Thanks for the review: one of my fears when I got my 05 LS430 UL was the "info" screen: as it was how you controlled so many things, if it went (I have 313000 miles on it now) I was in trouble: now I know there is a fix other than OEM (or junkyard), and might just upgrade to keep up with the times. The other is the air suspension, but... it really does ride well: not sure when I need to if I'll convert to the coilovers or bit the bullet, get the OEM bags and attempt it myself. Even with all of this, it best car I've ever owned, it just chews up TX highway miles but feels crazy modern for an almost 20 year old car. Thanks again...

Thank you. First thorough explanation I’ve seen of this setup and its functionality and compatibility. Reddit and forums all lacking crucial info. Gonna pull the trigger for ‘02 ML and add the backup camera. Will miss the period aesthetic a bit but the benefits are worth it.

Great review thank you. I’m in the process of buying either the Grom VLine line or go with this head unit. I do have a couple questions. How do you access the maintenance portion of the factory screen and the reliability of these units? -I’ve heard some of these units are not very good in terms of quality - any info would be appreciated- just sidenote to all who have LS 430s , the oscillating vents are based on the temperature of the vehicle and the temperature of where you have the climate control set. If you look at the owners manual, it will tell you the vents change direction and the amount of swing based on the temperature zones, you can find this information in the air conditioning/ navigation portion of your owners manual
If you're talking about the secret menu you can access with the factory infotainment, I am not sure if this head unit can do it. You can go into the Canbus settings in the unit like I did, though, and changhe quite a bit of stuff
Very interesting and helpful review. Thank you. I have the VLine which uses the native devise. That gives me the backup camera, but the screen is not as nice. As soon as I get in the car Car Play starts to set up. Usually takes about a minute to fully function, but I just leave the phone in my jacket pocket. I used to plug it in to the VLine unit, but it seems not to make any difference in terms of connection. Does yours use some kind of microphone for voice commands? VLine has this and I use it for Siri, or podcast or music requests through Spotify. Again, thanks for review.
Seems like the Vline is the best option. I am amazed at the cost considering they have not upgraded it. How long have you had yours and have you had any issues?
@@njackson18 Sometimes it's a little slow to connect, and recently I had a battery issue needing a jump and it didn't connect at all. Once I disconnected the battery to address that issue and then reconnected the battery, all the VLine settings came back. I was really glad about this because I feared I would have to take it to someone to have it all set up again. I would say that I use Car Play as a minimalist, for podcasts and spotify, maps or google maps works fine with it, and making hands-free calls. As for cost, I agree it is expensive, but I use it every time I get in the car. I actually had picked out a cheaper unit that was still $420 and the installer refused to put it in, claiming that his experience was that the screen would not last, and ultimately the unit would fail inside of a few months. I've had mine now 1.5 years and its as robust as when it was installed. So the price difference is worth it.

On an 02 would I have to use different settings in the CAV type set to work the A/C and heat to work or would it still be under the the 04-13 ls430?
Well you could try both options in the menu. I haven't tried it on an 02
Will this work on LS430 with navigation unit? I have a 2001 with mark levinson as well
Yes it will. I have mark levinson and had navigation
Can you still turn of the oscillating feature from the screen like you can on the factory head unit
I haven't tried that honestly. I think if you turn "auto" off it stops

Yes it does. You have to follow the sequence of inputs I showed in the canbus settings to get it to work
for the climate control; does first gen ls430 00-03 not show up as an option?
I think it is just a "high/low" option. I would just try both out and see which one works for your year
