    In Canada, you need to develop assertiveness. When you know your rights, put down your feet for that. Some people would deal with customers honestly, but most business people are inclined to take advantage of those who are or seem vulnerable.

      @@BecomingAnnette don't beat yourself up anymore. I meant well when giving my 2 cents in making some suggestions. I feel bad for you as I returned to Canada for sone serious studies after working many years in HK. The switch was really challenging, and it must be more so for you as you never lived here before, so I really feel for you. Spit it out when you are stressed. It helps just by 'bitching' about it.     其實都不是太差丫,如果向好處看,那幾個月租金你給那個租客好過益個業主,而且有機會認識多d人。。。只是要搬多次

    聽見你被欺負的遭遇,心感憤怒!在Canada,法例多保障租客權益,同時租客有好多渠道投訴。最快收效的方法就是向電視台求救。通常, CTV及Global TV都幫到手。希望以後一切順利。

    It is so uneasy to live alone in a foreign country. Once in a while, you will encounter greedy and unfriendly people that could take advantage of you.

    In Canada, the tenancy rules will change with each city and province so it is best to study it. But I know that landlord can't just increase rent whenever they want anywhere in Canada. It always require written notice and a notice period.
    I am in Calgary and the Calgary Reddit page is pretty good for tenancy questions. You might want to join more local chat group in your city so next time you can go on there to ask for advice.

    You can still go back to your agent and tell them what you have learnt and that it seems that you're being taken advantage of or even conned into the current dealing. I know it's a lot of work and it will take time and stress in the process. Alternatively, get a timeline of events done, write to the tenants board and lodge a complaint against the agent. Whatever the outcome, you've done your part to avoid the agent playing such con tricks against other minorities.

    Dont let this negative emotion ruin your days ahead.
    We all learn from our mistakes.
    The saying goes: if money can solve a problem, that is not a problem.
    If you have a car, then, you have much much more flexibility to look for a cheaper place to stay or work.
    Transportation is so important in Canada as well as in the States, other than in NYC.
    Per your description, the second one teaching you driving should be good. But learning to drive in the snow aint easy. Just be careful and watchful.

    可能冇書面通知都會變一千蚊喎。 同埋如果佢而家即刻補返。三個月後要千五蚊,淨返少少時間唔知搬唔搬好仲心煩。So I think moving is not a bad idea afterall.

    Annette, 你已經係好叻, 會找地方搬去避過大幅加租,我感覺你叻過話要三個月通知加租的女孩, 她都是因為有個做地產的父親.
    就你的情況下, 續租是兩個月前, 加租通知是三國月前, 業主祇是將加租推遲一個月而已, 你選擇搬其實除了要麻煩搬屋之外, 你的決定是最有效的

      其實都係 業主最終都有權加租
      而家係搬會煩少少 但至少租係一樣

    唔好咁勞氣,其實大家都無錯只不過喺大家都好似唔喺好熟條條例。對方加租無提前三個月通知而你又無留意層樓唔受租管監管。其實業主加租喺好常見even你去到其它國家一樣會,狂加租香港都比比皆是。加拿大有租管已經算喺咁,而你都叫做平租咗一年啦。所以你其實無乜損失,唔好咁在意一d 生活細節,去到一個新地方自然有唔同挑戰如果下下都唔開心咁去黎都無意思。寬容d, 條條大路通羅馬

    Please make sure you cancel the utilities bills that is under your name for you old room. Have your existing roommates take over the bills.

    IF you have a driver's licence from Hong Kong, you can exchange for a local driver's licence without any written/driving tests. Good luck and thanks for your update.

      Before u come to Canada, you need to get a letter/document from HK to prove you have HK license for how long. Then, take the written test as soon as you arrive Canada. About 3 months you can have the road test, the highway one to get G licence. (I am referring to Ontario)

    你做完第一年其實你自己都有責任去睇清楚租約嘅條例係咪要預早通知業主話你要搬走
    我一路聽就覺得你覺得全世界都係錯嘅只有你一個係啱
    好唔同意你個觀點
    在外國生活唔單止喺加拿大就算你喺香港你去做一個單位所有條例都要看清楚
    好明顯香港同加拿大所有租務政策都唔同唔可以用香港嗰套嚟加拿大用

      我無套香港嗰套過嚟
      本身有心理準備預加租
      但加到 $1500就係唔合理
      我有睇開London租盤價格
      淨係租房+獨廁係London係唔駛$1500
      所以咁先覺得業主加幅不合理
      再加上我簽租約時 London租樓巿場好淡
      學你話齋邊有咁大隻蛤那隨街跳
      減得租就證明當時巿場淡
      所以唔存在租平咗
      以當時巿場嚟睇
      嗰個價錢係合理甚至就算COVID都係高過market rate
      唔可以用今日租金去評當日業主offer嘅價錢
      業主無跟L&T Board守則去加租
      我以最快速度了解業主同租客各自嘅權利
      就係費事自己變咗無聊叫春嘅香港人
      既然業主無跟L&T Board嘅程序加租
      反而我跟足程序早60日通知唔續租
      我錯係邊?
      不過都多謝你以議事論事嘅態度去交流

      @@BecomingAnnette 真係好認同上面留言位人兄既意見, 租間屋自己絕對有責任睇清楚d 條款, 岩既先簽. 我唔明點解你會覺得係人地有問題, 份約base rent又唔係無寫出黎, 自己唔睇就簽反而覺得人地係錯, 依個先係問題. 成件事唔明點解你要甘嬲, 明明係你自己既失誤, 同個topic 伏無關. 應該要反醒一下自己既問題, 簽之前睇清楚合約係基本常識?
