    I would choose the Philippines because I have a personal history and love for the Philippines. I was stationed at Clark from 1990-to 91, and my grandfather was a Marine and caught by the Japanese at Corregidor in WW2.

      Yeah its good for visiting and having a good time. But living nah I'm sure there are places in thailand that is quiet and peaceful.
      I've been to their northern islands and i can say I'm surprise how free and quiet the place are. There are still people around but their live styles are so different from their central and southern countrymen.
      They have stores that have no clerk , groceries that's open you just take what you need and leave your money on a basket. And if you have no money there's a ledger you could write on and list the things you want to take and when you are gonna pay up. I have never seen such trust to your fellow human beings. And the spirit of that trust makes other people do the same it's was honestly infective. I didnt knew that us human beings could possibly capable of such trust.
      And road side meals are always good and clean. I remember my cousin took me to a restaurant right next to a highway and hidden behind tall trees and bushes. Its like a secret restaurant. No signs just 5 tables and a small menu.
      Best they served us this crunchy pork and i thought it was sprayed over with mayonnaise with bits of mest on it turns out it was ox brain and used as condiments. Taste great.

    Well, your appraisal of the 2 countries is reasonably fair & accurate. Having spent 13 years permanently in Thailand but having travelled far more extensively in The Philippines in recent times.
    Your personal situation with being married to a Filipino is without doubt going to bias your decision on the topic. For me it really comes down to individual choice, anybody considering living in either country needs to spend time in both to make a final decision. Personally I'm very happy in either country and divide my time between the two. It's exhausting and complex seeing people making one for one comparisons. But be assured both countries are very welcoming with lots of happy, smiling faces. The only word of caution, PLEASE make sure your finances are sufficient for the duration. Because in either The Philippines or Thailand running out of money supply can be very problematic...

    I have been living in Chiang Mai for the last 14 years and have been happy here. (I am Australian). 9 years ago I bought an apartment here for about AUD$50,00 and it has worked out well. However in the last couple of years with Covid restrictions many things changed. Although Thailand and Chiang Mai in particular have opened up a lot, somehow I feel the need for a major change in my life. Have not been to the Philippines for 35 years (I am 73, but in excellent health). Last time there I was mugged and robbed at gunpoint in Manila, so that soured me on ever going back. However all things change. Have been doing some research online, and Davao City or Cagayan de Oro seem like suitable places. If I had married in Thailand no doubt I would feel differently. As it is, I have been a bachelor all my life. I have no financial problems whatsover, and have not found Thai Immigration difficult or expensive. Have a substantial income from Australia in the form of rent from my Australian house, corporate bonds, and other extremely secure investments. Have no interest in moving back to Australia. All of my family there have died because I am the youngest by far. In addition, many of the old friendships there have become tenuous over the years. Obviously I have to think the matter through thoroughly, because if I make the move, I will not want to do it again. Will probably visit the Philippines on my way back from Australia in November. Will try to ensure I simply change planes in Manila. Do not want to spend even one night there.

      Thai students who changed those days was that they couldn't take the entrance exams for state universities. The values of Thai people at that time, if they couldn't get into a state university, they should have graduated from abroad and the Philippines was a colony of the United States And use English widely. near Thailand and the cost is not very high compared to studying in Europe, America or Australia , So the middle class in Thailand who have enough money will send their children to study in Singapore, Philippines and Malaysia if they fail the exam. But later, the students who graduated from the Philippines had problems and were unable to work. So know that there are many private universities that sell their degree certificates. Filipino graduates are required to take a written test. to receive a professional license

    I think in terms of homebase, it's more likely to be that of the Philippines, knowing it's affinities with the Western World and much more Global Mobility of it's Population. It's also consider how the Philippines acts like a launchpad in the Asia-Pacific between the East Asia upto Siberia in the North, Mainland Southeast Asia upto Indian Subcontinent in the West, Maritime Southeast Asia upto Australia in the South, and Pacific Islands in the East.
    Likewise, most Filipinos have an easy access to it's exotic Asian travel destinations like Thailand, Vietnam, China, Taiwan, Hongkong, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and Cambodia.

    Great info. Thank you. You mentioned you'd choose Thailand if you were younger and single. Also that CZcamsrs are leaving Thailand because of fairly recent visa requirement changes. • @DrLawaytravels
      @DrLawaytravels  Pƙed 2 lety

      If I was younger with no family I would not get a home base I would be purely nomadic. It is much less expensive in Thailand to get short term more affordable accommodation than most of the Philippines. That changes if you are willing to commit to a longer period of time. There is also a very large group of foreigners in Thailand in that age range who are from lots of different countries that have created a start up and free lancer community. That would be good to tap into. As an established business I really do not need that anymore. The CZcams thing would take way to long to explain, if enough people are interested I will do a video on it. Thanks

      @@marick_2183 You’re right about this. Filipinos are very insecure people and would always want validation from foreigners. This is caused by Spanish invasion for more than three centuries plus Japan for several years. Moreso, Filipinos are gullible. Influencers (and politicians) take advantage of it. Filipinos really believe that all the good stuff that foreigners say about the culture, food, places, etc when in reality, these CZcamsrs just want more subscribers and views.

    You made a telling point about Filipinos, you said your wife picked up Thai quickly and you are absolutely right. When I started traveling abroad in some out of the way places for Shell like Hungary, way back in the 90's I thought well you won't find a Pinoy there but I did. Pinoys have been working overseas starting in the 70's in many places and now we are everywhere. I can tell you that unlike expat European or American we don't have corporate support structure or even a job when we first venture going into a country where there may be a job opportunity. So you plunk a Pinoy down in a foreign country he will learn the local language quickly - just listening to people speak and then he/she will find a way to survive then he will bring others and create some support structure amongst fellow Filipino OFWs. Every OFW I met in the oddest places where you may think there wouldn't have been a Pinoy (because sometimes you never know a fellow Pinoy by just looking at them) could speak the local language and thrived and survived there.

    my wife is Filipina and plus we inherited a small piece of land,otherwise it would be Thailand hands down , its way less polluted and over populated , cleaner , better beaches, hotels, better food, transportation etc etc..Thailand has wildlife where as any wildlife in Philippines has long since been consumed or killed by the population .Thais seem more considerate its very common for Filipinos to have several barking dogs and several crowing roosters even tho they have many neighbors in close proximity , Thais i do not see that as much....any way all is not lost as it is easy to fly out to any where in Asia as its all close by and escape for a while

    Thank you very much for the review i wanted to go to thailand but visa issues and cost of life going up plus language discourage me. The philippine look amazing. In Canada a condo is around 265000k and you get nothing, in the Philippines you can get one for 100k that is by the beach... what's there to consider. Retire try to meet a good filippina and enjoy the rest of my life in the sunshine. I know there is a retirement visa available.
