With regard to my request at the end - there have been lots of suggestions of ‘you could do something I suppose with a Raspberry Pi’ also many have sent me the results of their google search - that’s something I’ve already tried over the years. A search of what exists already brings up expensive devices from Critter & Guitari (all their analog devices are discontinued) - they just do HDMI now and their range wasn’t exactly what I was looking for. A search also brings up some old abandoned projects. One of the Patrons to the channel is trying to build one of these now so it will be interesting to see how that goes. There have been a few people mentioning £800 video performance devices - No. I’m thinking £50ish (that seems plenty - given the current cost of Pi type power) - I’m not looking public performance, no knob twiddling or button pushing to change the output. I’d want something that you’d just turn on and it would cycle through it’s display modes.
So just to recap the idea - I mentioned the Atari Video music as it’s a consumer device that takes audio in and outputs video. However it’s not perfect it’s 40-odd years old and I already own one - that was just a base point to explain the concept of the idea. Imagine today’s cheap compact computing power being put to the same purpose. Imagine a box that can take in audio and output a Milkdrop style visualiser. You’ll see lots of people mentioning old consoles too - those get their audio from their built in CD player, they are also large and require wall power.
So summary.. 2019 low power cheap tech in a box - audio in - video out - proper visualiser, like Milkdrop or ITunes Visualiser not just some glitchy random nonsense - when it’s on its on and working straight away. No keyboard, configuration, messing about with settings - a Visualiser in a box.
Yes it doesn’t exist and that’s why I suggested it. You won’t find this with a google search - it wasn’t a request for someone to do google search for me - it was a suggestion of an idea for anyone with time on their hands to explore. I’m not a techy - loads of people out there are and there’s probably one who’s sat on their hands not knowing what project to start work on next and perhaps this will be the idea that sparks something.

Techmoan: “You are not a clown. You are the entire circus.”
Though the music is called "Entrance/Entry of the Gladiators."
llolollollll
@@subduedreader5627 Weren't those the original circuses though? Amphitheaters where they kept the gladiator fights?
@@TheAzynder According to Wikipedia, yes, which is something I didn't know before.
The amount of inventing and engineering that humans have devoted to producing and listening to music shows just how important it is to us.

@ungratefulmetalpansy That's a reach

Nice video Mat. Legendary response to the 'copyright strike'.
I nearly woke up my roomates laughing at the audio substitution. Note to indie musicians - don't let this happen to you. Everyone should put funfair midi over copyright strike music - it's not only a good meme - but it'll drive the stick-up-the-arse musicians and publishers nuts.
@techmoan excellent use of Entrance of the Gladiators. 🤣
Absolutely legendary
Agreed, I died laughing, hahahahahaha
🤡
Great video! Thanks for featuring and reviewing Technoptimistic! Regarding the copyright claim - just to clarify: I am very sorry, but I did not generate this claim myself / manually. These are getting generated by the Content-ID bots of my digital music distributor and as it is an automated process there is unfortunately no way for me to manualy 'prevent' these claims. Anyway: I really love Techmoan's channel and would never ever myself do a copyright claim! The replacement music is fun though. Go here for the original song in full lenght: czcams.com/video/2wPhqlB9_2w/video.html
_Eine Demokratic, Robo Knife_ and (esp) _When You're Down_ reminded me sooo much of playing Road Rash, nice one!
Red Eyes sounds dope!
If Matt disputed the claim for _Red Eyes,_ would it end up in front of you to permit it?
@@Noxedwin Unfortunately I can't 'permit' or 'prevent' claims manually. It is fully automated and I do not have control over this...

I think it has potential to hit the tippy top the Billboard charts!
Thanks! OK, let's make Robo Knife #1 Billboard. At least #1 Dance. :)
The segment at 8:48 alone earned my upvote.
8:48 made me laugh a little. trying to show how CZcams really is lmfao
Ahhh, Techmoan is finally covering chiptunes and demos. It was only a matter of time...
Slowly but surely turning into "The 8-Bit Guy" ;D
The blurriness as you're showing the Remute cart as actually a bit apropos of the subject matter :) Kind of gives it that long lost VHS feel.
how u comment 1 day ago while video uploaded 10 minutes ago :o
@@musamagn Patreon supporters see videos early
Also it would be kinda unfair to ask him to switch to the newer Genesis Analog HD system just so he could get a sharper image. As much as I love grisp imagery, those things are expensive.
VHS cassette tapes in my opinion do have a distinctive nostalgic look, especially as they are played quite a few times, gathered dust, copied over in LP/EP mode, etc. for me _personally_ not because it was the very best technology available at the time, but because it's how I watched home movies and recorded little home videos. Also, technically, 2 x VHS VCRs = tape to tape ;-)
@@musamagn It's because the video was uploaded earlier and was taken down and brought back.
That C64 cartridge is literally the term "cool" turned into a product.
4:40 looks and sounds like something you'd find on Warp Records. Awesome.
RDJ might of made something like this and didnt release it lmao
sounds like team doyobi
I love the design of the C64 cartridge. It's so cool!
I've been seeing a lot of 3D-printed after market cartridges lately, but yeah, the plexiglass cart has a nice "third party cart" feel to it.
Indeed it's cool. And as far as the contents, it should be appreciated for what it is, an avant garde piece of art. ;)
Solid design and the reset button is smooth. Not an annoying clicky button.
That Dub CRT cartridge really illustrates how far technology has come since the now extremely primitive 8 bit days. The Remute sounds very 80s.
I'd say the correct title would've been music on ROM Cartridges
ROMusic?
But then far fewer people would know what it meant.
demoscene related stuff entering techmoan...love it!!!
ikr!
Yeah, made me think of computer shops circa 1995 and being introduced to the C64 demoscene.
4:18 was straight fire!! I had to rewind it like 5 times lmao love your vids
I really like this one, but i didn't found it on the artist webpage =(
That was a Fucik'n nice way to handle the copyright issue.
I once played a wind up music box and that got detected. I also got warned for playing something on a guitar for more than 10 seconds.
The C64 cart reminds me of AUTECHRE , the raw sounds and so on
Yeah, that's why I love it. Properly out there.
Autechre is precisely what I was thinking too.
Also a bit of Mouse On Mars there.
Man of culture.

9:12 Techmoan you cheeki sneeky XD
Raspberry Pi Zero has a couple pin pads that you can easily solder two wires for Composite video output.
This is commonly used to give it an RCA video plug.
Mod the CRT to skip the RF demodulator unit and go directly Composite input for better signal quality.
The video for "red eyes" is one of the most impressive things I've ever seen running on a Mega Drive/Genesis. It's interesting to compare it to something else attempting poligonal graphics on the system like Hard Drivin', there's like a 40 fps difference. I'd love to see more on how it was made!
We wrote about the production on Hackaday! hackaday.com/2019/03/27/full-motion-video-and-3d-graphics-make-this-genesis-demo-pop/
Remute Wow, this is very interesting so far, thanks for doing this write-up and for the reply!

Thank you so much for the great coverage of dubCRT! There will be a second version sometime next year :) Just for the record it should be used on an 8580 SID which is not in an sx64 :) The project set out to do something new with old hardware and am so glad if people at the very least find it interesting! 4mat’s code is generating the visuals directly from sid data in channel 3 of the sid chip, and there are some hidden sections that can be accessed easily from the version that is downloadable on csdb. More info here datadoor.net/blog/2017/11/26/%e2%8c%8adubcrt%e2%8c%89/
Is the 8580 SID the one that is in the C64C with the small mainboard version?
Record scratch plus a screenshot of a content match message is a pretty good summary of current CZcams. Overactive bots is why we can't have nice things.
I love how the dubCRT cartridge is transparent-I love see-through plastic on electronics. Wish it'd make a comeback now that nineties nostalgia is popular.
9:12 - Megadrive WipeOut! I mean it looks like one of the FEISAR racers from the games!
It does look like team Feiser's AG(anti gravity) racer.

The Dub CRT reminds me of Halt and Catch Fire, and it seems like great background entertainment for parties for weirdos.
I never thought when I bought my C-64 some 37 years ago, that today I'm still discovering new content for it!
Some of those Remute tracks reminded me a lot of the old Adlib Jukebox program from back in the day. Good stuff.
You could Cover 8-Bit Music Power too. They're Nintendo NES/Famicom albums.

This stuff is awesome! Thanks for the demos Techmoan
I was looking up the Atari Jaguar, since I remembered the Virtual Light Machine that did music visualization for CDs, and was reminded that it was written by Jeff Minter, and then looked him up to refresh my memory to see that he wrote a more modern visualizer called Neon that's built into the Xbox 360. The stuff you stumble upon when you're down the rabbit hole . . .
Someone give this guy a prize for he is a genius... :D

That Dub CRT is precisely my cup of tea.
Although, I dont have the hardware required. 🤔
That's funny! I have the equipment but it isn't my cup of tea :/
Yeah, PAL Commodore 64 only and 65£ too, that's a tiny market. I would buy it but I can't afford that and will never have a PAL c64.
It is my cup of tea too! Besides the bass, jeeze the squared off wavform sounds just a little too nasty!
@@MaxUgly It's actually meant to be played on a newer c64. His c64 has the old sound chip, so sounds a lot more squishy

DUB CRT isn't...intentional enough for me. Technooptimistic seems to be a bit more my speed though, nice straightforward chip tunes.
DubCRT makes me imagine something The Designers Republic might produce if they were transported back in time. Also, it made me want to watch Autechre's Gantz Graf again...
What a fantastic Monday treat, Love a TechMoan video. Thank You Mat
Your videos have become my new rabbit-hole
Much love for the choice of Julis Fučík's _Entrance of the Gladiators_ - much better known today for its association with circus clowns - as your replacement music! ❤
Same. I started laughing at my desk.
Techmoan:
The original Sony PlayStation did visual effects when an audio cd was played on it. Using the arrow buttons on the controller would change the pattern and speed.
demo one the greatest demo disc of all time
Not all versions of the original playstation did this. The launch edition did not to my knowledge (my version did not and was an earlier version than my friend's, so I'm making this assumption).
Also, fyi for techmoan, the so called "PS One" was actually a very different second version of the first playstation, visually obviously different, made much smaller, and with different styling. I'm pretty certain that version had the music visualizer.
4:34 Dayum. That track bops hard
Awesome to see you cover Remutes cart! The man sure has put out some cool items over the years :)
Now if only someone would make reasonably-priced replicas of the Commodore 64...
your looking at the future of the music album. an interactive experience that the artists will let fan's re-mix or swim in an immersive music album art experience. the artist is still in control of the content , stereo music has 2 channels, but what if the artist gave you 8 channels to play with, this is beyond just 8 bit carts but any interactive experience that is more then just 2 channels of audio or linear video
The first one sounds like the sort of stuff you'd hear on John Peel show back in the day. Peely seemed to love all that really obscure stuff.
Hello Techmoan, there is a technology you are looking for at the end of this video. It is a software called VSXu Visualizer. I did exactly what you wanted to do with it with a bunch of CRT TVs (3 - 15 TVs!) hooked up to a Composite splitter, all showing the same music-reactive image from the PC. We put the program in the autostart folder, so it started with the computer. And you can set a computer to boot when it gets power in the bios settings. About the size, we ran the software on an old Core2 Quad, so you should find a more modern small form factor pc capable of doing the job. I hope this helps, cheers!
I like that DubCRT stuff. I'll get it on Bandcamp fo sho.
Check out goto80
"make do" with a multi mega :) that put a smile on my face.
I also have a DubCRT. It's one of the most unique tech/gaming items i have ever seen. So rad. Also, i love your videos.
Funky format for audio. Well 8 bit audio. Always love your work.
Look into this claim by Believe Music. Remute released this on their own. And looking up Believe music brings up questionable practices of claiming what's not theirs.
Raspberry pi with built-in composite output and rf modulator box for n64 could be used for that rf visualization
ボロ from EU Yep. Though someone would have to customize a disk image to run the visualization straight on boot. More importantly, proper stereo _input_ at > 40ksps is needed, which might not be included on all boards, thus alternative brands might be needed.
I was thinking the same. There are plenty of software visualizers that can be used. Pi doesn't have audio inputs, though. But, there are many expansion boards available that does.
Couldn't you “just” use a USB audio input?
The mandatory "you could use a raspberry pie for that" comment never fails to show up. Lol
@@hikari_no_yume Yes, a USB soundcard is an option too. I think the expansion boards are cheaper, though. It also depends on what you want to do with this device. Should the sound pass through it, or is that uneccessary? By not doing any passthrough, you won't have to worry about reducing sound quality.
That DUB CRT was absolutely excellent stuff!
Always interesting. Some of the things you reviewed like the triple deck tape deck take me back to my childhood thank you .
It's all Industrial & the music on dub CRT sounds like Nine Inch Nails. Any Goth would be blessed to have these cartridges.
"I don't have a Model 1 MegaDrive so I had to use a Multi Mega instead"
I'd be happy to swap you a Model 1 MegaDrive for a Multi Mega 😉
Using a non Model 1 to showcase chiptune music is like using a Fisher Price boombox to listen to CDs.
@@DeAthWaGer I know but it's the way he just casually has an SX64 and a Multi Mega in the same video...
the Multi Mega has good audio quality though
@@DeAthWaGer 😑
(11:10) I've been looking for either a device similar to a multitap or a cartridge passthrough, that allows the U.S. Sega Mega Mouse to work with any D-Pad game. For instance, 688 Attack Sub or Dune II are games that would benefit from mouse controls. The Mega Mouse currently only works with cartridges designed for mouse input.
A cartridge for an old 8/16-bit console or home computer like the C64 that takes audio input and visualizes the sound for a CRT is something I would definitely be into!
I have a retro cave with a CRT, all manner of consoles (NES/SNES, MasterSystem/MegaDrive, C64 and Amiga) as well as a vinyl record player. Would be nice to have the TV contribute to the record-listening experience.
That CRT boombox idea sounds perfect for Raspberry Pi. Somehow have audio line in > visualizer on raspberry pi > output the the TV signal
Technoptimistic sounds much like Kraftwerk in places.. Sounds great! :D
Probably worth taking a look at a raspberry pi, the earlier models have composite out and being Linux you'll find all sorts of software out there
The current models also have analog video out, but it's on the 3.5mm jack (the Pi Zero has a header for it)
Even current versions have composite out, but you have to break it out from the minijack and it's disabled by default
The latest models still has composite out. You just need to use the headphone jack with a breakout cable (on a standard pi) or solder the jack to pads on the motherboard (pi zero)
In theory, you could just pipe a line input into ProjectM and say job well done.
@@xureality I was just going to say, projectM, but the pie lacks audio in.
It does seem that the pie doesn't support ProjectM :(
The blurry video from the MultiMega looks absolutely fantastic, brings nostalgia
Super interesting video, thank you for covering it
Have you seen the King Kong Film on the Commodore 64? It utilizes the charset animation and digital audio to the max!
Dub CRT reminds me a little bit of Kraftwerk
Do you mean Technoptimistic?

The Commodore content was superb. Very progressive. The Megadrive one was guff.
Most of the C64 stuff didn't sound like music though.
Track at 4:17 actually sounds pretty dope. The rest are just kind of...weird, which maybe was what they were going for but honestly I hardly define the sounds as music.
Listen to Conrad schnitzler's "Krautrock" or Herbie Hancock's "Raindance" or even Karlheinz Stockhausen's "Kontakt" and you will know that it indeed music that is rather hard to get into for some people,
Personally i will admit i may be into some weird stuff that is near impenetrable.

Great video, it really highlights just how powerful the Sid chip is, it was way ahead of it's time (maybe it was from the future or alien technology).

That Dub CRT music is so crazy that I have to admit I that I really like it!
Remute’s album is available on Spotify ❤️
Just found it on Apple Music as well. Yay! (Added it to my collection)
I have dubCRT and I absolutely love it! I listen to a lot of experimental electronica so it was right up my street. Also, my 64 is hooked up to some nice monitor speakers through my mixer so the music is nice and fat and bassy too. 😊
I wish the unlocking of the remix module wasn’t so oblique an led arcane though as I really want to play with that.
A music album on a Genesis cartridge?! That is so down my alley!
Thanks for sharing, Techmoan!
Weird, different, and cool. Thank you for posting!
Dub CRT is the type of stuff I'm into
I think a potential solution would be a micro-computer with some audio visualizer software and the video out going to the boombox....
That's my thinking. This sounds like a job for a Raspiberry Pi Zero.
I came here cause the 8 bit guy told me so... I am glad he did so!
Good video! Subscribed!
That Atari cartridge is a real scifi adventure. I can almost imagine it being some sort of mysterious 1960s alien artifact with images and sounds beyond human comprehension left on the doorstep of some unsuspecting Atari fanatic. Either that, or in they just wanted to create something that would go perfectly with that clip of Hank Hill going "It's all toilet sounds!"
Dub CRT didn't thrill me. Technoptimistic reminded me of Kraftwerk. I wonder what Anders Jensen could do?
Maybe something a bit more familiar? czcams.com/video/KQtzaED5moA/video.html
Yeah I immediately thought of kraftwerk aswell. Super cool.
That Dub CRT thing is a-maaa-zing! I'd want a C64 just to play an experience like that! What a wonderful piece of retro avant-garde coding art.
That is really interesting! Really cool niches!
I really love how bass and drum sound on Mega Drive
Wow neat. What's next? Movies on game cartridges?
*hint hint* do GBA video */hint*
I'd like to see it, especially from a technical perspective and why they can't be played on via the gba player (or whatever the GameCube accessory was).
Otherwise the actual video quality was shite....too compressed.
Ooh I know the Answer. It is quite clever.
The Gameboy Player gave some special features to games that support it (such as rumble and multiplayer for Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga). The way it announced that it is Gameboy Player enhanced was not through a pin on the cartridge but by putting the gameboy player logo on the screen, then a gameboy player will recognize the logo and tell the game to activate the advanced features.
Because the Gamecube had no way to detect whether someone is recording like the Playstation 2 could. Majesco just CYAed and put the Gameboy Player logo on screen. Then if the Gameboy Player asked for enhanced features it disabled itself.
That also explains why to show the "Not Compatible with Gameboy Player" they first show "Gameboy Player" and then "Not Compatible with".
Edit: Also, why the eck would a pirate try to distribute 160p 8fps video. with worst compression than CD video on a CED videodisk.
@@mrmimeisfunny thank you very much! I honestly had no idea. That was very informative!

I love that first one. Awesome tracks!
Hey Techmoan, awesome video as usual! Have you ever heard of the YM2017 Sega Genesis cartridge album? It was released by Catskull Electronics back in 2017 and features an LED matrix visualizer on the board which can be seen through the translucent cart, it's really neat! The music on it was submitted by various artists, and only a select few were chosen out of them all due to storage limitations (I made it on there btw, I composed Festicity Zone!). The carts are long sold out, however the album did get a vinyl release through Yetee Records, and I collaborated with Catskull to put out a cassette release on my label, Lazer Burn Audio, which also contains all the other music that didn't make it on the cart! As of writing this, there are still several vinyl records available of it, and although the cassettes were a pre-order I ran, I still do have a couple unlisted extras, willing to send you one if you'd like! Also I did a full rip/showcase of the cartridge edition here, from a model 1 Genesis: czcams.com/video/pQriIFzEtQc/video.html
