I don't even understand how Ellroy exploiting his mom's murder to get attention for Black Dahlia early in his career is a bad or distasteful thing. Not only did him doing so allow his formerly forgotten mother some level of recognition as a victim who never received justice, it also granted her and her name a level of immortality within the mythology of LA, as well as allowed her, in a way, to despite losing out on all opportunity to help her son grow to excel and succeed once murdered, to be able to do those things from beyond the grave
