead. I can't understand why Nova gets all the love....

    Thank you, CosmicComics. I'd been looking for this very story. I thought I recalled it having been written by Mark Gruenwald; you confirmed it. In Avengers Standoff #1 Wendell Vaughn presented Avril Kincaid as his successor as Quasar. I was going to write a letter to Marvel, where I'd discuss "lack of killer instinct" and "go with the flow" to avoid being consumed by energy feedback, and wondered if Vaughn discussed these matters with Kincaid. Brian Michael Bendis wrote the Avengers story. BTW I'm glad to see you're an admirer of Gruenwald. I remember him in his pre-Marvel days as writer for fanzine Omniverse, and had hoped he'd become editor-in-chief at Marvel.

    • @Cosmic.Comics
      @Cosmic.Comics  Před 8 lety +1

      Yeah, I love Gruenwald's stuff (albeit I have not read his Captain America run). At some point I plan on doing a video just on him (as in many ways this channel is very much a dedication to Mark). Every time I try to talk about him in a video it just ends up taking over the video so I have to cut it out. If not for Mark's early death I am certain editor-in-chief would have happened. Those are some GREAT points on Quasar's passing of the torch. I'm a LONG ways from getting to that point in the story. I'm hoping that post Secret Wars there might be a place for Quasar in the Marvel U once again. Thanks for the insightful comment!

    • @wdd3141
      @wdd3141 Před 8 lety +1

      Mea culpa, it was actually Nick Spencer who wrote the Avengers story. Mark died of a congenital heart problem in his early 40s; he'd be my age now. You won't like hearing this, but I think his being a stickler for continuity to reinforce the realism of stories would have gotten in the way of plans other writers and editors had to cheat on continuity to extend the longevity of the characters. After he passed away they apparently cried the appropriate crocodile tears and proceeded to dismantle his legacy at Marvel. Crisis on Infinite Marvel Earths reboot reboot reboot is crazy to me and not at all enjoyable. Mark's work on Captain America included the super soldier serum design limits that debilitated Cap. A formula invented by Superia extended his life. In one brief sequence we see Steve Rogers catching some thieves at a comic book shop. He was surprised they would steal, considering the books contained stories of heroes, moral people, who don't steal. But the thieves were only interested in the rarity of the books and their monetary worth, not the contents. On top of that, the shop owner said we need more people like the Punisher and Wolverine.

    • @Cosmic.Comics
      @Cosmic.Comics  Před 8 lety +1

      wdd3141 I'll say this much - If Mark Gru were with us today... I think the wiki over @ Marvel.com would be a far sight better. Love the comic shop Captain America story. That had to have been before Image started publishing - not that Cap would read those kind of comics (typed in jest). Just wish I could find my love for Cap! (That's the only reason I haven't read it). Although, I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed watching the relationship between Cap and Quasar develop and change over the years from mentor, to equals, to Wendell eventually growing beyond Earth.

    Quasar during the infinity gauntlet and infinity war is my favorite story arc. Right about the time he attends Eon's funeral, Thanos crashes it then sends copies of 4 previous protectors of the universe. Traveling through the dimension of manifestations, nullifying himself and going on the long road to resurrection and reaquiring the quantum bands.

      Way to get me digging through a longbox. Everything on this channel will and does eventually relate back to Quasar. This, to me, is one of the MOST fascinating parts of the MU. In the Infinity Gauntlet Thanos literally created this character (or did Origin create this character? - I'll deal will these questions WAY down the line). BUT the most amazing part is there are now TWO sets of Quantum Bands. The character of Blue Marvel eventually fades into obscurity but it doesn't change the fact that there is another set of the bands out there! Some writer at Marvel needs to dig in and come up with a story that brings this to the forefront of peoples attention. Yeah, its a great issue.

    Isn't Quasar the biological father of Stakar Ogord?
    Also, Quasar is from my home state of Wisconsin. That alone earns him a high ranking on my list of faves.
    Just think how awesome a Quasar movie could be if it was set in the 1970's. SHIELD is still around, the aesthetics fit perfectly.

      I'll be the first to admit that I'm not always up to date on modern marvel. So I'm not sure. The last time I heard something on this I was thinking the finger was pointed toward Adam Warlock being Peter Quills father. But I didn't do any research before throwing that out there. That being said I hope to eventually cover everything Quasar related so if he is - I'll get there. It's going to be a looooong journey though. Thanks for commenting!

      Was this ever confirmed in the comics? I know what happens in GotG 2 but on not certain if it ever got expressed in Marvel-Prime or -616 or whatever they are calling it now. I need to finish reading Ultimates 2 Vol 2. I've been waiting to for the dust to settle from the Eternity War before discussing a number of the larger cosmic entities (Galactus, Death, High Tribunal, etc.) due to the continuous massive changes and retcons.
