  • It's not the board that stops you from planing in the chop!

    Great video! What helped me in these conditions is to keep your backfoot much closer to your front foot when using only the front strap. Only after you are fully planing you put your back foot in the footstrap. This gives a less wider stance but at least keeps your weight more to the front of the board, so you accelerate more and avoid turning into the wind.

      That's a good point! How to easily start planing in both footstraps is still a mystery to me. 🤔 It's really something that you must practice, practice, practice :D

    Just yesterday I decided to go for a bigger sail than usual sessions without seeing your video. While every freestyler enjoying their sessions I was struggling with my own experience. At the end, the depression comes from struggling planing with 89 board and small fin while other boys making really good moves made me take bigger sail and somehow it WORKED. It was the best small board small fin session of my life and finally I started to practice vulcan without thinking about planing. Also, I felt like I had much more control on the sail even though it's bigger. Now I am seeing your video and it's incredible coincidence

    Say 'butt' more often with same cut/edit!😁 Furthermore, for me having my front hand 'underhand grip' (I'm not sure how to explain in English) helps me keep that said front arm more stretched, keeping the mast up more straight and catching much more wind....resulting in more power = planing!

    Bigger sail small board wind drops you will visit neptune. If you play this way be sure of the forecast. Straight your arms. To planning point down wind then start upwind gradually.
    Ps: the great windsurfers are the ones that ride small boards in low wind and just track. I suggest before go out in open sea in a small board learn the low wind waterstart. Good luck nice edit

    Your body has a center of gravity (CG). If the board is slow the CG has to be over the forward Footstraps if its fast the CG is somwewhere between the forward and rear Footstraps. Play with the moving of your CG forward and backwards keepin the sail at a stable angle.

    When overpowered or in really strong winds, I go back strap first. Feather light on the back foot. Hanging from harness lines and boom. Really wide stance for stability and fear of catapulting. And front strap right after planing.

    I have certainly been guilty of using a sail that is too small. I have a fsw 113 lites but 10 cm narrower than my 119 magic ride. I find I can sail it ok but fall off more and in the sea chop it is extremely difficult to uphaul, another downside of too small a sail is water starting also becomes difficult and I have been in a situation of becoming too tired not being able to water start or uphaul.

    Vollkommen richtig dein Fazit. Genügend Druck im Segel gibt Sicherheit, gerade bei schmalen Boards. Lieber 0.5 mehr als zu wenig (so lang man nicht total überpowert ist) 🤙

    What about the current trend of low liter + very wide boards ? I see now 100 liters more wide than old 135/140 liters. I wonder how they deal with chop (I mentioned 100lts as I weight 97k its the small board for me). People around me, say for ex Starboard futura, they fly over the chop so its not a issue at all... well, I have some doubts on this but its the opinions I have.

    • @TillLernt
      @TillLernt  Před 2 lety +1

      For the chop, I imagine that a curved board shape is more important than the board width. But I really lack the experience to say for sure. 🤔 I only ever surfed with 'modern' boards.

    • @iacobp
      @iacobp Před 2 lety

      @@TillLernt Curve is only one part of it. There is also V. Just a little bit makes a lot of difference. But a Futura is mostly flat. But with a good fin, they (like slalom boards) will fly above most moderate chop.

  • @natkingcol909

    It sounds like you struggle when the conditions are marginal. Which is exactly what I'm struggling with. I think if I had a board with a few extra litres it might make the difference. I really struggle getting on the plane at times but as soon as I'm planning I'm fine.
