Every Dec. 1, the world commemorates those who have died from an AIDS-related illness. Known as World AIDS Day, it serves as a reminder that there has been an ongoing pandemic for the past 40 years, pre-dating Covid.
The Covid vaccines were sequenced, developed and approved in the U.S. in record time, but that would not have been possible without decades of work by HIV researchers.
“Almost everybody working on Covid vaccines comes from the HIV world,” said Mitchell Warren, executive director of AVAC, a global advocacy group for HIV prevention. “Moderna had been working on mRNA-based HIV vaccine before SARS-CoV-2 was even known to exist.”
An HIV vaccine has eluded scientists for decades. The traditional thinking around vaccines is to mimic the body’s natural immune response to a virus. The problem with HIV is the body’s natural immune response isn’t strong enough to fight the virus. This means a vaccine has to come at the problem in a different way. Scientists are hopeful that mRNA technology - the same technology used in the Covid vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech - could be a turning point.
Government funding is a crucial component of all vaccine research and development. Within a few months, Operation Warp Speed allocated $10 billion to Covid vaccine research and development. By contrast, between 2000 and 2020, the U.S. government contributed $12 billion toward HIV vaccine research and development. This funding frequently goes to private companies.
“Just about every vaccine that we get today was developed by some private company, even though the actual research and development may have been a shared enterprise,” said Dr. Jeffrey Harris, co-founder of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network.
Public-private partnerships can have serious implications for who turns a profit and who ultimately gets access to the vaccine. Moderna and the National Institutes of Health are currently locked in a legal battle over a key patent for the Moderna Covid vaccine.

It's absolutely infuriating and sad how the US government ignored HIV/AIDS for so long.
Of course, HIV drugs cost about $ 3,000 a month. Multiply that by the number of HIV-positive people and you get the huge figure that the pharma industry earns.

You can get equity in these companies. Buy their stock. Try to have a bit of money saved at the end of the month and invest that money.

With public funds lately contributing to the development of the vaccines, the public should hold a majority of the profits and licenses. The company that actually did develop it should still get profits from the sales as well. But it shouldn't be constrained to be manufactured only in their facility.
This should have been addressed before grants were provided to those companies.
If the public funded the development, the public should therefore receive a massive reduction in the price. Its really scummy that we pay for development and we get no benefit from it at all, quite the opposite actually we paid to create something and then....have to pay to acquire it? Its really absurd.

If Taxpayer money paid for it, its not free. How they word it tricks people into thinking it is free. If the taxpayer already paid, it is not free because a monetary transaction exists.
You dont get charged for the vaccine because the gov't already used your tax dollars to pay for the vaccines. You arent going to get charged twice. LOL

Society's interest is in these treatments being developed. You can negotiate the prices for a bulk order like they did for covid products, but you will not be able to do the same with the threat of withholding r&d funds. Getting treatments that are expensive is a tractable problem, getting treatments that dont actually exists isn't.
If "WE fund it" never happened, I have no idea what percent of treatments would not exists. I'm sure covid treatments would still have been developed as the market is huge. The prices would have been higher and probably out of pocket or insurance based.

1. prep is not an ibuprofen you can't just pop one then go out to the club on a Friday night you have to take the pill every day for up to 10-14 days before it becomes effective then you have to continue taking it everyday for it to stay effective missing a single dose could lead to an infection
2.prep doesn't come without risk there are many side effects that are a cause for alarm such as bone disorders and hepatitis b
3. HIV is a totally different virus from coronavirus until the vaccine is released we'll have no idea how long immunity will last thinking that just because it uses the same technology means that they'll get the same outcome is very assuming and presumptuous
4. Even if the hiv vaccine loses immunity over time I'd rather be vaccinated and have HIV that can never turn to AIDS and my immune system being able to keep it at bay plus with treatment it could lead you to becoming negative again

Tell how "rare" it is to the poor, black, and brown communities who still suffer. HIV for these folks is so much higher than for white or rich people. How about people in developing nations? How many states or cities offer free prep to people who can't afford it or who don't have insurance? Too many people think HIV is not a problem today. Well, It is! HIV mutates but it won't be functional if it mutates too much, therefore there must be a part of it that never changes or only a few variations of that part remain functional. That therefore needs to be the target and the antibodies should be trained in that regard.
All viruses mutate though. But the point is scientists have the actual spike protein of the virus, then they can make a vaccine for it and then from there you can continue further with that. Pretty much what happened with the COVID19 vaccine.

My insurance company ( well my dad's insurance actually) denied my doctor's request to get my PrEP medication covered after being on it for a year. Tobias Starling PhD student Kings College London Biophysics of HIV-1 entry. Basically, HIV-1 is far more complex compared to COVID. We get a new COVID strain roughly every few months. Due to HIVs error and replicate rate, it’s possible for every possible mutation of HIV to exist in a patient within a single day. HIV1 also has an extra layer of complexity known as a glycan shield which is considerably more advanced compared to any other virus.
I was previously at University College London where I was taught by Ravi Gupta who cured the second person of HIV (London patient).
There should be open source mechanism for vaccine and medicine R&D.

What AVAC does have a time frame for this? Like amfAR, which targets the vaccine's cure by the end of 2020, we are at the end of 2021 and have no product yet.

The problem they are describing is called "capitalism". We pay taxes so the government can give corporate welfare while denying the taxpayer access to a doctor. Im unclear on how they can develop an HIV vaccine. HIV mutates and changes so fast and there are countless strains of it. Its possible to be infected by several HIV strains at once. Im not a virologist, but its hard to understand how a single HIV vaccine will make you immune against all strains.
Sing about the MRNA technology as that a vaccine cocktail can be made up to service a bunch of different strains. They can also develop Regional vaccines because if someone is infected with HIV, they can tell you the actual fingerprint of that virus that you have and where you got it from. They'd be able to tell you once you acquire the virus, did you happen to go on a trip to Europe? Because the strain you have is common in Germany, specifically Berlin. It's not impossible
