  • Andor just broke a common, iconic trend that comes with Stormtroopers. Whilst many think that the Empire's troops are just our beloved white plastic helmet guys. It's far from the truth. With most of the Empire's soldiers being the Imperial Army Troopers. And this is how it completely changes that trend. We talk about this and more on today's Star Wars lore video.

The stormtroopers in the books are few and far between until Thrawn starts cloning them. But even then, you only really get 2 to 4 at a time and it always worries the characters. What so many people forget is that Vader wanted Leia and Luke and Han to escape the Death Star so they could fly away in the Falcon which had the homing beacon on it thus leading Tarkin and the Death Star to Rebel base. The Stormtroopers had to be precise in making it look like they were trying to kill them and prevent them from escaping which would have taken great skill. What I like about the Andor / Rogue One storytelling method is that everything is grittier and more realistically portrayed in a manner similar to the Mandalorian, though... Fett has it's own style problems that I won't get into here. We finally get to see the criminal underbelly and disorganized beginnings of the rebellion from an up close and involved perspective. This means we get to see security forces, local militia, criminals, pirates, smugglers, and the titular character in a way that goes beyond window dressing and singular 'guest star' set piece appearances that we have grown, unfortunately, accustomed to in recent star wars cinema. (I personally find a lot of the underworld representation in Book of Fett to be underwhelming and painfully inept, there is a lot of individual character grandstanding and direct banter for comedic effect rather than 'real storytelling', but that is just my opinion.)
I especially like that the show deviates from the poor writing trope that so often causes these shows to instantly substitute storm troopers for literally every form of security or soldier in the empire simply because they are distinct and recognizable as "the brand". Storm troopers are like the Navy Seals, Marines, French Foreign Legion, or Airborne Rangers. They exist as a well equipped, well trained, ground force which supports the Imperial Navy, specifically in space or in contested territory. It is very, very silly to see them as "police" or security forces outside of rather niche scenarios where they are part of a garrison maintained by the Navy or in unsecured ground which is usually contested or part of some military action.
Rogue One uses them on Jedha and it makes sense because there is a victory (as far as I know anything larger or newer wasn't atmosphere capable?) star destroyer overseeing and collecting the final shipment of Kyber. That would be a naval operation, they are in support of a ship, therefor it is not unreasonable to see them securing the cargo and ensuring it is safely delivered.
I can also understand seeing stormtroopers securing a landing zone or spaceport, so long as there is a naval asset nearby which they are serving. But usually they are a 'meme' in films or disney related presentations of the setting, showing up as 'mall cop' level enforcers for the local law or just existing to get blasted while missing all their shots, which really sucks to see them portrayed as a joke all the time.

    • @shadowtrooper3764
      @shadowtrooper3764 Pƙed rokem +2

It was a star destroyer on Jedha, that piece of canon about them not being able to go into the atmosphere was old canon. But yeah, I mostly agree. I don't think it has to strictly be a naval operation for stormtroopers to show up (since they are technically army) but I do like that this show is using them sparingly. I'm glad we're seeing them move away from using them like the common foot soldier, it's nice to have a big piece of media acknowledge that they're supposed to be higher up on the food chain.

Same case here, only the scale is magnified. Simply put, even the Empire couldn't field an army of stormtroopers on every single planet they have. They have thousands of worlds to control! So they have tons of regular conscripted and volunteer army soldiers, and let the better trained and armed stormtroopers deal with the serious stuff. Frankly, stormtroopers are wasted on guard duty.

One can make the argument that the only "Imperial Army" person we saw pre-Disney was General Veers. The troopers in the Death Star detention block are often defined as *Navy* troopers and treated as military police. There's also a strong argument that the two things Stormtroopers are actually good at is terrorising civilians and charging fortified positions. The idea that they are "elite" troops comes from WEG trying to build a hierarchy of antagonists for players, and then from groups like the 501st (understandably) wanting to cosplay as badasses and not fumbling buffoons. But the media rarely shows them as particularly competent - just very, very loyal. Which makes them ideal for enforcing the will of the Emperor, but not neccesarily the best soldiers around.
And actually, writing this post-Season-One-Finale, I'd argue that even there the Stormtroopers aren't "elite soldiers." It doesn't take a lot of skill to gun down a group of mostly unarmed civilians standing in the middle of a road. It *does* take very strong discipline to be willing to do that, though. So even in the more grounded context of Rogue One / Andor, the Stormtroopers owe more to groups like the SA or the Blackshirts or the NKVD than they do to highly skilled military units like the US Rangers.

I think one way to explain stormtroopers is that at first, they were the Elite corps of the Empire. They have better training, better equipment, and better officers than the standard military. But, as the galaxy came to resent and oppose the empire more and more, they transitioned into making more and more units into 'stormtroopers', not keeping up with their training as much. It's similar to how, as the Third Reich started to degrade, more units became "SS" designated, despite many towards the end being made up of conscripts.

And because they had little training facilities, they were pretty rusty.

Stormtroopers have always been elite soldiers. The main problem was the equipment they are given. The E-11 Carbine and the E blaster line were some of the most advanced weapons of that time. The weapons weren't the problem or their skills as a navy. The real problem was the way their armor was manufactured. Similar to the phase II Clone helmet, the visors were very small compared to their predecessors, so operators would have a very hard time aiming due to the lack of ability to see, not the lack of skills.

Bit old but around the time of Andor the Imperial Army was in full swing. It was your duty as a citizen of the Empire to enlist and fight, if not you'd be conscripted. The Stormtrooper Corp were the Marines, acting as Expeditionary units and would compliment the Imperial Army as they assaulted planets and conducted operations. However by the time of Episode 4(ish), the Imperial Army was under HEAVY scrutiny because of the amount of deserters to the Rebels. This all meant the Imperial Army was under a more watchful eye by the ISB. They were always there, but never where the Rebels were currently fighting as it didn't make sense (I guess idk I don't think George thought them out really) to be in those battles. By Episode 5 and 6 the Imperial Army was a fraction of its size as the Stormtrooper corps absorbed them and became a frontline element.

"Specialised soldiers" that couldn't hit a barn door with a banjo.

How people don't understand that stormtroopers are insanely accurate when there isn't any plot armour (so rarely)? Just watch the hall shooting scene when 20 troopers come out of the door one by one while rebels wait for them in positions and at the end 20 rebels die vs 2 stormtroopers. They are elite soldiers, the Galactic Empire is heavily militarized they are properly trained, rebels on the other hand very much resemble fodder having almost no armour and being inaccurate and panicked. But they are "the good guys" so most of the time we see somewhat relevant characters that would never be shot randomly at the start of the movie to end it all for the sake of realism. You want movies to go on and make money.

I thought that was the idea behind the stormtrooper armour to dehumanise them so they could better put fear into the enemies of the empire

Honestly never really got the whole imperial army soldier thing. Stormtroopers always seem to be presented as if there ain’t any other regular soldier units. Like you hardly ever see the imperial army soldiers compared to stormtroopers.

Not the Army, but you do see the black-helmeted Imperial naval troopers in quite a few scenes in the OT.

To be fair in the ot we only see
Iv) a very important battle station/hq
      V) an elite strike force
      Vi) an elite legion
Yet despite this we have the imperial navy troopers in alot of scenes. Not just stormtroopers. My assumption was there was always more of those guys and similar troops. After all why bother with a design like that unless it was cheaper for greater numbers.

@@matthiuskoenig3378 I understand we do see different combat units that are not stormtroopers, but both canon and legends have always made it seem that stormtroopers are the fighting force. Whether it’s video games, comics, movies, shows, stormtroopers are always appearing to be the main infantry unit for the empire. So when it comes down to the imperial army soldiers I’m always thinking, how come we hardly see them?.
