I have a first model that was made in the early 1930s- before high velocity ammunition that was handed down from my grandpa. My dad, uncle and myself all ignorantly shot it with HV ammo and it eventually broke the ejector and some of the other important internals. I recently took it to a gunsmith for repair and asked if it could be converted to HV capable. I was told that those parts were nearly impossible to find and that finding SV parts was going to be hard enough. No mention of price to fix, or timeframe, but I don't care too much as long as it gets fixed. It's an expensive and heartbreaking lesson to learn, but it's my favorite gun and getting it shootable with SV ammo is better than nothing. So accurate and a joy to shoot. If you own a first generation Colt Woodsman be sure to not make the same mistake we made.
The Woodsman is a great pistol. My grandpa collected them and I was given one of them when I turned 18, a 3rd series Match Target 4.5" barrel made in 1953. I've killed squirrels with it and it exceeds in that role, better than my Ruger Mk2 22/45 or Mk3 Standard. I'm hoping to take a rabbit and grouse with it later this year. I really would love to add some more Woodsman variants to my collection too.
This is so cool!
My dad taught me to shoot with his 50s vintage Woodsman.
I taught my daughter to shoot with it.
My granddaughter has it now.
❤️
Same here ...on our farm in Oklahoma .
Is a great little pistola .the jack rabbits in Oklahoma are as big as well fed house cats.
A very nice find, and the sort of thing you can be happy about passing along to your grandkids.
AKA: the Colt .22 Automatic
I enjoyed your review. Good quality production and good information. Keep it up!
The "white" upper part of the original magazine was actually hardened by a dip process.
I've always wondered why. Thanks for the info!
Beautiful pistol! Great overview as always BFP.
BFP always has the best videos on classics and how to... Keep up the great work.
They did not make a 4in pre woodsman. Woodsman yes they did
Nice pistol!! I have a 1941 Colt woodsman 4.5" barrel. Just love the craftsmanship.
I’d love to see a cleaning video. I’ve never seen one torn down.
I had the pleasure of shooting a first gen 1939 Match Target “Bullseye” Woodsman with beautiful wrap around “elephant ears” grips. What a marvelous piece of history and fun pistol to shoot. I was also shooting a Ruger Mark II Target Model. The Woodsman has a better feel with crisp trigger and easier to aim sights. These days, the Browning Buck Mark reminds me of a modernized Woodsman.
Elephant ear grips unless I haven't heard of rabbit ear grips lol. I have a Ruger mark 2 target model and although the trigger its accurate, there's something about an old Woodsman. They point so nice. They have a great feel to them
I meant Elephant Ears. Thanks for noticing
You are right! Fantastic guns...
Friend of mine just got one of these handed down to him from his dad, might have gotten it back in the 70s? Was really nice. He also got a 15-2 Dan Wesson as a hand-me-down as well...super sweet pistol you got man.
I am looking to buy one. Man that is nice
Glad to see some of the younger generation recognizing quality. Check out the old high standard pistols if you get a chance.
As I have already been introduced to the woodsman, the smelt on the handle for the thumb is the best! (don't shoot like a cow boy,but your not 7yrs old or your thumb will suffer.
My Grandpa has a Early 1950's Colt Woodsman. It's still a Really Pistol to shoot,!
Nice old Colt. Mine is from 1917, and it is more accurate than I am. Smooth.
Occasionally you can get lucky, but generally these sell for more than $500, even one as well worn as the one in this video.
FYI the beretta Neo mags fit the woodman. Around $25 each and function 100%
This is solid info. Going to try getting one.
Oh and I’m sorry about asking about the shtf 50 on your channel. I just don’t know if calling them would get some inside information. Love your channel BTW
Felicidades. Muy. Buena. Pistola 🔫
BFP when is Walt gonna get some barrels for the shtf 50 the one with a mag preferably. I went to the Safety Harbor web site and it says out of stock till they get some barrels.
I see what I can find out,
Baby Face P thank you Sir
I have a question where I can get some grips of this model of pistols?
Try Numrich or Old Arms of Idaho
