This is one of the more candid, no-bullshit interviews I've seen with Ellroy. Usually his persona dominates, but he sounds quite sincere through all of this.

American Tabloid should be a huge HBO show.

Agreed. Hell, we need the Ellroy Cinematic Universe.

James Ellroy is one of the greatest hard boiled crime writers around. So when he says, because he is from Los Angeles, that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, was what it was really like at that time. That’s what it was like. It doesn’t matter if some of the people watching didn’t like his answer. You’re not from Los Angeles, and you didn’t grow up there in the 60s. So you have no idea.

Every time I see an interview with him, I feel like they only mention The Black Dhalia and LA Confidential ... as if The Big Nowhere and American Tabloid aren't the greatest crime books ever written.

The hardest author to read I've ever encountered. So worth the effort. Blood's a Rover is a work of art.

You should read Cormac McCarthy's 'Blood Meridian'.

I’m always struck by what a nice, genuine guy Ellroy seems to be despite his penchant for tossing interviewers intentionally misleading BS

It was a pleasure. Really wish he could get the tv rights back to some of his work so we could get some awesome shows. We can see his stuff perfectly on HBO Max.

Mr. Ellroy, try reading Derek Raymond's I Was Dora Suarez. The late, UK crime writer is my all-time favorite crime scribe. His Crime Factory Series is second to none.

Ellroy's books are far too dense and have such a wide canvas, a 90-minute film can't possibly do them justice.

  • @kevinreily2529

Why LA? What a stupid question. Is this interviewer from NYC or San Francisco? Only somebody from either of those places would ask someone to defend themselves because they live in or write about LA.

My god how in the hell can someone be so full of them self and be taken seriously. I didn't think much of once upon a time in hollywood. Whats up with the weird fictional end scene ?
