as for steve his down taunt actually is a greeting, it's very common in the community to do this to show you're not hostile especially in servers where you don't always have the time or ability to chat.
The most common way I've heard it referred to as is "A universal sign of peace."
Usually if a player doesn't do this while approaching you in multiplayer survival... You should probably run if you're not ready to fight.
THE UNIVERSAL SIGN OF PEACE
It can also be used for dance nights
I can't believe he thought it was a tea bag, Looks like someone has been playing too many 1st person shooters.
@@greenlight5307 if you play it right, Minecraft is a first person shooter.
I always saw Bowser’s last animation as a reference of how he’s usually defeated. Falling into lava or falling in general. Probably wrong though.
Same, it looks like a fake out to make you think he’s gonna fall like in SMB and all NSMBs
I always thought that if it was a reference to that, he would hop into the air and wave his legs around.
Ye I think it’s falling into lava reference
Thats what I was thinkin too, Kinda like a "Look who's falling now!" Taunt. Or, alternatively, a Taunt That's kind of a false "Oh No! I appear to be Vulnerable at this very moment!" Only to Beat Up anyone who comes by, Because weirdly enough Both Fit Bowser.
So did I, actually.
For Bowser's teeter taunt, I always thought it was from Super Mario 64. If Bowser charges you, but reaches the edge, he stops himself and teeters near the edge.
I wanna think its like a subtle reference to his fights in bridges in Super Mario Bros., where he always falls to the lava, it could be like a fake out of him falling off the bridge
Oh wow i actually didnt even catch that lol
To be honest, I figured it was just a nod to how many times Bowser died via falling off a bridge into lava, or just falling in general.
Isn't that the animation he does when he misses an attack in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story? Like when he charges an attack and you press the button too late.
Actually, Luigi's "Aw, Shucks" taunt actually DOES have a reference!
Luigi does it for when he loses at a certain mini-game in Mario Party 1 and 2, which I believe pre-dates the 64 Smash Bros.
Howowowow
Nice!!! And Im curious if it has a spike/meteor hitbox in the newer smash games
@@mgfcronaronithehomie5467in smash 64, it isnt a meteor, in smash melee, it only is a meteor when the opponent is on the ledge, in brawl and onward, it is a meteor
Yoshi's wave to the screen taunt is reference to Yoshi's Story. When he sniffs the air and discovers a secret he will turn to the screen striking that waving pose to tell you there is something hidden there. That is what it is taken from.
@Alberto Josua Scammer!
I think he also does this pose in the ending of smw
Yep 😊
49:57 Robin's "Let's tip the scales/Time to tip the scales" up taunt is a reference to one of their crit quotes in FE Awakening
If you wanna be pedantic, DK's up taunt could be referencing his idle animation in the first DKC where he stands up and bangs his chest while hollering.
Yeah I was recently playing DKC and thought the same thing
no noise though since smash is weird about his voice
I WAS HOPING SOMEONE WOULD SAY THIS!
Gronky krong
It definitely is
Origin of every item is one that I think no one has really covered yet just in case you need more ideas
I wonder why Pokémon can only say there name
@toad_sage16 I mean other Pokémon for there in-game reason
@@Lefty-qe2dq at least Lucario can say "MAX AURAAAAA!!!"
@@chamtheman551 using telepathy
Id imagine those would be self explanatory
Steve's downtaunt is a commonly used greeting in minecraft. Before the combat update that added shields one could block with a sword. it would often be paired with the sneaking and 'blocking' of one's swword as a respectfull greeting. Basicaly showing you mean no harm. These days its just the croutching and bowing of one's head.
I used to love using Mario's grow taunt, while playing on large mode, and giving him a mushroom
Bro you predicted Bowser's Fury
You forgot to mention that Pit's voice lines have changed since Smash 4, he now says "Come on" for up taunt and "Is that all you got?" for side taunt.
I’m disappointed that one of Ness’ taunts isn’t a Fuzzy Pickles. That’d be funny.
I also would’ve loved the Monkey Dance Taunt for Lucas.
“Fuzzy Pickles”? “Monkey Dance”?
…I’m sorry; I’ve never played the original EarthBound/Mother 2, nor Mother 3-I’ve only dabbled in EarthBound Beginnings/Mother 1.
@@pooky-changaming4089 I haven't gotten to mother 3, but in mother 2(or earthbound) randomly across the game a cameraman will descend from the sky and ask Ness and his party members to pose for a picture while saying the words 'fuzzy pickles' instead of 'cheese'....because Earthbound
@@pooky-changaming4089 monkey dance is where in mother 3 there is a monkey that dances. Other characters need to learn the dance that it does to open some doors.
@@pooky-changaming4089 Monkey Dance/Wess Dance is a joke in Mother 3 where a really important door to a secret room can only be opened by doing a dance in front of it
We got this czcams.com/video/aT-3yjA23d8/video.html
The Inklings have to have some of my favorite taunts. Being able to spam he Booyah button like in the original game makes me so happy! Mega Man and Simon are awesome too!
1:10:09 You most likely didn't see my comment, but this taunt is based on the fight with him in Kingdom Hearts 1. Hit him enough times and he'll do that same hand motion and then do something that'll most likely kill you.
Sora's keyblade spin taunt is indeed a reference to his Olympus Colosseum victory pose there, BUT that itself originally was a reference to Cloud's victory pose from FFVII! Which is even more perfect because that is one of Cloud's taunts too!
Sora side taunt where he "grunts" is actually the voice line that can occur when a item is used in the kh games not spells like firaga or thundaga but items like potions or elixirs
1:09:53 this is the universal sign of peace much like the air punching. When you crouch like that it’s saying “I’m friendly, I wont hurt you” much like squidbagging *can* be in Splatoon
Favorite taunts
1. "YOU'RE TOO SLOW!!!"
2. 🎶"La la la la la la."🎶
3. "Show me your moves."
4. "Looking cool Joker."
5. "Hey hey come on."
“There is another”
Steve’s built-in T-bag
Don't forget Dedede's crouching animation
I "think you can take me?" and Sonics brawl taunt "Come on, step it up!"
Dark Samus' up taunt is CLEARLY a reference to the "you know I had to do it to em" pose
More info for Cloud's up-taunt. As he is swinging his sword, he shouts "Not interested" in Japanese. This is a reference to Cloud's famous quote during Final Fantasy VII.
I thought his famous quote was "It's Strifing Time", and then he Strifes all over the place, on everything and everyone.
Or "get help".
Sonic's down taunt might have originated from his breakdance when you finish a level with a gold medal in Sonic Advance 3.
I always thought the Lon Lon milk taunt was a reference to the ranch owner in OoT who would give you a bottle of milk and say that the best way to drink it is to put a hand on your hip and chug the whole thing. Something like that.
Fun fact: Luigi’s kick taunt does damage to his opponents which started as a programming error in SSB64 but in Melee and onwards it was done on purpose
32:50 might just be me, but charizard's up taunt always reminded me of his sprite in pokemon yellow.
I was thinking it looked like his pose as Gigantamax charizard, but those games didn’t release until 2019 so idk
Zelda's wave taunt could be a reference to the minish cap where she waves to link when going to the festival
26:49
Samus doesn't talk much in the Metroid series, period, and her Paralyzer (the gun she's using in Smash) in her home series doesn't give her any "whip" or other "tether" abilities; it's simply a non-damaging, paralyzing burst of energy that stuns for a little longer than Ice Beam. Her taunts showcasing her natural hyperagility, I can buy into that, but for the most part, all three of ZSS's taunts are Smash originals. She never whips around her Paralyzer (as her emergency pistol as stated in the Zero Suit sequence of Zero Mission, she never takes that risk) like that, and as of Brawl, they had no source material for Samus except for the manga and a five-minute gameplay stealth sequence in Zero Mission.
Interesting take on it, though.
1:28 I think that's a reference to his Idle Animation on DK Country on SNES
15:49 Dr. Mario's down taunt could be a reference to medical examination. For example, during chest percussion, a dullness will mean an effusion in the lung cavity, due to a trauma. Dr. Mario checks himself to find out if his enemies did injure him?
Little Mac's down taunt is more or less based on the shimmy he does to regain health on the Wii. After you knock down an opponent, you can mash the 1 and 2 buttons (or shake the controllers if you are playing with motion controlls) and Mac will throw practice punches and shake himself off, regening health in the process. Also, up taunt may be a reference to his injured victory pose, which is also referenced as a victory animation in Ultimate.
3:40 The waving at the camera is a reference to Yoshi's Story where if Yoshi sniffs out something in the game, he'll wave at the camera to tell the player they are right on top of a secret item or something
Jokers taunt where he looks the other way is actually artwork from the pause menus I think
Ness' "Okey" taunt pose is based on the clay model he had from Mother 2 (Japanese version of Earthbound)'s promotional material.
Crouching multiple times as Steve is a greeting in Minecraft in the event that:
1. You can't chat.
2. You don't have time to type something out.
3. You don't trust someone enough to start typing and render yourself unable to move.
In Toon Link’s up taunt, the pose he ends on is probably pulled from key art for the Wind Waker and Wind Waker HD.
"And his taunts are meant to reflect this."
As he shows him playing with his reflector.
I see what you did there.
3:36 so with yoshi, his taunt from Smash 64 onward is based on an animation from Yoshi's Story where if he's near a hidden fruit/item after sniffing for it, he'll wave at the camera to let the player know
42:37 this taunt isn't referencing the sticks because sticks were introduced in 2020's Animal Crossing New Horizons, where on the previous games, shaking trees only gave fruits, furniture, money, wasps and sometimes spiders!
ultimate Zelda has such phenomenal taunts, I love how expressive she is
Ikr
12:04 for this bowser taunt, it looks very accurate to the final phase in the bowser fight in Yoshi Topsy Turvy where he teeters on a pole and you need to move your gameboy left and right to knock him off.
We need an “origin of every weapon” for everyone who uses a blade, blaster/gun, etc
facts
49:57 Robin’s up taunt is a reference to one of their Critical Hit quotes. In Smash ultimate only Female Robin says “Time to tip the scales”.
I know Fire Emblem in Smash is not a popular thing so I apologize.
With Sonic's breakdance taunt, the animation may be original, but the reference is a lore reference. One of Sonic's likes is breakdancing and in Sonic Battle on the GBA, a lot of his heavy moves are breakdance inspired including one with a one-handed handstand flourish at the end just like in the Generations animation.
I feel like he knew this but really wanted to give that tidbit about Generations being in development very soon after brawls release lol. Sonic and breakdancing go hand in hand for a long time
I'm just sad that Daisy doesn't have a "Hi! I'm Daisy!" taunt
Good, I am happy about that
For Ness' up taunt the pose he strikes there when he says "okay" is actually the exact same pose as the clay model made for Ness for promotional art.
Ken's down taunt is actually his intro animation and forward taunt from Alpha, and it later reappeared with a different animation in Street Fighter III: 2nd Impact. In that game, taunting boosts the power of his next attack (excluding throws), and his hand can hit twice for minimal damage (but it's too slow to combo). The SFIII variant is what appeared in IV, though the intro uses the original gesture from Alpha.
Is Dan in that game? If so, can you stretch out a round with taunting and dodging then instantly take out the opponent?
@@theonlybilge he is not
The "Teabag" from Minecraft Steve is indeed no teabagging, it IS a common used form of communication in greeting someone or saying thank u, like when someone brought u ressources you need. Sometimes it is even used together with jumping and punching, so Steve's other taunt. Also I don't know when teabagging became a thing but Minecraft players used this since the first days of online play back at the beginning of the 2010'ths, so...
Teabagging has been going on since way before Minecraft.
The taunt where Bowser looks like he's gonna fall over could entirely be based off of one of his "attacks" in super mario 64, where he charges at mario, and skids to a halt when he misses/is about to fall off the stage.
I thought it was a reference to Bowsers Inside Story whenever you would charge a punch for too long which causes him to trip and fall on his enemy.
At the end of Toon Link's up taunt he strikes a pose very briefly that looks exactly like his pose on the Wind Waker box art
12:00 Bowser's "jumping on one foot" taunt could be based from the Mario Party series. He did a lot of silly dancing and moving in that series.
33:00 Charizard's "standing up straight" taunt could be based on when he finally listens to Ash in the anime, or it could be based on Ridley's similar taunt. lol
Revisiting this video and
3:40 Yoshi's taunt where he looks at the camera and waves his arms around is a reference to Yoshi's Story. In that game, Yoshi did that pose when he sniffed out hidden items in a level.
38:45 Lucario's "charging up aura" taunt, you said you couldn't find a specific reference. You answered your own question though: aura is Lucario's whole thing. In the main Pokemon games, the more damage Lucario takes until it faints, the more damage it does also. Come to think of it, that might be Incineroar's thing too..
(I know other people have possibly covered these)
@@supermariofan That is not how the main pokémon games work. Only specific moves and abilities let you do more damage when you have been damaged, and none of them are Lucario's signature thing. Pretty sure Lucario doesn't have access to any of them, actually. The abilities pretty much exclusive to the starters, not sure about the moves.
The only thing Lucario gets that might reference his aura functions in Smash is the ability Justified, but that only raises attack when hit with dark type moves specifically and makes no references to aura. I mean... I guess it learns counter? But once again, not it's signature thing (in fact, nobody runs counter on Lucario, it's not a good strategy) and not about aura.
@@123till321 Oh. I thought that was Lucario's thing, and he could perform it with any move. Beg pardon.
@@123till321 it doesn't work the same as in smash but aura is probably a reference to the mystery of mew
@@supermariofan Yeah it's fine lol. Sorry if I came off as a bit rude
1:09:59 Steve’s crouching taunt can be a teabag but also a sing of teaming and showing you aren’t a threat which doesn’t really make any since for this game lol
Lucario's side taunt could be a reference to the movie, Lucario and the mystery of mew. Where during the ending lucario releases aura into the tree of life in a similar way. You can even see the sphere for a second.
Fun fact about the last Ike taunt; in Fire Emblem Fates, if you have an Ike amiibo (or someone in the Vanguard class), they'll do that pose, complete with the sword they're using in the ground, after defeating an enemy unit.
The Wind Waker taunt (where he uses the actual item with the same name) ends with the pose from the game's box art and multiple other appearences of toon link
1:07:30 Little known fact: For Min Min's up taunt, Sephiroth skewers Mario. This taunt is a reference to the movie Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, where Sephiroth orders a Chocobo barbecue to go with his ramen. But in Smash, he makes it an Italian barbecue with Mario's help.
Were you high or something when you wrote that comment? Because that made no sense.
ROTFLMAO
11:57 hey dude, great video! I'm thinking this specific Bowser taunt could be a reference to Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, seeing as how if you mistime his punch attack he'll fall on top of the victim much like he fakes doing so here.
The taunt was in Brawl, so it predates Bowser's Inside Story.
Ash’s Charizard is known for acting full of itself, so maybe Smash Charizard”s side taunt is a reference to that?
I think it would be nice to see a origins on the spirit fights, there are a lot of references in those. I think you could cover these by series?
Isabelle's up taunt looks more like the "Goodbye" emote rather than the "Greetings" one but it's only a minor difference
Yoshi's down taunt actually comes form Yoshi's Story. You can sniff out secrets in that game and Yoshi reacts like in the taunt when he finds one.
Mewtwo's spin animation in Melee is based on when it uses a status move in Stadium 2 and Colosseum . . . which, hilariously, means it could also literally be Taunting you, because Taunt is a status move.
Also, "Rain" was utter misery. Reyn's name is pronounced with the "ey" pronounced like the word "eye".
In regards to Robin's taunts, I only know of one VERY CLEAR reference.
Fire Emblem Awakening, as well as Fates/Three Houses have skill activation messages. Cheekly little things each character says before they either activate a special skill - like Aether for example - or getting a critical hit.
One of Robin's quotes is quite literally, "Time to tip the Scales!" which is their up taunt in Smash. I'm fairly certain the moves they do are Smash original, but the quote comes from Awakening itself.
I think for Diddy Kong, his side taunt, it's reference to the cutscenes in Subspace Emissary, the very first one he was in, at least
Great concept, but it it could've been better researched. You missed quite a few. Since I didn't see this one mentioned, I figured that I'd add that Toon Link's baton taunt is a direct reference to the Wind Waker manual art. It's probably the most iconic piece of imagery from the Wind Waker.
11:06 It could be a reference to the happy emotion in Super Princess Peach where she spins in a tornado with musical notes around
MinMin's crane pose is also her stance in ARMS' character select screen where the fighters are bopping to the music
May be a bit of a stretch, but Dr. Mario grinding his shoe could be a reference to Mario grinding his shoe into Luigi's foot in Luigi's trophy celebration in Mario Power Tennis as it's one of the few times Mario taunts someone in a game outside of smash, not connected to Dr. Mario in any real way, but could've been a throw away, since he's an echo fighter of Mario
Officially, Dr Mario isn’t classed as an Echo
You are the best man!! Taking the time to create this bigger time video!! Awesome!! Thanks for sharing! c:
7:23 which in turn is a reference to the infamous “Home Alone” face
The foot grinding and shoulder pat for doctor Mario are Japanese motions that are more akin to taunts there than in the west. Similar to how pulling on a lower eyelid and sticking your tongue out means flipping someone off in Japan. And the Ultimate up taunt for Charizard is taken from either Pokken Tournament or from Charizard's return where he actually listens to and fully trusts Ash. The ending of the up taunt for Toon Link is a reference to his manual or box art for Wind Waker. And I'm pretty sure Inceneroar's taunts are from the sun and moon anime where he is seen in a 4 way free for all style pokemon wrestling match within the anime.
Aahhhh
It might be stretching it but Bowser Jr.'s up taunt might me a reference to how in all the mainline games he's appeared in he spews fire balls while bowser always spews big tongues of fire
The crouching rapidly really is a friendly greeting in Minecraft, usually between friends or to signal that you don't want to fight.
We love taunts from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate!
Who is we?
So, we all characters and DLC Fighters Included is doing their taunts in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate did.
Dr.Mario's Up-Taunt just reminds me of that one moment in mario tennis when Luigi wins. If you know, you know.
My good sir you forgot that king Dedede has a fourth taunt.
Love all the new series
keep it up man
Marth says "I won't lose!" in his side taunt in Ultimate
And there goes the Rain pronunciation when it's more like Rine like watermelon husk.
Now it’s IGN time
great vid! the charizard taunt might be a reference to a gesture he does in the anime where he tries to look tall by standing on his tippy toes when he is in a scary face face-off (no pun intended) versus tododile but that seems a little too hidden to really comment on, either way it may just be a taunt to show his pride as a tall fire dragon thingie
I think Charizard puffing out his chest might be a reference to his sorta tough guy personality in the anime. While I don’t recall any instance of him doing that exact pose I do remember he was very confident and stubborn. So puffing out his chest like that just makes sense
Young Links Milk drink taunt is a direct cocky of when he drinks a potion or milk in Ocarina of Time
The taunt where Yoshi waves is probably a reference to SMW2: Yoshi’s Island, where if he wins a minigame he will jump and wave in a similar way
15:00
*I couldn’t find anything that was LINKED to the ZELDA series*
Sora’s down taunt is most likely based off of when he completes a dive in Dream Drop Distance
1:14:23 Obviously the "Stopga" "Aeroga" and "Curaga" do appear in Kindom Hearts, they are originally from the Final Fantasy series as various Magic spells you can use, usually having the same effects, except Aeroga is primarily offensive Wind-based Black Magic.
(Stopga first appears in Final Fantasy 12, and Final Fantasy 13, Aeroga is a reoccurring white(Final Fantasy 3)/blue(Final Fantasy 5)/or black magic (Final Fantasy 6 etc.) offensive spell usually doing Ice and Wind, or just Wind magic damage, Curaga is a reoccurring white magic healing spell, hailing all the way back from Final Fantasy 1.
If Stopga first appeared in a Final Fantasy game in Final Fantasy XII, then it appeared in Kingdom Hearts before it appeared in Final Fantasy.
You kind of turned into an FF nerd there for a moment and messed up your facts a bit. Stopga first appeared in the first Kingdom Hearts. I'm very certain Aaronitmar knew all that.
16:00
Capt Falcon also had 2 taunt animations in Melee, depending on with way you were facing, they were both “show your moves” but there’s a different animation
12:10 It could be a reference for when he dessperately tries to go to the other side of the bridge you break for him to fall before falling into the lava
Ike’s down taunt comes from Fire Emblem Fates as his victory animation
Mario's side taunt in Brawl and Smash 4 is a reference to an animation that's only ever seen in the New Super Mario Bros. series when he clears a level. He spins once, takes his hat off, and puts it back on.
Yoshi's taunt that he's had since the first game is likely a reference to the sniffing mechanic in Yoshi's Story, where, when you sniff out a secret, your Yoshi will look to the camera and wave twice.
Luigi's peace sign was also in the original version of Super Mario World, where he had the same sprites as Mario, and his fingerguns could be a reference to one of his victory poses from Melee, where he also does double fingerguns.
If we're really stretching, we could say that Dr. Mario's foot-grinding taunt could be a reference to Luigi's cup victory animation in Mario Power Tennis, where Mario does the same thing to Luigi's foot.
Roy's side taunt is a better match for that sprite that you showed for his original taunt.
Pit's neutral-air predates Kid Icarus: Uprising.
That's not how "Reyn" is pronounced. It's pronounced like "rye."
Also, Aura is based on ki, and manipulating ki is a thing a lot of martial artists in fiction can do, like Ryu from Street Fighter.
Charizards ultimate down taunt is also a reference to the Japanese Pokemon Red box art and the Pokemon FRLG credits where he does a very similar pose
I’m furious you thought Steve’s down taunt wasn’t the peace sign, but a mechanic.
Ironic means the opposite of what you expected, not something that you didn't expect
One (again little) thing for Snake's taunts: if you watch closely, you can see that he enters that box different. In one he uses just one hand, the other two have a minor difference too, but I'd need to play it to see what exactly was different
I think the taunt where Lucas talks to the rope snake is a reference of the part where the rope snake losses it's confidence or something in the Mr. Saturn village where it leaves Duster and becomes an NPC
Sora's down taunt feels so lonely, like it was really supposed to have Donald and goofy with him
I’m disappointed that Daisy didn’t have a Taunt saying Hi I’m Daisy !!
I disagree
i just subbed ,seems that you put a lot of effort in ur vids .am eitet to see more
Kazuya's dount taunt *could* be a reference to his transformation in the final (mandatory) story battle in Tekken 7, in the mid battle transitions that go from Normal Kazuya to 3-eyed Kazuya (which only haves him being able to use inferno), and then to Devil Kazuya.
Although it could also be a reference to his transformation animation from Tekken Tag 2, where it's identical to the animation used in Tekken 7.
Taunts Origin the Movie :)
Personal I like how each characters Taunts it show their personality through the animation especially in Ultimate,
(9:05) Is it just one word, or three?
jigg, jiggly and puff.
Fun fact: The Slime from Dragon Quest was originally considered to be in Smash if Sakurai wasn't able to use Hero
Lucario's Side taunt could be a reference to his Gen 4 sprite where he strikes a similar pose but instead fist it's a palm with aura flowing out of it
