  • Autumn is perhaps my favourite season, the time of apple harvests and berries,
when the leaves change from lush green to all sorts of colours -
mushrooms grow in more abundance than usually.
Some of my favourites are the fairy fly agarics and birch milkcaps.
I find them in a little birch forest close to my home.
Autumn feels like a preparation to go inwards for the coming winter,
picking pumpkins and finding birch polypore bracket fungus slowly eating their way through dying birch trees. Now
the sun lingers in a different way,
low in the branches of the birch trees
the yellow leaves and russula fungus pushing through the rotting leaves. The
oak makes fruit, if not this year maybe next (or another year all together
) and we collect the rowan berries, make rowan jellies, maybe watch them sway in the wind as their leaves curl and turn golden in the sunlight
    like the sycamore and elms,
This season the air feels soggy but embracing-
I like to push my fingers into the
piles of leaves that melt into the ground. Plenty of joy comes from autumn decay.
