@@noyes. I mean Yes. The guy who made the video Agrees. What's the problem do ya have? What do ya laugh at? Cocomelon?
Imagine having internet so fast that the bottleneck is the Download Server and not your ISP 😅
You actually just need 200Mbps, which isn't too hard.
Most webservers (specially small companies) only have 100Mbps upload per connection (to also limit their DoS or even DDoS risk).
Even if a lot of them do have 1Gbps uploads, only download-specific servers (like CDN's, and whatnot) have over 1Gbps (like Steam, when Linus downloads at 10Gbps).
AT&T ran fiber in my hood last year and it's great.
$99/mo gets me a symmetrical gigabit which is rad because I work from home now.
@@DiarrheaBubbles in your "hood" 💀🤔
@@bluebird1954 Yeah it's short for neighborhood.
@@conservativestrawman9837 It is a residential connection so my speeds aren't guaranteed. I don't use their router I pass it straight through to my own router.
low end ~700 / 500
typically ~ 900 / 850
If I log into the AT&T modem and run their test it's a little faster but not enough for me to let AT&T manage my LAN.

Anyone remember when the selling point of laptops was all the integrated IO, not how many kg of dongles one had to lug along to make it half-way usable? :)
it's the tradeoff for better-looking, slimmer, laptops 🤷♂️
And now I have one dongle that turns my laptop into a desktop
@@joooseph22 there becomes a point of diminishing returns. They could make it thinner by using one of those keyboard like the num pad on a gas station pump has, but that's obviously not worth it. They can keep all the IO, and still have thin computers. And the people who cares about having "a bEtTeR LoOkiNg LaPtOp" can buy an Apple, and an Apple dongle... which negates all of the progress making it thin, but puts another $150 in Apple's pocket.
@@xenonram True, which is why I don't have a mac and my semi-gaming laptop is still somewhat thin (with sufficient IO) by today's standard so I'm happy :)
To be fair, most of people don’t need half of that paraphernalia ever, let alone everyday. I have never needed cabled internet on my laptop, be it at work or for leisure, and used external displays only on armed monitors or presentations, which had the dongles on them, rather than the other way around.
I am investing now on many cables and Bluetooth peripherals just so I can use my laptop with the lid closed. At that point, it is just a portable desktop with low power consumption.
I like the part where Linus says "Dongle".
it's actually an anagram for a bad 2011 9gag rage comic.

the fact that he doesn't like companies making dongles a thing, doesn't mean he can't review one, if anything, exactly because It's not in his hand whether to use a dongle or not when a laptop has 1 port total, means he has to test many to see what to use as companies dont really give you the choice.

That Tuff Nano is a great source of 1tb kioxia m.2 2230 drives. I needed more storage in my Surface and didn't want to rely on external.
just 30 seconds in, and I can already tell the word "dongle" is gonna be semantically satiated enough for it to lose all meaning.
Dell D600 has dual DisplayPort and can confirm can run dual 4K monitors at 60Hz (at least on PC) and this works via USB-C no Thunderbolt required. Caldigit also has a USB-C Pro dock that can do dual 4K 60 Hz on macs or PCs with 4 lane Thunderbolt 3. If its a 2 lane Thunderbolt 3 it will do dual 4K at 30 Hz.
That's the biggest dongle I've ever seen, and let me tell you, I've seen my fair share of huge dongles.
I have 3 of those TS3+ hubs here at home for my Macs. And the 10Gig adapter. It all works super well. The only down side is how HOT!!! they get, which is why both the hub and the network adapter shaped the way they are.
Since Thunderbolt 3 is 40 GBit/s, they could make a 40GbE "Dongle" with a QSFP+ port, but that would probably be even more niche than the 10GbE Dongle. ;)
Linus: here are the advertised capabilities of this dongle.
Also Linus: I'm going to immediately try something it's not advertised for.
0:21 imagine someone hearing this with out seeing what the video is about
I use the TS3 Plus too for about a year now. Also totally love it. It's hooked up to my MBP 16" with ethernet, DP, some USB stuff like a keyboard and a external HDD connected through USB-C. Totally awesome device from CalDigit, works right out of the box and never had any issues so far. Selling my MBP at the moment and will hook it up to the new Mac mini which is coming next week :P.
For my gaming PC I don't need a hub like this, I chose a motherboard with plenty of connectivity, specially selected one with 10 GB/s USB-C for my Oculus Quest2 to play FS2020 in VR :P (which is totally incredible, try it guys!)
I love Linus' huge dongle. I'm glad he showed it to us.
😄😄😄😄😄😄😄
The dock is likely using the DisplayPort Over USB-C protocol; that is what most USB-C docks use to prevent sharing bandwidth with the other ports on the dock.
8:00 Linus: "optical audio, what?"
HiFi nerds: 😡
it is outdated, so he is right, for digital signal transfer you have usb/thunderbolt, optical audio is bandwidth capped.
@@Chipsaru Get put of here with your logic and reasoning. I'm just a weirdo who has his computer hooked up to an AV receiver from 2003
@@Chipsaru So what's the new way to get Dolby 5.1 from my HTPC to my Onkyo 5.1.2 receiver?
@@johnsonger4613 throw it away and get a new one (e.g. TX-NR696, it has hdmi pass-through and usb input), also it will support a wide array of audio codecs that your current onkyo would not over optical audio.
@@Chipsaru I have the 757. You're telling me to downgrade to an older model to avoid using an older port? I didn't know graphics cards had audio processors for their HDMI out; mine doesn't. I don't want a wide array of codecs anyway, especially if it's so exotic it couldn't be transmitted with light.
I have used the TS3Plus at work to drive 2 external monitors off my LG Gram 17 for several months. Works like a champ I get single cable connectivity, I run Ethernet, Audio, and 2x Dell 24" 1920x1200 displays. I did notice that a couple of the 5gbs usb ports share lanes with the displays so I get mouse chatter unless I pick the right port for the mouse. Works so well for me I have outfitted several other people here with similar setups. Running Elementary OS if anyone cares, recently switched to the Gram from a 16" MBP because Catalina sucks so bad for power users.
Linus: My dongle is huge
Yvonne: Boy, you nasty
Optical audio is essential to my setup. Speaker system and headphone amp both have optical or stereo input. Speaker system is 7.1 capable as are the headphones with the right input. Optical distribution to these systems give optimum cable management - of which I know you are aware.
Me : looks at the title
Also me : *feels depressed*
You're beautiful just the way you are.
I really like, the second one you checked out, the USB type C one. Kind of disappointed it didn't have a CF port, but I'm using SD cards at the moment anyway. And all the other features are awesome.
Linus: “ever computer but very budget will have a type C”
Me and my $2K US desktop with only usb 3.1’s
I love my TS3 plus. I literally use every single port (except optical audio). Two monitors, a mike, external drive, webcam, mouse, keyboard, headphones, speakers, and a phone charger.
*linus gets out his dongle from underneath the table*
Imagine pairing this with Corning's optical Thunderbolt cable.
When the notification popped up on my screen i spat out my drink 😂
Best part 8:10 hahaha when theres a line going through the video
how are the display outputs not share any lanes with the usb when you actually say that this is only usb. How to you get a video out of a device that only is connected via usb????
And how so you adapt a "usb C to displayPort"??? since when can usb carry picture??
The extra lanes for the Alt Mode DP is using.
I have the TS3+ and it kicks ass. I use it to dock my 16 inch MBP for displays and ethernet.
Now Linus, we did not know you were this open but I’m not complaining
Hey! I've seen a lot of usb-c/tb3 docks' network ports freaking out when the power is plugged in but no computer is connected and take down the whole home network. Can you experiment on this issue?
If this wasn't scripted, Linus would have dropped his "Dongle" on the floor! Love ya Linus, you took a dream and made it real, and we all benefited!
the last one is quite cool but it really should have a internal psu, power bricks are such a pain
"You can tell a lot about a company by how fast their downloads are"
I guess this makes ASUS the worst company ever?
Because even thinking about grabbing a new BIOS from their website takes 5min... 😂
Maybe their server is just shit where you're downloading from? I know stuff like that will vary depending on how many servers the company has and in what location, as well as how good the connection is at that specific location...
I have one of the large CalDigit "Dongles", but I wish it had multiple display ports on the back. Would make life a bit easier. Aside from that, it's freaking sweet!
8:09 another useless comment that points out artifact on the screen
Oh you Big Dongle

Ts3Plus actually cost as much as Dell WD19DC with dual TB3 connection. This puppy has 2x130W power delivery (Dell's proprietary), so it will power my Precision 7750 without triggering throttling (serving less than 210W of power to 7750 causes it to throttle).
But TS3 Plus's 5x USB-A is a treat! I'd really like that, as I actually need:
1x DP for external monitor
1xHDMI
4x USB (for 3D scanner)
2xUSB (Unifying and 3D connexion dongles)
1xUSB/USB-C for my portable drive
aaaand I need to daisy chain USB hubs to do that :(
It’s always the skinny guys that carry a huge “dongle”
The use of dongle in this video is amazing
I'm not even interested in the device. Just "came" here for the comments.
I almost bought the Caldigit but did not want to waste the money on a work around for the low number of ports for the M1. Instead, I got the Samsung CJ791 Thunderbolt 3 Monitor and it virtually eliminates the need for a docking station at all.

Slow charging notification even though you use original charger means that the protocol handshake has not been established.
In other words it might even charge at half of the rate even if you don't have anything else plugged to the hub.
Not good.
Free advice for all dongle makers: Put some ports on the top of the dongle, trying to insert a SD card or a usb drive side ways is so not ergonomic. Docking it from the top allows me to not have to use two hands while inserting it.
The Caldigit is my choice also. My only complaint is it powers my monitor and mic at inappropriate times. Like during the night.
Some kind of export glitch at 8:09
Great vid i might buy one👍
I have two TS-3 Plus docks. They work great. The only criticism I have is you cannot update the firmware for the dock using a windows PC.
Your videos are splendid! Thank you for giving me a new perspective to contemplate!
0:22 Linus: Give me just a sec, I just wanna show you my Dongle... 😂😂😂
Linus: My dongle is h u g e
Linus's actual dongle size: *ight imma head out*
Probably a dumb question, but say you plugged two high-speed 10gbit SSD's into one of these docks, and started a large file transfer between them. Is the dock smart enough to send the data directly from one SSD to the other? Or is the data sent from one ssd, to the hub, to the laptop, BACK to the hub, to the other ssd?
Linus: Let me show you my dongle
*Robocop: Drop your dongle or there will be .... trouble*
The title burst me into laughter, Lie-nus 😂🤣
This whole video is just dongle jokes and puns, and I love it.
Been using their products for years. Always been happy
I use every single port on my TS3, actually had to use an extra port from my laptop to power all of my stuff. Pretty sure one of my usb ports don't work because when I power my laptop on sometimes, it doesn't give power. Randomly after unplugging and plugging it back in a few times it might power back on. Wonder if its just a limitation of TB3
In the next episode of "That's What She Said"..... Dongle humor.

I've had the TS3+ for a couple of years now and oh boy am I happy with it. Best investment for my home office ever.
I recently bought the USB-C Pro Dock from them, and it is excellent. I would highly recommend CalDigit.

as someone whos about to make the jump from a thin and light gaming laptop(gigabyte aero 14, 2018) back to an ultrabook(integrated graphics are just nuts all of a sudden) all in the name of saving 3 lbs and a bit of space in my bag, i love this video. id 100% buy one of those xps 13s if they offered the 1185 in a 2 in 1. but as of now the lenovo 9i is the one im picking. ofc waiting till CES to make my final decision or decide to wait a bit longer. really gonna be watching amd as i dont think i care about thunderbolt and the 5800u is looking like it could be very good.
