How Red Bull finally made Helmut Marko apologise to Sergio Perez

  • Sergio Perez deserves better than to have to stomach prejudicial remarks from a senior figure in Red Bull’s F1 operation and maybe now something is finally going to permanently change.
Red Bull finally seems to be willing and able to take action on the way Helmut Marko has repeatedly made discriminatory comments about Perez, which REALLY needs to stop.
Last week Marko questioned Perez’s supposed ‘Mexican mentality’, which was just the latest of many derogatory comments about where Perez comes from in a critical context.
It’s one thing to scrutinise or even criticise Perez as an F1 driver for his performance. It’s quite another to lazily assert that perceived deficiencies exist because he is Mexican.

People trying to make sense of his words forget that when Marko used to actually race he saw nothing but the exhaust of Pedro Rodríguez whom was praised because of his precision driving under wet. So much for an "unfocused culture/country" right?
Never mind that he threw an entire continent under the bus just so casually.
Now imagine if people started to make the same senseless remarks about Marko's country of origin, like, one could say that we are lucky that marko picked up motorsports and not painting because we all know how it turned out last time an austrian got rejected from art school.

    • @JimTheFly
      @JimTheFly Před 8 měsíci +10

At least in Formula 1, Helmut never raced against Pedro. They both competed in the same season (1971), but Pedro raced in only the first 5 races that season and Marko in the last 5. That said, Marko's results were an 11th, a 12th, a 13th, a retirement, and a DNS. Rodriguez's results were 2 retirements, a 9th, a 4th, and a 2nd at Zandvoort to Jacky Ickx.
I don't see any other results involving Marko and Rodriguez, unless it was at Le Mans, where Marko actually was.... kinda good. At least in 2 of his 3 races.
His whole Mexican = South American = Lazy combo is kinda amusing (not even accounting for how it's wrong on multiple levels), especially since in Formula 1, Marko NEVER finished a season in a higher position than ANY South American driver. Not Rodriguez, not EITHER Fittipaldi (and Emerson WON the 1972 championship), not Pace, not Reutemann, NONE.

Thank you for bringing this up and digging deeper than just surface chatter. I remember Checo's comments and wondering if anything was happening and then everything sort of went silent, so its good to hear something being said because it's absolutely ridiculous and leaning towards racism to say because you are X race, you automatically don't do this or that as a driver.
Talking about what a driver does on track is always fair game, but attacking or insinuating something about their race/culture is not. Hamilton spoke about this even as a child in interviews. I am of a firm belief that there are a lot of people at Red Bull who are sick of Marko being able to just say and do whatever because he has no one to answer to because you get situations like this and often the constant never ending contradictions to what the team is ACTUALLY doing or represents. The unfortunate thing is often when you get someone like this in power, they will say something a step much too far, and then what do you do?

The day Helmut was beaten by the legendary Mexican Pedro Rodríguez was May 30, 1971. Pedro defeated Helmut Marko in the 1000 kilometers of Nürburgring.
Pedro Rodríguez competed with J.W. Automotive Engineering team together with Swiss driver Jo Siffert. Meanwhile, Helmut Marko was a driver for the Martini Racing Team alongside the Dutchman Gijs van Lennep.
For that edition, Martini Racing Team competed with another car, crewed by Vic Elford and Gérard Larrousse, who won the competition, and the desire of that team was to finish 1-2 on the podium, however Pedro Rodríguez's car interfered, who closed the race, while Helmut was also in charge of closing for his team.
The Austrian was told to overtake the Mexican, who had a slight advantage, which is why Marko was predicted to pass. However, in the final part of the race, the Mexican defended his position and Helmut had to settle for third place.
Helmut Marko ended up very upset and accused Pedro Rodríguez's maneuvers before the press, since he considered that the Mexican hindered him when he wanted to make the pass that prevented Martini from 1-2.
Helmut Marko and Pedro Rodríguez were “partners” in Formula 1, Pedro Rodríguez died on July 11, 1971, that is, almost a month and a half after that battle with Helmut Marko. That same year, Pedro started the Formula 1 season with the Yardley BRM team and competed in the first five races, in which he scored nine points.
After Pedro's death, the team relied on Helmut Marko to finish the season, so the Austrian went up and competed with the same car as Pedro Rodríguez and yet he could NOT score points.
Despite his death, Pedro finished 10th in the season, while Helmut finished outside the top 20.

I don't get what Red Bull want from their second seat. You've got this generation's Michael Schumacher leading the team. So the idea is to antagonize this generational talent to get someone to come in and compete with him for wins, dividing the garage and creating tension? You're gonna bring in Lando and then what? If you give him a fair shot, you'll probably end up pissing off Verstappen who is nothing if not vengeful, just see Monaco/Brazil last year. If you don't give him a fair shot, what's the point? And if you want a clear second driver who'll bolster Max's pursuit of perfection, how does it get any better than Perez? He's most likely going to be second this year, he helped Max win his first title, he's there to pick up the slack when Max isn't there for whatever reason. Does he challenge Verstappen? No. Would you really, actually want him to? Of course not. It always blows my mind when someone sees this sort of generational driver and goes "you know what this needs? More of that Prost-Senna, Alonso-Hamilton, Hamilton-Rosberg chemistry, yeah, that'll be great for the team!"

It never fails that Marko talks rubbish about Perez week after week. I can only imagine how uncomfortable it must be being Max's teammate and not because you are competing against Max but because of Marko's continuous public criticism. Marko has no filter and tact when giving interviews. Just when Horner has stated that Perez will be driving for them for 2024 as stipulated in his contract, you have good old Marko spitting vile about Perez and how unfortunate it is that Norris has a contract until 2025 because he would be a perfect match with Max in RB. I'm almost never vocal in any of YT videos, but this time i'd like to appreciate what you guys are doing and hope that you keep pushing on this topic, as it's both serious and almost never gets enough media coverage. It feels as if something involving a latin driver always gets minimized downright to just a 'mea culpa', thrown under the rug and ignored until it happens again. We really need concrete actions from the culprits and not a simple hipocritical answer.

Has anyone ever said Raikkonen lost a race because Finns are quiet?? Or that Vettel crashed in the 2018 German GP because he is German? There's a huge difference between saying stereotypes and using them as excuse for bad performance. Neither of them should be said in my opinion, but the latter one has much more prejudice in it.

Since Redbull doesn't isn't in a position to discipline Marko, they can't make a statement saying that Marko's comments don't have any support from the team? What f!@kall logic is this?
The fact that he's not a member means that they should be able to condemn his comments and show support to Checo who has been instrumental in their success over the last few years!

As a fellow Mexican, this is my point of view:
The best way for Checo to react against Marko’s comments is on the track, he can take motivation from this to ensure the second place 🥈 in the Championship
We understand that Checo is currently a Redbull driver and he needs to be very careful on his thoughts and opinions, in this case, he was a gentleman and for him it’s more important to preserve his job
At the same time, as fans, we should express our disagreement against these kind of comments, this should never happen again and it’s clear that no matter where you are from, anyone can be top at any activity regardless of ethnicity or nationality
My question for Redbull, FIA and Formula 1 would be:
Do we really race as one?, is Mexico 🇲🇽 and Latin America part of the one?
If these kind of comments are not acceptable, why did RB took actions against Jüri Vips and not against Marko? I mean, at least say that you have warned Marko about this and it will be the last time and no more tolerated
Thanks 🙏🏼 for the great content, greetings from Mexico 🇲🇽

So I would like to separate this into two. One, Checo’s performance, and two, Marko’s comments. Checo’s performance can indeed be questioned but let’s remember he is the only successful partner Verstapen has ever had and in a sense, gave Max his first championship. Additionally, regardless of criticism, he is still second in the championship. At the end, that is what matters. On Marko’s comments. A serious company would have terminated him immediately.

I can't avoid the feeling that Marko is not really a team player. It seems to me it's Marko first, everything and everyone else never higher than second. I get the same vibes from Yost Verstappen. That seems to be intensifying out of control since the passing of Dietrich Mateschitz. My racing fan friends and I have more than once speculated that Marko leaving the team would be the best thing he could do for them. While Marko may have some good ideas, there is nobody to rein him in now that Dietrich Mateschitzr is no long there.
On top of all that, Checo is very proud of his Mexican Heritage. He brings it up every time he wins. The second place finish at Monza is the first time he didn't. I noticed that and felt sad that he didn't.

Even his follow up explanation and shallow apology (forced by the backlash) suggests he’s standing behind his comments.
