      Except that Gabbi also knows he does bad stuff and doesn't ever do a single thing against him or even to call him out. She even joins the clique in comforting Max about cheating on his girlfriend. I get feeling she can't really speak out against him but she's not particularly in any higher moral ground than Drea's old friends. Maybe even a lower ground since some of them seem unsure Max really leaked the pics but Gabbi seems very sure. So she never really actually draws the line (or at least without it being kind of hypocritical). I agree with Amanda "consistency be damned" lol but I just don't think it had anything to do with being more against her brother than anyone else

    Here is the only reason im actually GLAD Elanor and Drea never get together, its to prove that a lesbian girl and a straight girl can be friends without romantic intention. Its to break the stigma of all lesbian/bi women hitting on their friends. I am very glad they made this choice. To show that they can cuddle and be real with eachother and it NOT be a romantic thing for the lesbian girl.

    I read online that Camila Mendes announced that Do Revenge would be the last role she was doing as a high schooler, and I'm glad for her that she's taking this step. Not that she can't pull off the role, but at 28, still being stuck in the casting category of teenager must be exhausting in so many different ways, and we all know how rampant the practice of casting people in their late 20's as teens is in Hollywood.

  • @growupanushka
    @growupanushka Před rokem +1702

    I think the reason Austin Abrams was given the "school hottie" role was because those definitions are changing. Genz girls go after men who aren't afraid to show a lil femininity (thus Max painting his nails), who are allies to women and other communities, and who just overall seem woke. And a lot of men pretend to be like that to become popular. That's what his character was about and I loved it.

      I think after her talk with Gabbi, Nora realized she needed to pull something big (either full on kamikaze everything or to get to Max). The whole house situation was most likely a bluff to push Drea to go to the party (plus the car thing for her final revenge), because after the Nosy Nora thing at the party and they have their heart to heart it doesn’t make sense for her to keep going. But when Drea pulls off the broach.. Nora tries to stop her. So unless she wanted the footage of being called “Nosy Nora”, I think the camera broach was one way she was trying to get info on Max while she had her own on her if one of them was ever alone with him.
      I think potentially Nora calling Drea “Revenge Mommy” at the dinner table was a hint along with how friendly she was when they got to the party + the “no dont break the broach” after they clearly stated they dont want to hurt each other may have been hints, but I’m not sure.

    this might be personal taste, but ive watched this movie more in the past week than any other teen movie in my adult life bc honestly i do think do revenge does live up/on the same level as most of the other teen dramedies if not better, certainly i think it will age better in being a pastiche of 80s/90s teen movies while also adhering to a lot of millennial/gen z social standards and music to make it a time capsule of the time of the current age. i also think it gives me lots of but im a cheerleader vibes with the intense pastels in the production and costume design, and also how gay the movie is.
    getting into the plot, drea does say herself that she regrets letting her guard down when she sent the video to max, and at the end you have to assume she felt assured his feeling were real thus why she was so hurt when he betrays her and her perfect life. max also is as popular as he is because nowadays esp in wealthy circles the football jock is less impressive and it is guys like max who tend to be popular, because they have charisma and less about the typical masculine skills (think the scene in 21 jump street when channing tatum is confused why guys like him arent as cool). also i feel like any answer of how does "x get away with that", wealth. this movie is about status and class all these kids are getting away with getting in trouble bc of their class and status, thats why also the stakes are high for drea bc she doesnt have that at least on their level (like everyone at rosehill is super uber dumb money rich) this is also florida, everything is legal in florida. gabbi turns on eleanor for the fact that acting self serving, wanting a birthday party enough to betray drea, gabbi doesnt have the context of drea wanting the dirt on max and so to gabbi eleanor was acting as a double agent in both circles and ultimately chose max to serve her own needs and invalidated drea's fears/feelings of being violated and gabbi being wlw ofc isnt into that.
    also its not really queerbaiting or even ship baiting, eleanor and drea have chemistry for a reason, thats why the twist works bc you can see why nora felt so strongly about the betrayl bc she did like drea when they were kids enough to come out to her also the speech in the car wasnt about carissa at all it was about drea so all those positive descriptions of basically being in love with "carissa" were about drea.

    One slightly pedantic note - the movie _Heathers_ was released in 1988 - it is not a 90s film. It did help set the tone for what was to come, and you are not old like I am, so it's not surprising that you would assume it was!

    can i say, i love the costuming!!!!! not that all of it is typically considered stylish but it is over the top stylized. It reminds me of the clothes in clueless!!!!!!!

    Was literally about go brush my teeth and go to bed but then I saw you reviewed my current obsession! This movie was so unhinged and so fun! I really didn’t like the film that much in the first half - as in, I was having fun and enjoying each aspect of the film on its own, but also the characters were unpleasant and the casual felonies stressed me out, BUT THEN THE TWIST! The twist saved the whole movie for me because once I realized this was a purposeful “girlboss gaslight gatekeep” satire, it felt like there was a story reason for all the parts of the movie that I didn’t like earlier, and it made me like them more.

    Okay one of these movies done in the grand tradition of Revenge of the Nerds. And it's one of those team up revenge fantasy movies.

    Loved the movie, the revenge mommy and the bathtub scene where she's saying I'm a teenage girl, we're psychopaths are tied for my favorite parts of the movie. I also love your review so thank you 💞

    This movie seems so much more delightful than I would've expected!!! 😆 (Also, might be just me, but for some reason totally got "Romy & Michele's High School Reunion" vibes from the car scene at the end! Loved all the nods to stuff in general [and Buffy!!!])

    I thought it was really cool how this movie played the premise of Strangers on a Train straighter than Strangers on a Train did

    As someone in the age group of a teen when all those late 90's movies came out, I adored this as a throwback, but not just a re-imagining of the same thing (like "he's all that") digged it!
