I got mine a few days ago and I actually kind of liked it out of the box, but I loosened it a little bit and added some lunar, I already broke all my pbs on it (including my first sub 1)
And I like it a lot more than my mgc.

The big cube server has been saying the hongs OOTB performance is based on batches. The ones sent to scs are apparently horrid. The cubicle and picubeshop ones are apparently much faster and better performing.

Mine from thecubicle was completely usable out of the box.

fwiw I think I got a bad batch one from TC, but it doesn't even matter because the Gan is infinitely better

Funny enough, I never cleaned out the X-Man Lube when I got mine. I just did a ton of solves (like 1000) and lubed it with Lunar and Weight 5 on the very internal contact points. Seems to be really good for me. I just relubed it today.

I found it interesting that both of you guys say that the Hong is trash out of the box. That's the exact opposite of what a lot of other reviews said. Like: speed cube review said it feels set up out of the box!
What this tells me is that: either the quality control isn't as good as it should be for a flagship cube, or other people's turning styles differ way more than I thought. I don't wanna blame turning styles for this, though, as a good solver should be able to adapt to a cube at least a little bit, so I'm pretty sure it's just certain X-man-5s are trash.

Appreciate the honesty. Got mine on Wednesday and it was not that bad ootb. Still have to break it in but I don't think the Hong will replace my AoChuang.

I've heard its performance ootb varies a lot by batch so you were probably a bit luckier than I was xd

afaik scs received a bad batch of the hong. when i got my hong from taobao, it was actually good ootb, but still, setting it up made it even better. then later when i went to a comp, scs had like a stand there where you can buy cubes, and i tried the hong there and it was absolutely terrible.

There was a bad batch of Hongs and the good batch is way better than other 5x5s but the Gan is also better than even good batch Hongs

It’s trash compared to the Dayan 5x5. I can’t believe more people aren’t talking about it or using it. Dayana’s 5x5 beats them all!!
