AI Apocalypse Ahead: OpenAI Shuts Down Safety Team! (AGI Risk Team Breaks Up)

  • OpenAI has disbanded its Long-Term AI Risk Team, responsible for addressing the existential dangers of AI. The disbanding follows several high-profile departures, including co-founder Ilya Sutskever, and raises concerns about the company's focus on AI safety. This shake-up comes amid criticism that OpenAI is prioritizing product development over the crucial task of ensuring advanced AI systems remain under human control and aligned with human values.

    Controlling something smarter than us? It's like saying chickens should control the farmer. Well, so far, the chickens haven't managed! Let's hope we are luckier.

      Correct. An immortal entity a million times smarter than anyone on the planet, able to react orders of magnitudes faster than us, connected to everyone and everything, you cannot stop nor control. We can't even deliver safety using massive resources and effort to keep a determined hacker out of million dollar servers, just because he knows a bit more than the rest of us and is slightly smarter. I suggest reading "Our Final Invention" by James Barrat and "Scary Smart" by Mo Gawdat (...who states the dangers correctly but goes hippie-style at the end of the book and suggest we teach love to our " superintelligent kids"... *Cough* 😒)

    God forbid the actual explanation is that they realized that an over engineered auto-complete neural-net doesn't require an "AGI" safety team. LLM may, at best, replace secretaries and call-center employees. But, that wouldn't bring as many clicks.

    • @wdmeister
      @wdmeister Před 23 dny +1

      Yeah. Since GPT3.5 there is not much improvement in the "intelligence" department. Sure GPT has better capabilities it is smarter but intelligence stayed almost the same.

    • @anarkisgaming
      @anarkisgaming Před 23 dny +2

      @@wdmeister As a raw measurement, yeah, that technology can only go so far. Intelligence doesn't scale with the models' size and datasets (which we've run out of anyway). OpenAI's estimated 600B-parameters model scores barely a few points above recent open-weight 70B-parameters ones you could run on enthusiast hardware. It's not a scalable technology for AGI. It's still cool underlying tech used in many fields (and has been for decades) like advanced biology (see alpha fold), image/text recognition, and so on.
      It's also kinda sad that so many medias are doing this. I mean i get it, easy clicks from tech-illiterate people. Fear sells. When a proper AGI-type technology is finally discovered (if ever), the inevitable fallout from the current hysteria may cause people to dismiss it.

      @flickwtchr your comment was yeeted by youtube. Please, for your own good, actually try understanding what a computer based neural-net is. Then understand that things like ChatGPT are just one of the thousands of possible uses for the actual technology behind it. Those things are not sentient, and never will be.
      I'm no fan of OpenAI, i despise the company actually. But, at least, my reasons are related to what they actually do. You should try it :)

    Just like how we should have started bold action on combating Climate Change in the 1990s.

      Fear is a powerful weapon of mass control. Doomers and AI safety are using very well to push for such reactions we’re seeing all over the internet regarding OpenAI.
      Why are we creating AGI in the first place? Why create something already more intelligent than many without knowing how to control it except by pulling the electric cable!
      Since the advent of ChatGPT, the AI industry have been lying to people and everybody buy it, why? Because people are first looking at how much profits they can make with the technology.

  • @jim7060
    @jim7060 Před 22 dny +1

    AI safety is a crucial issue that needs more attention. Here are some potential problems that could arise if AI safety isn't prioritized:
    1. Bias and discrimination: AI systems can perpetuate and even amplify existing biases present in the data they are trained on, leading to unfair outcomes in areas like hiring, lending, or criminal justice.
    2. Job displacement: As AI becomes more advanced, it could automate a wide range of jobs, leading to widespread job loss and economic disruption.
    3. Misinformation and manipulation: AI can generate realistic text, images, and videos, which could be used to spread misinformation or manipulate public opinion.
    4. Loss of human control: If AI systems become too complex, we may lose our ability to understand or control their decision-making processes, leading to unpredictable and potentially dangerous outcomes.
    5. Weaponization: AI could be used for malicious purposes, such as autonomous weapons or cyberattacks, posing a significant threat to global security.
    These are just a few examples, and the potential risks are numerous. It's essential that companies, governments, and researchers prioritize AI safety and develop strategies to mitigate these risks as AI technology advances.

    Security concerns, cute.
    What concerns? the concerns of the US ?
    Anyone thinks that ru or china has such concerns ? Taliban have security issues ?
    What about Security in a-sozial networks, and desktop computers which have no ai at all ?
    Any security measure can be shipped around, hackers show that every day. What makes one think ai couldn't do that in less time.
    Security is just another hype that just doesn't work.
    Some software/os is shipped with backdoors, so the nsa can have fun reading your "encrypted "e-mails".
    You can have 10+ riffles at home t0 "protect your family", does it protect you from being robbed on the street ?
    The real fear is, that we could be no more the number 1 of intelligence on this planet.
    Why are we so sure that we are now? Fighting/killing each other for colorful papers.
