  • Here's a review of The Midland Hotel in Manchester, UK. It's magnificent.
    This is the FIFTH of my reviews of the famous British Transport Hotels.
    Built near the old Manchester Central Station, The Midland Hotel is near St Peter's Square and all Manchester's shops, bars restaurants and night life. It's just had a £14m refurbishment.
    We're staying in a Superior Double room and we'll have a full room tour. We'll also check out the architecture, bar and the full English breakfast.
    But, my experience was marred by a service issue that left me feeling annoyed. Watch to discover the full story of my stay at The Midland Hotel.

    Wow another cracking hotel, love the way it looks modern, warm, welcoming and stunning, plus kept the character of the building. Really nicely done. Service charge in the bar was really cheeky

    Another nice vlog on the Railway Hotel series Roger! I rode a Manchester Tram during my so-called "Manchester Project" and quite enjoyed the short ride over to Manchester Piccadilly!

      Cheers Jett! The tram network is certainly impressive - compared to Edinburgh at least! 😂

    Great video and one of the best in the series to date Roger. From the outside it's a magnificent hotel and as you walk inside the sight of the lobby area is awesome. Yes the rooms have been updated since the Holiday Inn days but, as it was 30+ years ago, I do feel the money was spent on the ground level public areas rather than the accommodation itself. I would still happily stay there again. As an aside ... we (my wife and toddler son) around 1991 drove up there and I found the parking space for my Alfasud Sprint was beneath the exhibition centre across the road. My prized car was safe overnight !

      Thanks Alex, and for sharing your memories as well. Always good to hear your anecdotes. 😀

    Another super vid Roger, your own inimitable style of presentation is very watchable I have to say. It seemed to me like that was a super looking property indeed, a shame about the wet damage on the bedroom ceiling of a superior room I thought and yes very definitely wrong and absurd to be applying service charge in a bar when you are your own waiter! Rip-off Britain! 😀 I don't believe for a moment all the hotels in Manchester do the same like they claimed. My god, the brekkie looked good as well though. I can see why you're saying the Glasgow Central in episode 1 seems to be out front for now, without the issues this place had. It will be great to see if there's one out there that will usurp it and take the lead. 👌 Fascinating story about the Rolls Royce and the meet up of the two men at that site and all that stemmed from there, loved that! Well done man 👍

    Agree with your view on the service charge. That is outrageous.

      Thanks! I hope it doesn’t spread further. We pay enough for things already! 🤔

    Cheers for another awesome episode of this series Roger, but I must admit that service charge is outrageous, especially when you're paying so much to stay there. Nothing to justify it, and they know people will either be too awkward or just not bother to have it removed. Strange policy as it will lose them custom and revenue in the end. Great video though and the Rolls Royce story was interesting, but NO WAY would I sty there now.

    • @RogEdwardsTV
      @RogEdwardsTV  Před 27 dny +3

      Thanks Steve. I said to the customer service lady that I thought the hotel was magnificent but what do you think I’m going to be talking about to friends and family? Such a shame.

    great video !!! I stayed there a few times it the late 70s it was always very grand !! Used to have a brilliant french restaurant in an oval room ,Probably used for something else now ,Yes the service charge is a thing !!!!

    • @RogEdwardsTV
      @RogEdwardsTV  Před 27 dny +1

      Thanks very much! There is a restaurant called The French and from the photo on the website it looks to be an oval room - so it could still be there! 😀

      There are actually 3 other British Transport Hotels that share The Midland Hotel name, and it’s likely to be one of those next. So Derby, Morecambe or Bradford. 😀

    • @RogEdwardsTV
      @RogEdwardsTV  Před 27 dny +3

      The name comes from the railway line, I think. LMS - The London Midland and Scottish Railway. There are 3 other BTHs that share the same name, in Derby, Bradford and Morecombe. Thanks for watching. 😀

    With regards to the drink & service charge, didn't you get a complementary glass of wine when you stopped at both Glasgow & Newcastle ??
    Both far cheaper than Manchester and No Service charge !!! Also mentioned if you had done dome research The Moon under the Water on Deansgate is a Wetherspoons
    It used to be a Cinema but they have kept all the Original features & do not charge for food & drink
    Great video as always & I will be staying in a Superior Double in Newcastle next month.
    Looking forward to it😅😅😅

    As a Mancunian, I am very proud of the City. Do they still have the roof terrace from the early days where they would hold wedding receptions etc? Also, is there still the French Restaurant?

    • @RogEdwardsTV
      @RogEdwardsTV  Před 26 dny +1

      Hello. There is still a restaurant called "The French" in the hotel - the chef is Adam Reid. Not sure about the roof terrace. I didn't see any signs but it may still be there.

    • @heartofoak45
      @heartofoak45 Před 26 dny +1

      Thanks for that. I used to go to 'The French' in the late '60's early '70's. There was a German guy there who was the maitre de. It was superb.

    I'm avoiding that one "SERVICE CHARGE" ??!!!
    Decorator needs to make it smile a bit.
    I wouldn't say it was worth the price... sorry to be a moan on this occasion but Glasgow and Aberdeen were far better and cheaper.
    Looking forward to your next video Roger..... cheers m8😊 RICHARD IN NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE

    Yes Roger every right to be annoyed about that service charge. Room fine, pity about the ceiling damp! The breakfast was definitely on par with Glasgow's(stayed there last w/e). Thanks also for tour around central Manchester, despite the rain. Great trams, seemed to be everywhere(train/tram noise, I don't mind). Finally, you have my taste in red wine! Glasgow hotel still my favourite! Thanks for sharing. 😊 👍

    I must say the inside of the Midland does not impress me much and that damp patch on the ceiling would be a no for me.
    That said it's an amazing city and one I'm lucky enough to call home.

      Thanks for watching. I grew up in Blackpool and used to go to Manchester quite a bit but it’s years since I’ve been. I didn’t plan the trip well enough to make the most of everything that’s appeared in the intervening years. Definitely need to go back soon! 😀

    That service charge Rog, taking the p really. You don’t get that in Wetherspoon mate AND they bring the food/drink to your table 😂. Great video nonetheless 😊👍

    Freshly squeezed orange juice would be 5 pounds or more extra in a hotel like that !!!!!! it takes 3 or 4 oranges for one glass !!!!

  • @pontecarlo4354
    @pontecarlo4354 Před dnem +1

    What lets that hotel down is that there is no parking. For this reason I wouldn’t stay there. The price does put me off as well and the service charge on top is insulting.

  • @graemejenkinson5

    This looked really good until breakfast, even then I was thinking its an OK buffet until a toast machine a bloody toast machine nothing says luxury more then waiting aimlessly in the middle of the restaurant for slightly toasted bread to pass around a conveyor belt . Well maybe it was a toaster but still, pretty much a deal breaker! Some great pubs fairly near by for next time The Pevril of the Peak and The Britons Protection always on my Manchester visit itinerary. And stay away from New York they ask you to tip on self-service checkouts not good for your blood pressure!

    • @RogEdwardsTV
      @RogEdwardsTV  Před 24 dny +1

      Yeah, do you put the bread in and then go and get the rest and go back for it, or just stand a wait? 😊 Thanks for the pub suggestions and thanks for watching!
