In this video, I flip back in my sketchbook to fill a spread of colourful dragons! I mainly used Ohuhu water based markers for the colour, and some tombow fudenosuke brush pens for the lines.

I think most affordable markers don't have super pale colors, especially water based, because they are marketed towards kids and newer artists. It's just my opinion that vibrant colors are more attractive to kids and stuff.

Yeah, that makes sense too! if you're a kid you probably aren't going to go for the barely visible light shades first!

The last ones are my favourite - I love their pose. But all of them are so cute, I adore how you draw dragons! Recently I've gotten really into using polychromos pencil crayons - using them to draw anything and everything really!

    I. LOVE. NEOCOLORS they're buttery smooth even without the water stuff. I've used them a lot over the years, so I can share a few wee tips
    a) if it's a muddy color issue, then choosing the initial color layout is key. (versus layering them like watercolor)
    b) using a glass surface (maybe ceramic but i haven't tried) you can scribble your colors onto it, then add water. Not super efficient usage wise but I've seen others mix colors with them this way
    c) Along the lines of not being able to find light colors - using a water brushpen you can just directly pick the colors off the pastel, it goes down pretty evenly! it's also less pigmented too, if you're specifically looking for those super light shades just to add some shadows

I am also drawing dragons! Will probably be colouring them with Ohuhu's because I just got the Honolulu 320 pack and I LOVE them! I use a canson XL mixed media sketchbook and I also love to use acrylics so the bleed through of the markers doesn't bother me!
Love your art as always!! The way you stylize creatures, both fantastical and real, is my favourite part of your channel!

My current favorite sketchbook is a random one I bought at Joann.I love the way it feels with color pencil and watercolors.

My favorite things to draw is just fan art right now and doing oil painting faces

I'm recently getting back into drawing in my sketchbook! I got myself a 24 set of Maped markers (which I assume are like the crayola water based markers) and yeah. I definitely prefer water based over alcohol based because they don't bleed through the page

I think it depends on the paper- mixed media papers tend to be better. But when I want to add water to the caran dache/ water soluble markers I use the fancy caran dache palette- it has a rough side for picking up the colour from it. At the same time though, its meant to have a messy textured look.

I’ve used both copic and ohuhus profusely, and honestly I so much prefer Ohuhus. They hold so much more ink, and I like their nibs better. Ohuhus actually come in a ton of super light colors you just have to get the right set. The only bonus of copics are that you can buy singulars in stores which is super nice and mainly the reason I do sometimes still reach for them. (Copic does have better desaturated colors tho)

I use watercolour pencils all the time. I have Derwent brand. I also came into possession of a small set of Crayolla which have brilliant pigmentation and brightness but I haven't gotten around to using them in earnest.
Not so good for large washes, just use a brush. But for details, I find pencils much easier than a brush. You can also layer them but you have to wait until the first layer is thoroughly dry. You can also mix colours by overlaying them on the paper and then blend them with a brush. You can create texture by using only a tiny bit of water and half-dissolving them or by overlaying a background layer with dry pencils or ordinary colour pencils.

Re: color ranges, alcohol markers were developed as a design tool, marketed at design professionals, like people who design product packaging and ad art and designs for, like, cars and shoes and clothes and cetera. When you need six ideas for a new chili can label by the 2 o'clock meeting, you want to be able to grab exactly the colors you need and go, which means you're going to buy -- or your company is going to buy for its artists -- the brand that has the widest color range, including a full line of pastels. (Note that their development as a design tool is also why nobody cared that the colors are fugitive. There's no such thing as an archival alcohol marker, and that was okay because nobody cared if that original chili can label design from three years ago is starting to go faded and splotchy.)
Water based markers are for art, but to be frank, they're generally considered to be kiddy-art tools. Look at the way most of them are marketed -- bright! fun! whee! Young kids like bright colors, so that's what the manufacturers generally focus on. Not only do you usually not get fifty pastels, you usually don't get fifty muted earth tones, either; your average 8-year-old thinks those colors are ugly, so the manufacturers don't bother with them. A couple browns, golds, and greys, and you're good to go with kiddy art.

I believe Ohuhu does have a set of pastel markers! I’m not sure how wide the range is or if there are any doubles with your current set but hopefully it lightens your options!

  • @thinkerdreamersketcherspy

The Ohuhu waterbased markers rule! ✌️ But the rubber nib ones were even better (apparently no longer on the market 😫😭).
As for the Neocolor IIs... Personally, I use water with them (and other watersoluble crayons) just to 'extend' or even out/spread the crayon colour. I go over with one pass strategy, so basically I start at one end of the colouring and move through without any overlapping/back and forth. This way there's never mud (or pilled paper).
A couple of mixed media artist who use the Neocolor IIs with water recs:
Sophie McPike (she did a whole series with using them as paint! The Adventures Over Leaves series)
    Katie Moody
Sandi Hester (uses Neocolor Is as well!)
+ anyone I remember to add in the reply... 😅

The way you draw dragons is SO cute oh my goodness. I like that they're more on the furry side than the reptilian side if that makes sense~ My fav also has to be the natural colored ones but that blue one with the brown horns is also a big fav of mine from this batch !!! And I'm glad I'm not the only one who just MMM really loves textures in their art and prefers water-based over alcohol-based. Like I know it technically 'looks better' but I much prefer the mess and splotchiness of things like water-based, (colored) pencils, and ballpoints, things like that :3c !!! Thank you for the soothing vid it was exactly what I needed today ❣🥰✨ (ALSO really loved the birds and how you drew them :'] )
