  • Thanks for watching! Try the biscuits out and let me know what you think 💕
4 cups all purpose flour, plus more for dusting2 tablespoons baking powder1/4 pound (1 stick) SALTED butter, cold, cut into 1/2-inch cubes2 large eggs, beaten1 ½ cups milk, plus more as needed and for brushing
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Add the butter & lard, using your hands, cut them into the flour until pea-like crumbs form. Stir in the beaten eggs to the milk. Then pour in the mixture until the dough comes together into a sticky mass. You may need more flour if it's too wet. When ready, preheat oven to 400 °F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Dust a little flour onto your work surface then put the dough onto the work surface and use your hands (flour them) or rolling pin to push it down and flat. Fold dough into thirds. Roll out again and repeat process. Then roll it to 1/2 inch thick. Use regular mouth jar ring to cut out about 20 biscuits. Reform the scraps of dough into a circle again to cut more. Transfer biscuits to prepared baking sheet and arrange them so they are touching each other. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.

Laramie, many years ago I lost my husband with two toddlers and pregnant with my third. I was in the bottom of a dry well. Two months after my father passed away. I drove from Nebraska to California with my three babies, scared to death. We ate peanut butter sandwiches and I froze milk to have for the children.
The children are now stable happy Adults in their late forties and I am 73 with a great husband and a comfortable home. But occasionally I remember that late Autumn and what we women come through. I am grateful for my life and I think only when a person comes through tough times, do we really appreciate the better ones

This brought tears to my eyes. I shared your comment with my husband too. We sometimes wonder how our children will turn out with the childhood we’re giving them. There’s peace knowing others who have had trials and their children have grown up to be strong and sturdy adults. Thank you so much for sharing this ♥️

Didn’t mean to make you cry but you were so upfront about your struggles, I was compelled to tell you about a hard time in my life. I firmly believe in looking ahead and not to dwell in the past but my kids know the story and it has helped them to stand up against challenges in their lives. God is watching over your family just like He watched over us. I am as sure of this as I know the sun will come up in the morning

Your story about God’s provision reminds me of my family’s life while my husband was in seminary. There were so many times we didn’t know how we would pay for rent, utilities, or groceries. I was working temporary jobs, while my husband worked as a janitor for the seminary. There was always money to come in just when we needed it. We experienced so many miracles. Our life has been so rich with His blessings.

Please open your Bible and read the book of 1 John 4:16. That read - And we have come to know and believe the love that God has for us . God is love ❤, and the one who remains in love remains in union with God and God remains in union with him . Love whom God loves and hate what God hates 😊 May the Almighty God continue to provide what you and your family need. May you continue to put Faith in God ( his name is JEHOVAH ) . The maker of the Heavens and the Earth.

Here are a couple of suggestions about making the biscuits. 1) Instead of round shapes, use a knife, pastry cutter or pizza roller and cut them into rectangles. That way you don't need to pull up the scraps to form a second batch of round biscuits that usually look deformed and tougher. Large rectangle shaped biscuits also make great sandwich bread or breakfast egg sandwich. No waste. 2) Once you roll out the dough into a rectangle on your counter, place the dough directly onto a cookie sheet or square/rectangle baking dish and then cut the biscuits into the rectangle shape. That way the biscuits don't get out of shape from picking them up individually off the counter and placing onto the cookie sheet/baking dish. It also saves a couple of minutes.

This is touching. I have been often in your situation. I have lived on food stamps and charity from our church or other people. We have been richly blessed. In 2021 I got COVID for the first time. It was the worst case I have ever experienced since. Our children's parochial school brought over a turkey and a few extra groceries. The state gave us a free Thanksgiving dinner to cook with another turkey. Then our church gave us two more turkeys. We had so much turkey that we couldn't even store it all. My teenage daughter made Thanksgiving dinner that year complete with homemade pumpkin pie and roast turkey. She did almost everything from scratch even while I was sick in bed.
I am so grateful for the help we get. This year our children's school helped us with Christmas presents. We got lots of nice things. My parents helped also even though they really ought not to. They spoil us. It's the gifts of presents and food that help us to keep paying for 6 kids to attend Catholic school. Somehow we come up with the tuition payments. Somehow we manage to always have enough food for the 10 of us in our fridge and freezer. Somehow we can always pay the rent to my parents. These are God's blessings.

You know you are so right.
When 2020 shut downs happened, luckily my husbands job was considered essential so he never missed a beat at work. However, i saw and heard what so many was going through, i saw the lack of at grocery stores. I started learning to cook from scratch, started learning to garden and preserve our harvest with canning, dehydrating and freezing. I cleared out an large closet that really wasnt being used for much and had husband build shelves. I started catching a deal here and there and woukd stock up when i could. My husband wasnt so sure about the need for all this. But let me do it cause like I told him, so many are losing jobs, and many companies are now having to make cut backs and I knew he was the highest paid employee that got benefits that others didnt due to them being in his contract, so I knew if his company made cuts, he could be one to go.
Then a yr after telling him that, Dec 30th, 2022 my husband was laid off.
Luckily i had been preparing with learning to cook almost everything from scratch to stocking our pantry and our freezers. Along with done made the purchase of a pressure and water bath canner and plenty of jars that I was finding dirt cheap from others who no longer canned and stocked up on good quality lids. I had also had several months worth of hygiene products, stopped buying most cleaning products and learned to make my own, and paid several bills ahead.
So we was okay financially, we didnt have to really worry as much as we would have other wise, cause before I started all the changes we literally lived paycheck to paycheck. By the time he lost his job I saved so much money I was paying a few bills ahead.
When he lost his job we made the difficult decision to clean out his 401k and pay off as many debts as we possibly could. We knew that he wouldnt find a job, especially during this time, that would offer the pay he had before or the benefits. We are very thankful we did this as he had to take a $12 hr pay cut, no more company car or company phone, travels expenses to and from work no longer paid, we now had to purchase another car, pay auto insurance, and maintence on that car as well as gas mileage. Plus medical insurance is more than we paid before and less coverage. But he works 10 mins from home now vs 1 1/2 hr each way to and from work. And sonce we thought ahead on everything, we are financially doing ok. Bills are getting paid, no stuggle to cover food costs. We keep things simple, and plan ahead for big purchaes that we can not get past having to make. We are doing so much better and we fully plan to continue these practices and implement more. We are currently in the process of selling our home and moving 700 miles away. We fully plan to purchase a much cheaper home, renovate it ourselves, and starting a small homestead within our needs and abilities. And moving my sick mother in with us, which will financially help her and help us too as we can know whats going on with her and take care of her as family should.
I dont know how i knew to plan ahead like that, it was a strong gutt feeling that I couldnt ignore, just as it is now for our future plans. I can only say GOD has lead us to where and what we need(ed) to do and its all by his grace.

Tonya you have a story similar to mine. When covid started I was working as a Para Educator for an elementary school and my husband had an "essential job" Luckily back when couponing became a thing in the 90's I caught the fever and began putting stuff away either through couponing or a really good discount. Thankfully I had done this because when the store shelves became bare we had plenty. What we did do though was start paying off debt like crazy. We made fairly good money at the time and because nothing was really open to spend money we started paying extra on our debts instead of going to dinner or shopping. Every time we paid something off we started on another thing. Soon we were debt free. We then started really putting money away in our savings. We were able to buy a used car and pay cash and in 2023 we bought a fixer upper 3 bedroom 1 bath on 1/3 acre in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for $23,000 cash. We are debt free and mortgage free and I work part-time as a teacher which I love. I cook by scratch and we have a very small income now and I wouldn't change a thing. They call where we live God's country and I feel so blessed to be here. God has truly blessed us!

My grandmother would make baking powder biscuits as they were a quick bread alternative upon returning from working in the fields. She taught me how to make them, and you're so right, be gently and only mix until the dough comes together and fold. You're teaching your children to respect the blessings God gives us. I've found so many times over my lifespan of 75 years, how often, when things are at their bleakest, something will happen which comes unexpectedly as a lifeline, whether it's a gift of a little money or an unexpected gift of food. I like to acknowledge my hardest times, but would rather remember the times when someone, or something came to pass which eased my burden, cheered my day, and helped my life. Of course, if you are a person of faith, give due praise but it doesn't matter who you attribute as the cause of the help, just to give thanks to the universe for coming to your aid, and for the good folks we meet in life, who sometimes see or feel your need and come to your assistance. Excellent video, thank you.

Making any dough, (bread, pasta, nann, etc) is an art. You learned early. I just perfected flour tortillas. My family sees me making them, and they hover in the kitchen to wait for the hot ones to come out of the cast iron pan. Simple, simple food. We all eat the first ones blowing the hot air out of our mouths. We do sit down and eat together, but tortilla meals start around the stove. It’s fun

I am new to your content. Enjoying it a lot so far. I am also living extremely low income. Just passing along something you probably know? That biscuits can be (and are usually) made without the eggs. Just the flour, baking powder, salt, lard and/or butter and milk. A gentle mix and pat out, and you can cut and bake the fluffiest, most wonderful biscuits ever! It saves the eggs for meals!

Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?" This verse tells me: Trust in God, he will take care of you. Always, because he created you and loves you. Something I did while my family was going up. After almost every meal there would leftovers, a spoonful of corn, mashed potatoes, macaroni and tomatoes, or maybe a sausage pattie, a hot dog. Anything. Instead of it going into my mouth I was cleaning up the kitchen, I put them into a plastic freezer container. When I 2 of the containers full with whatever, we had soup that night. I browned ground meat with onion and celery and whatever seasonings I chose that day. At great way of using leftovers that would just go in the garbage or my belly. Both places it didn't need to go!

I think you are amazing, a very good teacher of many lessons. A rather hard life not only does not have to be scary it can be wonderful. The children who grow up in this kind of loving home will be strong, not afraid of hard times & always close to each other. I know this because I grew up in this kind of home. I had a great childhood, really never felt poor. Learned to love God, be generous in many ways & appreciate a good life. Keep up what you are doing, it helps.
