    Even though we're cis women, my mom and I got on the topic of trans surgery options (one of the stranger rabbit holes for a convo with a parent, but whatever) and I mentioned that options for trans women seemed way more advanced than for trans men. She is a conservative republican Christian but without missing a beat she says, "Because surgeons were all men." That random bit of wokeness from her was so shocking I nearly fell off my chair.

    • @bryntendo
      @bryntendo Před 5 lety +415

      Conformist138 That genuinely is a root cause for some of that, but phalloplasty has been around since the '30s, originally for cis men who had lost their penis in war or suffered some other kind of penile mutilation or a congenital thing like having a micropenis. Cis men _love_ their penises, so you'd think the surgeons being men trying to replace other men's lost penises would mean phallo would be more advanced, lol. But even in saying that, phalloplasty _is_ actually an _incredibly_ advanced procedure, and modern phalloplasty is so advanced it's like science fiction when compared to its beginnings. Phallo isn't 'less advanced' than vaginoplasty, that's just a common misconception

      @BlueGeen Před 5 lety +130

      Nanacka Plus I feel like it's the difference between something that goes outward vs inward, or like, having something you don't want vs. lacking something. You brush up against your chest and feel your breasts a lot more, you're more aware of them. Since your vag is all up inside, you're not usually feeling anything.

    • @heyitssjace
      @heyitssjace Před 5 lety +155

      Well yeah... Same as trans women typically have more bottom dysphoria than top dysphoria.
      Being a trans male on T doesn’t get rid of your chest. And there are things like packers + STPs that can alleviate bottom dysphoria. You can bind, yes, but that gets very annoying + dangerous based on your dysphoria (I’ve had a friend who bound with duct tape at a concert + broke his ribs).
      Being a trans female, it’s harder to hide a penis or an erection. Sure, there’s gaff underwear, but things like having a prominent chest are more dysphoric to most trans men, as having a penis is more dysphoric to trans women. (But also: trans women on E get breast growth).

    • @keiths2902
      @keiths2902 Před 5 lety +53

      Jayla Funk yeah, in terms of surgery we get fucked. Breast augmentation is common enough that it’s a cheaper, well honed practice and scars way less, andway less obviously than top surgery. Our bottom surgeries are RIDICULOSLY expensive. More easily detectible as being well,,, not what we were born with. And the function isn’t even there if you go for phallo, since we have to get rods. I would absolutely be fine if I could get a functional penis (phallo) that required some daily thing, as in the stretching that has ro be done for vaginas, if it would only look exactly like a cis penis, and retain full feeling (another thing that we have to give up).
      It’s weird because we luck out in hormones. Testosterone works pretty good, it’s a stronger hormone. But in surgery, it’s ... grim.
      Sorry to be a downer, just super dysphoric and hate that there aren’t really options. It feels hopeless, ’cus all the money in the world still couldn’t magic wand the disadvantage we have for our surgeries

    I love and respect you and what you do so much, Jamie. This video has been extremely educational, so thank you for your effort and openness.
    I just wish that some transmasculine people would at least mention that not every person who starts HRT with testosterone will, in fact, experience noticeable growth. I follow a bunch of trans men on CZcams and many seem to brag about their massive growth and all of them naturally claim that one does grow a 1-3 inch penis on T. (Not that you are bragging, that's not the impression I got at all! But some others frequently do...) Anyway, my lower anatomy has barely changed at all for the past 2.5 years I've been on T (apparently, many cis women have a bigger **** than I do now) and so their updates leave me feeling frustrated, discouraged, dysphoric, like an error. I do not want to get phalloplasty because of the scarring (among other reasons) and I had never heard of metoidioplasty until now, but given the fact that I didn't even grow anything resembling even a micropenis, I'm super disappointed that this is not going to be an option for me either.
    As I said, Jamie, it's absolutely not your fault that your video triggered my dysphoria, I've just noticed it so frequently with other CZcamsrs as well that I needed to get this off my chest somehow, and I felt most comfortable opening up about my feelings in your comment section. I'm sorry for leaving this rather depressing comment, though. Maybe this issue could be used as a topic for another video so that more folks become more sensible about how differently hormones affect each individual and to let other transmasculine people like me know that they're not alone and, more importantly, that they're not abnormal. Being trans*, I'm often regarded as just that by society, but it's even sadder if my own community makes me think the same.
    Please know that I still love and respect you and that I don't hold being happy with your body against you at all! I'm happy for you, too! It's just the widespread message that having such significant growth is to be expected that bothers me and makes me feel less than. Okay, I think I've let it all out and I'm good now. Thanks for reading my comment.

    • @Jammidodger
      @Jammidodger  Před 5 lety +10

      Hey, thank you for feeling comfortable to open up here. I think this is a really important thing to talk about, and I'm sorry that this is a tricky subject for you, I can fully appreciate why.
      I know it's not on the same level, but before I started T I just heard loads of guys showing off their muscles and talking about how they got 'magic muscles' once they started T. I then expected something similar, and when it didn't happen, I was so disappointed.
      There's a lot of people out there who are happy to talk about all the amazing changes they've had, and making changes sound like a sure thing for others - I have been guilty of this myself in the past.
      But there needs to be more discussion about just how much changes can vary between people, and also the not so great changes.
      For the past couple of years, whenever I talk about changes I always try and say things could happen, or that this is likely to, etc...but do my best to not accidentally make it sound like any change is guaranteed.
      I think this type of topic would make a great video, and I might start working on something along this line!
      Thank you for leaving this comment, I think it's definitely a subject that needs more attention!

    I'm 3 months on T now. Transition surgery of any kind is not currently on the table for me right now because I have other health issues to contend with (they found a malignancy on my thyroid that I need surgery for first). Bleh. I definitely want top surgery and a hysterectomy, but I'm not sure I want any other bottom surgery. If I did I may go for the simplest option I recently read about - called a "clitoral release." It's basically the first stage of metoidioplasty without any of the other options (releasing the micro-penis from the pelvic muscle and vulva so it hangs farther outside of the body and in a more natural position for a penis). I don't know if I need/want scrotoplasty and I don't think I'll go for urethral lengthening either. Only time will tell if that changes for me or not.

    Thank you, I love this kind of video. I am leaning strongly toward meta (I am applying for pre-authorization through state health insurance already) and you echo a lot of the concerns I have about phallo, even though the results LOOK great and I would love an average sized outcome, it just seems REALLY intense and I don't think I'm up for that. I'm a masochist, but it sounds like too much for me.

      What's non-binary? Does it mean you are neither male nor female?

      @@maureenkidd6629 Yes exactly, I identify with something outside the gender binary (Male/Female)

    I completely agree with you that there are different people and they choose the option that will make them feel the most comfortable with and honestly I feel better after watching this video because you really know a lot about this stuff because I'm pretty young and don't know that much so I watch you. Anyway I loved this video even if I'm commenting on it very late. 😂
