Not to mention that what might be considered as "budget" in some select few countries are actually the "The highest I can possibly go if I don't have any children. No, really." tier in the rest of the world as your flagshit models are simply way out of the reach for the vast majority of the people, including in their dreams.
I for one, don't care at all about the performance of the new "phone"s as long as the tech in them is 2017 "flagshit at a budget" grade or their later, midrange offerings with better efficiency. In terms of Samsung's lineup I'd say not the A series anymore but M or even F series would do for most people, including me (though I have a hard time tolerating the OEM ROMs and the ultimate promise of "we won't provide OS upgrades forever" but, that's some other topic I guess).
Until Wi-Fi 7 & AR & hands-free motion controllers are within reach I'll keep not caring about the latest & greatest flagshit "phone"s and, just pick what's a good value at the local 2nd hand market while also being popular among the custom ROMs communities, if my Mi 6 (2017, Sd835) breaks beyond repair or something.

Watched this on my own A53 and have been loving every minute with it (owned since Black Friday '22). I came from having owned the A50 for three years, with no issues, loving everything about it. Main reasons I upgraded were the two extra gigs of RAM (I work in film/TV prod and do a lot of multitasking during the day), 5G cellular connectivity, improved cameras and stereo amp speakers. Don't listen to the bad reviews--speakers are great, fingerprint sensor is great (MUCH better than the A50), car calls are great... for the price, this is exactly what I was expecting. Only their flagships get 4 OS upgrades and 5 years of security updates. But still the software policy is way better than what other phone manufacturers are offering at this price point. My only concern is that they may slow the phone with the updates at the end of the software cycle.

Samsung's Android 12 update is what caused a ton of these weird bugs and slowdowns, and upgrading to Android 13 caused a noticeable performance boost on my phone.
One bug that hasn't been fixed, is this: when having both Google Assistant and Bixby set to listen to their trigger phrases, they randomly stop working. Disabling one of the two fixes the problem.
Also if you want better bass on the speakers, the phone's software has an equalizer built in, and you can make them sound way better with some fine tuning.

Apple technically has a mid tier phone (iPhone SE3), but IMO it only exists to make the more premium phones look good by comparison. Really its only redeeming qualities are being a cheaper iOS device, for people who want iOS, and having a top of the line processor, which destroys battery life. Meanwhile most Android manufacturers throw tons of features at their mid range phones, and the processors are usually good enough to handle most less demanding games (which make up the overwhelming majority of the mobile gaming segment).

The combination of superior silicon + long term support (iPhone 5S ~10 yrs old just received an update yesterday) kinda makes the case against a midrange iPhone and Apple’s data might reflect that. Spot on. I traded in to Samsung my ancient Note 4 for the A53 at launch at a big discount and after getting over the loss of the pen and the headphone jack (bought Bluetooth buds) I found it well built, great battery life and does everything well. I don't play any games on it so no worries about the CPU or GPU power. Videos look great on it. For recording videos though, the Note 4 had better mics. I enabled the new battery preserver mode that a software update delivered, limiting the max charge to 85%. With the big battery in it, you still can go well over a day on a charge and don't have to stress the battery by charging to 100%. When the battery does age, you can switch off the limiter to eek out the battery a bit more. Still... wish they'd bring back removable batteries, like on the Note 4. I changed the battery twice on it and so could use it for many years until the OS was just too old and unsupported.

Great video! I think the fact that several different use cases were discussed in this video really made this one stand out. I'm still a bit surprised you hadn't mentioned that the Pixel 6 has a much stronger processor in weighing alternatives (since camera and processor are the 6a's advantages), which would probably appeal to people who are playing more games, but I certainly learned a bit more about this phone that I hadn't known before. Will be handy to know when people ask me for mid-range phone recommendations! It's great that both these phones have 5 years of security updates from their manufacturers as well, which makes them both great options.

For most of my life I bought phones that did not exceed $130 price. I didn't even have a true mid ranger until 2016. Overall, these mid range devices can do pretty much everything a flagship can do (with the notable exception of high-end gaming), it might just take a fraction of a second longer. If you are not into Mobile gaming or a mobile photography buff, there's really no reason to get a flagship these days.

The reason why I got an A53 over other phones is that it is typically the price point where I buy phones. I had a OnePlus 5t before this, and a OnePlus One before that. I was somewhat still happy with my 5t, but I needed a phone with better antenna and band support as 5G became a thing since I got the phone.
The A53 covers all the checkboxes of what a smartphone does, and it scores between good and great. Two major pluses that make the A53 better than most flagship are band support, and expandable storage. I like to shoot a lot of videos on my phone when I'm not lugging my camera with me, and having a 512GB micro SD in the phone means that I don't have to worry about storage.
Also, it supports Widevine L1. I hate that this is a plus, but many cheap phones that can compete with the A53 from Chinese companies typically have a Level 3 certification. That means you can't stream Netflix in full 1080 on your phone for example.

I went from my A51 to a pixel 7, and I was very happy with that upgrade. The processing power on the pixel is leagues above the 51, and according to geek bench also roughly 1.7x the a53 as well. There are some things that annoy me (lack of sd card, headphone jack, and charger in the box), but considering I got to through my carrier for 5$ more a month than I was paying before I'm very happy with it! It's a toss-up in terms of the apps, there are some I prefer the google version of, some I prefer the Samsung version of, but being able to open apps and they load in literally fractions of the time is worth it. Also with the 6a comparison, the 6a is far better than the a53 in processing power from what I understand.

I'd be a little harsher on the camera, especially at night and with the image stabilisation but it is not bad by any means. There have been a few freezes but not many at all and even my previous Samsung Galaxy S20+ had those after about a year. The face recognition is often poor whilst other times inexplicably it recognises me straight away even when wearing a hat or with facial hair that I don't usually have. The fingerprint scanner trick mentioned is a good one and it works lightning fast most pretty much 100% of the time so I don't even notice the poor facial recognition as my thumb instinctively goes straight to the sensor. Its even funnier when you realize that back then, the Samsung phones were the ones with the poor build quality, even the Samsung flagships were entirely made from plastic back then..
And not to mention that, that specific HTC (M8) had among the best materials and build quality available back then..
but dont read too much into it, it was just a random clip one of his editors put there because he was probably tired after probably a lot of work, so he probably just grabbed a random clip from an old phone

@m0ntus idk if you used it, but the bezel on the m8 is only big by today's standards imo. Plus, those bezels were for the speakers, which were awesome

I got the A53 for $200 with Straight Talk and literally just got the S23 since I switched to TMobile. I liked the size of the A53 compared to the smaller S23. The A53 was a GREAT phone. I really hope I enjoy the S23 just as much.

I have a A71 currently and i was amazed by its battery life, that i may just end up only using midrangers with big batteries. Flagships are nice, but they don't last as long when using them.

I have the A71 as well (been using it for just over 2 years now) and I absolutely love it. I upgraded from the S7.

My Samsung S6 Edge is 5 years now and I bought it used so it's a lot older. Exynos is annoying but flagships do last long. Since mid last year I've bought LG G4, G5 and now I'm using G6. All bought for 30 to $40 from China. 🇨🇳 The G6 was a Verizon unit, G4 Sprint and G5 Korean variant. I only buy used because I enjoy it and I save a ton.
