    I fabricated the 30' aluminum truss ramp to take up to my off grid property in one day! Well, let's be honest... I helped Calvin and the crew at Pacific Coast Metal Craft get it done... Next step is to take this up to the property and get it installed. Thanks for following the journey!

    Nice shop. Pretty good looking ramp. You need to add a wider cross bar under your deck that sticks out beyond your side rails. To this you need to install diagonal braces to prevent someone balling against the rail and breaking the side rail off. You have a long lever against a small weld now. Lean on one hard and listen to the welds pop. Nice design overall but needs added diagonals to prevent the failure I just presented to you.

      Humbling is when one ends up walking around with a reattached digit inserted into a hole in the abdomen and stitched into place for 4 months while the body’s internal cells that know what heck is real go to work fixing the outside’s “mistake”. The physical mistake. Not the mental one. The mental mistake is “not paying attention to what one is doing”. Attention. Is. Doing.

    You really need to clamp metal parts when they are that small and the twist drill is that big. There's too much chance of the bit dragging the part out of your hand as it breaks through, or winding its way up the drill flutes. At the very least, clamp a fence across the table that butts against the part, or use a vice. Aluminium also sticks to the drill bit, so WD40 or paraffin, or diesel to stop that. Candle wax works, but not so well, plus it doesn't make your hands smell and is easy to apply.

    • @hifartingoctopuss
      @hifartingoctopuss Před 2 lety +1

      It's not that dangerous with that part, drill is, and should be moving slowly enough it's not going to be dangerous. That small pillar drill would probably just stop even if u got ur sleeve sucked in. And you use cutting fluid, not any of those things u mentioned.

    I don't agree with the drainhole philosophy.. As long as all the parts are completely welded there will be no build-up of water and risk of expansion damage from freezing water. The water condensation from the entrapped air will never be a volume large enough to cause problems. In closed compartments oxygen will be used in a initial oxidation then stopp when there is now more oxygen, making the entrapped air inert. The downside of ventholes is that you allow water and air to access. Over time you can get oxidation clogging the drain holes and then you get trouble..

    Wear three life jackets when transporting that truss. At “Tenkiller Lake” in NE Oklahoma, the lake levels can rise as much as 30’ during a Spring flood event. The floating dock marinas maintain access to the parking lot with very long trusses. How high can the tide be in this estuary?

Was told by judge that it would have been legal to fill the boat that belonged on the trailer with lumber, but not the use of the trailer for utility purposes , sans a boat. It could however obviously, legally be pulled empty as well. This was in Louisiana. What are the laws in your state? just curious.

      You do, but if you did it before you weld it would grow right back. So it actually needs to be removed as the welding process goes. He's using a mig setup here so I believe it's a flux core aluminum filler wire that chemically removes the oxide layer. An alternative is AC tig which uses one half of the AC wave to electrically remove the oxide

    A 30 footer is pretty short then again there is no tidal swing on a lake. A 40 footer is bare minimum for tidal us aka salt water, a 50 is ideal. Aluminum ramps ain't cheap, last for ever thou, for you're style cedar decking is the way to go, I would bolt wood sleepers to the cross members then screw you're decking to it. That way if you ever have to replace the decking the aluminum cross members are not peppered with holes from self tappers.

    Don't know much about welding, but why have the autofeeding welding to do spot welding but then change to a stick weld after? Why not just stick with one method?

    • @Total_Egal
      @Total_Egal Před 2 lety

      the autofeeding is quicker and more easy to bridge some gaps between the larger pieces. you can more easy reach the inside corners. but it will allways be little bit more rough and ugly, you get some splatter arround.
      the other method is cleaner without splatter, gets better quality smaller smoother welds since this part is not structural bot where you and others will touch the railings more often its more important to get soft welding beats.
      also you can control temps better. with the small coverplae to the thin ends of tubing you have less material as a heatsink arround and will burn trugh more quickly with the handgun.
      the positioning even upside and on the underside of the plates is more easy with the smaller and lightweight handdevice.
      if you got the different tools just in arms reach you can choose whats best for the job and gab it

    • @scotttaber6824
      @scotttaber6824 Před 2 lety

      He used a spool gun and mug welded the majority of the ramp, he TIG welded NOT stick welded the end caps because it’s a prettier weld. TIG welding imparts a lot more heat into the material than MIG and would have led to more deformation of the material as well as being a much slower process overall.
