      Did you know, that artificial banana flavour is actually the flavour of a now extinct banana fruit that came before the one we know now. Because of a type of mold the banana we had before the 60s was tasting like what banana candy tastes like. We risk a similar situation now, as a similar mold is attacking the banana population we have now

    Loved yout video. You are so respectful and enjoy eveything :) I'm from Argentina. Dos Corazones comes with a poem inside, that's the card you find. The candy name literally means: two hearts. It is meant to be given to someone you love and to share. The poem is for the loved person and it comes in two pieces (2 hearts) so that you can eat one square and the loved one the other ^^

    The "cup" that they sent you it's called "Mate" but before you use it you have to "cure" it first. To cure the mate you have to wash it very well and let it dry a few minutes, then put the yerba in it with warm water for a couple of hours or a whole day. After that, change the yerba of the mate and put the straw in the mate this time. Now the final step is put a kettle and warm the water, before it boils remove it from the fire or turn it off (in case that you have an electric one), then pour the water in to the mate and enjoy. If you want put sugar on top of the mate. I hope you like it as much as we do, greetings from argentina

  • @Palewolf
    @Palewolf Před 7 lety +37

    More than a sugar high, you're probably feeling the effects of yerba mate, it has about the same amount of caffeine per portion as an espresso :D
    BTW, if you can't find dulce de leche, you can easily make it at home with either milk + sugar + bicarbonate, or canned swetened condensed milk (which is easier and faster).

    • @TabiEats
      @TabiEats  Před 7 lety +19

      Oh is that right? I thought that mate was herbal with no caffeine. No wonder we were so high! haha.

    • @nadkudo1798
      @nadkudo1798 Před 7 lety +7

      Not really, it has caffeine but not that much. I guess it's confusing since there is no real "portion" :P traditionally you don't steep it like tea so the caffeine gets pretty diluted too.
      Btw, tea also has caffein. Mate would be closer to tea than coffee in that aspect.

    If you are interested on trying mate as we usually drink it. (What you did was a version called mate-cocido or cooked mate? I guess? That is valid and common as well)
    -Filled 3/4 of the mate (that wood like bowl, don't worry about the things lying on the bottom) with yerba mate, with the metal straw already in the mate.
    -Heat water up but don't let it boil, it makes the mate bitter.
    -Pour hot water into the bowl, try not to fill it completely, just up to were the yerba mate reaches.
    -For the love of God, don't stir it with the metal straw. Ever. That's a sin.
    -Drink it through the metal straw, and refill.
    -It is going to taste pretty bitter, specially the first mate, and as you have never had it before, you can add sugar. But don't stir.
    Amazing video, you guys are great, it's always cool to see people interested in different cultures. Keep it up!

    Banana with dulce de leche!!!! is one of my favorite things in this world. You can put dulce de leche in everything. I thinks some people are a little harsh on you guy for not try mate in the "right" way, but you did the second thing with mate that is call "mate cocido" (mate cooked) I drink this way because I don't like the other way and I'm argentina. Mate is good with milk too. AH! mate is not tea, is an infusion. There are a lot of better types of "alfajor" but glad you enjoy the cookie sandwich thing. How do I send you other samples of Argentina snack and food? there are more salty stuff that you are missing that are amazing!. hahahahaha I had SOO much fun seeing you try snacks from my country!! :) The vessel they send you to make the tea is made out of pumkin, you can scrape the inside if you want but it really doesn't matter because you drink mate with that metal straw that doesn't let anything go through it (except for tea of course lol). It seemed like it was made from a metal called Alpaca, it's kind of fancy for mate, but some people also use silver or gold straws called 'bombilla'. Bocadito means 'little snack' like you can eat it in only one or two bites. The Fruit Jellys you are actually kind of expensive, they are called Fruit Bombons and can actually cost more than chocolate bombons. And we do love our Dulce de Leche lol

    Bocadito means "little mouth". Boca is mouth, and "dito" or "ito" (depending on the word) is a diminuitve placed at the end of the noun. It's often used to convey smallness or can be used at the end of a person's name to convey affection. Hope that this answers your question, Shinichi-san and Satoshi-san. Keep up the great work!

Gourd sure can look scary if you've never used them, I sure had my reservations when I first saw one. The way you prepared mate is called "mate cocido" (cooked mate). We have like tea-bags to make it. The taste of standard mate is much stronger, but it must be prepared in a mate with much more yerba. It may be prepared in a little mug, but you must use the "bombilla" tu suck because it must filter the yerba because you have to take only liquid.

  • @camilazarte2312
    @camilazarte2312 Před 7 lety +1

    hahahaha, there's two ways of using yerba mate, the way you did it is called "mate cocido" and it is drunk as tea, and the other way is with the mate and the bombilla (that thing you didn't know how to use), you put the yerba on the mate with the bombilla (fill like a 75% of the mate), put your hand over the top sealing it and you shake it to quit the exess dust, then put hot water and if you want half a tea spoon of sugar (the sugar goes before the water) and just suck the bombilla

    You also said "kinda of herbal", well, Yerba is basically a sinonim to "Hierba" or "Herb".
    EDIT: There are a bunch of video tutorials on how to prepare Mate. And there are a lot of ways to "cure" a gourd. That one looks like it was made from pumpking, that's why it looks the way it does inside.

      I wouldn't give much of a thought to what's inside the gourd (also called mate). Just clean it up with some water (don't use any products) and it'll be good to go. At least that's what we do. You can dry it up with a paper towel or leave it to dry by itself. Spoiler alert, the first mate is always the most bitter one, so be forewarned :D

    The drink Mate is prepared like this, You have to put first the sorbet (in Argentina is called bombilla) into the mate (bowl).Then you putting "yerba" in the "mate"(bowl) almost half of it full of yerba. If you want it sweet you could put some sugar in the yerba or in the water too. Then the water must be hot, but not boiled because you could burn the yerba (I preferd almost boiled but it is too hot for someone that is his first try). And then you put water in the yerba closer to the sorbet. Don't full of water, you have to leave some yerba dry on the top. The firs drink coul be a little bit stronger, but since you are drinking the taste is getting softer. I hope you try again!! Here in Argentina, in some places they put other things like orange shell, lemon shell, or Peperina. You could prepared as you like it :) byee

    Hey guys! If you will drink Union's yerba mate, put sugar on it! its very delicious and it's called "mate cocido"
    The "dos corazones" candy is given for someone who you love (a friend, family, a lover...) and that paper has a love legend.

      Christina Perez Mate is not tea, they made themselves a "Mate Cosido" (Something like saying "Cooked Mate") originally you put the Yerba on the Mate (The wooden thing) with the metal tube inside, then you place water on it. still it's similar to Tea but it gets drank much hotter

    Bocadito is a small piece of food / sweet that you can eat in a mouthful. In English people tend to call them "bites" because they are small pieces / servings.
    Oh, and it's "dool-seh" de leche. :)

    You should add more mate to prepare a cup, that's too light we use a lot more than that, it should be much more darker.

    If you can't get "Dulce di Leche", there is a way to DIY. If there is sweetened condensed milk in a metal can available, get some of those. Set the can into a pot, fill up with water about 3/4 the height of the can and set the heat on somewhat low. The water shouldn't boil much, but slighly simmering and put a lid on. Leave this for about 3-5 hours. The longer you let it in, the darker the milk turns into caramel. Take it out of the water and let it cool down before you open the can! The result should be similar to Dulce di Leche :)

    You can make dulce de leche in a pressure cooker. Place cans of condensed milk, water and cook an hour and 15 min. It's as close to the real thing you can get.

    Surprised you didn't google or search on CZcams how to prepare mate. You ended up making "mate cocido", which is when you use the yerba mate as tea leaves. It is a different experience to drinking proper mate from a gourd.
    The mate gourd is made out of a calabash fruit (very similar to butternut squash), so, although it did look like it had "stuff growing inside", it was just the inside of the calabash that had been carved in to make the mate gourd.
