He calls himself the "Demon Dog" of crime fiction: James Ellroy is as confounding and charismatic as one of his own literary creations. The author sits down with FRANCE 24's Olivia Salazar-Winspear to talk about the electric atmosphere during World War II and the women who inspired the characters in the latest instalment of his second L.A. Quartet, "This Storm". The best-selling author also tells us why the past - with no computers or cellphones - is his natural habitat in both his personal and professional endeavours.

I’ve purchased every Ellroy novel in hardcover since The Black Dahlia (personalized autographed copy). He is one of America’s greatest living writers. One day there should be an archive of his notes, outlines, and research papers used in his writing process.

I'd like to read his outlines just as much as his books.

He refused to be walked into a political conversation for a short fluff television bit. Celebrities should take note.

.....as i'm going into the last 100 pages of This Storm, and thoroughly addicted to his books (too bad we can't totally read em in historical order).....gives the same kick as a Charles Dickens/Philip K.Dick/Jim Thompson and a couple of others. WE need our fixes.....okay 100 more pages to go.....

There's something wrong with it when your actions destroy entire parts of the world for your gain.

I like a lot of Ellroy's novels, but he's so full of crap. He lavishly praised the film version of L.A. Confidential when it came out, and he's commented extensively on current events over the years. You can't trust a word this guy says in interviews.
