    The bending looks elegant because it is choreographed by actual martial artists during the show's production. Each type of bending was influenced by a selected martial art that fits the style and theme of the element being bent. It's like watching animated magical kungfu. There is a reason this show is popular lol

    The four bending styles are patterned after specific real-world martial arts:
    Fire - Northern Shaolin Kung Fu
    Water - Tai Chi
    Earth - Hung Gar
    Air - Baguazhang
    They look so fluid and realistic because the animators were made to attend classes so as to closer study the movements of the different styles. Sifu Kisu, a master of multiple martial arts, is listed as a consultant in the show credits, and even has a character patterned after him.
    Haru's father, Tyro, is voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson, a legendary voice actor who, notably and amongst many, many others, also voices the Mauler Twins in the show "Invincible".

    you see bending as an individual art ; try to picture it at a societal level : firebenders have a huge advantage in welding, melting... all things metal. Whereas water and earth are good for... buildings construction. And there is no more air society. So the real advantages of the fire nation actually are the military and the technological advancement. Just look at ships.

    the Avater power system isnt like in Pokemone, where an element stop another.
    In Basic Terms every Element has power to figth of any other element, Its more the Individual Skill that wins the figth, which you are gonna see multiple times in the show. Generally speaking Air benders are considerd very strong because they are the most skillful, but they dodge more then they attack. Fire bender are normally very aggresive in their fighting style, constantly on attack. Water is very defensive style, working more with counterattack and Earth is a very steady style, they rarly dodge, normally they block. all bending is balanced, just depends on the User. And you will see user more skillfull then other in the same catagory

    @CarlieAndAnge
    With respect to episode 6 “Imprisoned’ you may want to know that George Takei who plays SULU in the Original STAR Trek 1966-1968, the first 7 Star Trek Movies, the ancestor in Mulan, conventions and cameo appearances, is the actor who plays the voice of the Warden in the “Imprisoned” episode. This allowed George Takei to draw on his own experiences of Prison camp Wardens, given how WWII impacted his life.
    During WWII, when George Takei was ages 5 through 9, he and his family were forcibly put in a Japanese Internment Camp, in the United States, because the US Government was afraid of all Americans of Japanese Origin or Descent. He survived the 4 war years as a kid, in a US guarded prison camp, because President FDR thought any American who had any tie to Japan, or had Japanese Ancestry was a possible threat to the national security of the United States.
    George Takei in the 2010’s wrote the play Allegiance (and acted in it) as a way of documenting his experiences growing up in a prison camp, just because of his Japanese ancestry until WWII was over. Then he and his family members that survived, (some did not) were allowed to go back to their previous existence, if possible. Currently George Takei is alive, well, and 86 years old.
    Those that survived were granted US citizenship but the US government did not formally apologize to the survivors until August 10th 1988, when Ronald Reagan signed the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 (at least 40+) years after the events. The act granted each surviving internee $20,000 in compensation, which was equivalent to $43,000 in 2022. Payments began in 1990, only to those survivors currently Alive, at the time the redress checks were sent out. A total of 82,219 received redress checks. The legislation stated that government actions had been based on "race prejudice, war hysteria, and a failure of political leadership" as opposed to legitimate security reasons.
    According to Wikipedia, “The Civil Liberties Act of 1988, Restitution for World War II internment of Japanese-Americans and Aleuts, states that it is intended to:
    “…1 acknowledge the fundamental injustice of the evacuation, relocation, and internment of United States citizens and permanent resident aliens of Japanese ancestry during World War II;
    … 2 apologize on behalf of the people of the United States for the evacuation, relocation, and internment of such citizens and permanent resident aliens;
    …3 provide for a public education fund to finance efforts to inform the public about the internment of such individuals so as to prevent the recurrence of any similar event;
    …4 make restitution to those individuals of Japanese ancestry who were interned;
    …5 make restitution to Aleut residents of the Pribilof Islands and the Aleutian Islands west of Unimak Island, in settlement of United States obligations in equity and at law, for -
    injustices suffered and unreasonable hardships endured while those Aleut residents were under United States control during World War II;
    …6 personal property taken or destroyed by United States forces during World War II;
    community property, including community church property, taken or destroyed by United States forces during World War II; and
    traditional village lands on Attu Island not rehabilitated after World War II for Aleut occupation or other productive use;
    discourage the occurrence of similar injustices and violations of civil liberties in the future; and
    …7 make more credible and sincere any declaration of concern by the United States over violations of human rights committed by other nations.”

    I realize that I'm a week late to this, but as a person from a country which has a strongly-present history with this sort of thing, and as a person who is reasonably familiar with that history, I always like to give some context with this episode.
    During the Nazi occupation of Europe, virtually all occupied countries had their own offshoot of the Nazi Party, which -governed- sorry, ruled, the occupied nation on the German Nazi Party's behalf. (I learned relatively recently that Poland was pretty much the sole exception to this, as they were ruled directly by the NSDAP -- the National-Sozialistische Deutsche Arbeiter Partei, aka the German Nazi Party ["National-Sozialism" being where the abbreviation "Nazi"/"Nazism" comes from; and "Deutsch" being German, for, well........ "German"]).
    My country of the Netherlands, for example, was under German occupation ruled by the NSB, the "Nationaal-Socialistische Bond".
    Now, during the occupation, all occupied countries would see the emergence of people who were not in fact directly associated with the local/national Nazi Party, but who would still do anything and everything to aid the Nazis in whatever way the Nazis desired. This to include betraying their own countrymen to the Nazis, and even betraying those countrymen who had helped, or even saved, such people in the past. It is widely believed that Anne Frank was betrayed by just such a person, leading to her being shipped off by train to the Concentration Camps, and her eventual death at just age 15.
    Why they did these things, we can only speculate. Maybe it's because they thought the Nazis would reward them in some way, or maybe they were scared of being targeted (and potentially ending up on one of "those" trains) themselves.
    At any rate, the countries of Europe called these people by a French word: collaborateurs. It means exactly what a native English speaker would guess it means.
    The point being: the old man from _Imprisoned_ is a textbook collaborateur. And I do mean: *_textbook_* . As in: if there was a textbook about the role of collaborateurs in WWII, it would be liable to have a picture of this old guy next to it, along with a description of what he did to Haru.
    Another interesting aspect is why the Fire Nation cracked down so ruthlessly on Earthbending. Now, yes, the threat posed by the Earthbenders is certainly part of it -- but I feel that there is more to it than that.
    All the way back in episode 1, you might recall that Katara and Sokka described Waterbending as such: "An ancient art, unique to our culture." And the Warden in this episode used these words to describe Earthbending: "employing that brutish savagery that passes for Bending among you people".
    I feel that, alongside the military threat or the threat of rebellion, the Fire Nation was also intending to eliminate Earthbending with the goal of eliminating the Earth Kingdom culture itself. Both because they view that culture as "savagery"; and also for the purposes of being better able to replace the resulting "culture void" with their own Fire Nation culture, which they of course view as "superior".
    All of this is Fascism 101.

    @Ower8x Před 20 dny +1

    As some people here already mentioned you need to think of bending not on the level of individual but society ...
    Imagine a Blacksmith that can fire bend and as such control the fire as he wants .. what kind of advantage that would be
    What advantage fire benders would have when melding or welding or melting metal, they could do it better cleaner and more efficient ....
    Plus they are on Vulcanic islands so they would have plenty of metals and ores at their disposal
    Basically anything and everything where you use fire they would have an advantage ... being able to control the heat better, needing less fuel ... etc .... that would naturally be a big boon for advancing technology ... as can be seen in the show ... while other nations have sail boats ... the fire nation has massive steam boats ... etc ...
    plus you cant separate a fire bender from his source of fire ... as as we are told by uncle Iroh a few episodes ago fire bending comes from the breath ... making it harder to stop a fire bender, or capture one and keep one captured
    Unlike water and earth benders who you can separate from the element they need to bend as seen here ...
    Only other bender that cant be separated were air benders its one of the reasons they were wiped out ...

    No, firebending is not weaker or stronger than any other bendings, it's all situational and depends on level of mastery, on environment, and even on time of the day, if we speak about fire and water.
    Also, fire is not weaker than water or earth by default, because fire is created by the user, so even if you use water or earth to put down the fire, the firebender can create more and more and overpower your earth, break it by the shear force, or completely evaporate your water

    Bending has less to do with counters E.g water beats fire. (there is 4 elements otherwise a triangle would make more sense in balancing) that most shows use like pokemon. It is more of a environment(for example in snow water would have an advantage) , intelligence, and individual strength/skill that makes which bender is better than other.
    They will never explain it in the show that is why it is a soft spoiler but in almost every fight those 3 are usually what causes who wins.

    i dunno why but this is my least favorite episode of the show by FAR; there isn’t another in the series that i wouldn’t watch over this one

      @@pullimau8555 The painted lady is the worst one for me personally. This episode and the great divide both have at least some interesting parts that I enjoy.

      @@gokuby wow, really? the painted lady is one of my favorites. This one is very low for me but I enjoy the great divide

      Nah to me the great divide and the fortune teller one are my least favorite ones. The painted lady and this one may not be very high on my list, but they show Katara’s character and that’s enough to be enjoyable to me
