Thanks for not being overly opinionated and arrogant, it's refreshing.
I feel like you've been watching the wrong photography channels :)
Tony Northrup
ha ha ha
A nail hit squarely on the head with the proper hammer and driven completely home.
Tony Northrup Tony I think you are one of the most honest pro photographer on youtube and I'm sorry all this fools are saying all this stupid stuff!
I agree with your view, but I also I think you're one who merely wants to make a point and not convincing people to change their view so again some comment against you are greatly exaggerated and inappropriate!
Thanks for your video always spot on and very informative you're helping me a lot in my discovering of photography!
Tony & Chelsea Northrup just subscribed, looking forward to watching your videos :D
You know, Tony and Chelsea are knowledgeable. But what I like most about them is, they are extremely modest.
this is one of the best explanations of the raw / jpeg differences thank u
I am amazed how you were able to explain Raw vs. JPEG without making people like me (JPEG users) feel as if we don't take photography seriously. I may only shoot for fun and (my) pleasure but I run into people all the time that make me feel as if I have wasted my money on my Nikon and should have just bought a point and shoot camera. Thank you.
Mari Hamm Thanks!
To be honest it depends on what you're taking pictures of and for what purpose. I mean smart phones are pretty capable these days of taking fantastic shots even to the point that they're almost comparable to DSLR's. However you don't get the control with lenses etc so they're not as good as a DSLR and most likely never will be.
If you just shoot for fun then probably no need to shoot in RAW and I wouldn't say buying a Nikon or any DSLR is a waste of money, again depends on the shots you wanna take, if u need to use zoom lenses for example then a DSLR is a great investment even if you're just shooting for pleasure and not commercially. Don't listen to the people who make you feel like you just have just brought a point and shoot, DSLRs give you the flexibility to create better images than any point and shoot is capable of due to the fact that DSLRs have interchangeable lenses and adjustable aperture etc.
Yes
All the versions have the same content, though the iPad version is definitely the coolest. If you buy the book using the third link in the description (from stunning digital photography) it comes with several different ebook formats, including a PDF that's nice to read on a PC.
i must admit Tony Northrup is one of my heroes and teachers here in youtube... Thanks for all the help!
Thanks!
Thanks, Wilson!! Don't forget to join the private Stunning Digital Photography Readers group on Facebook once you buy it.
Yes you can edit raw pictures with Photoshop Elements 11. I'm using the latest version of Lightroom (v5.something)
Very nice job staying on topic. Some others mention additional capabilities that they will "discuss in another vid". They need to follow your lead and not mention what they are not going to show yet because it needlessly takes up time and is distractiong. Clear, concise & on point. Thanks Tony.
Yes, you always share the JPGs. The advantage is that you can make adjustments to color and exposure using the raw data before saving them as JPGs.
Tony. Thank you.
It's so refreshing to see a photographer who speaks to you like a human being and isn't all arrogant and up himself.
I liked the video and subscribed just because of your personality. Thank you for the informative video and for being a decent human being.
I have to admit with ALL of the "helpful" videos and people out there (thanks for posting BTW) that Tony provides REAL help in the REAL world, stays on the task and has yet to piss me off by saying something stupid or acting! I'm a subscriber now, thanks Tony.
I adjust both to extract the most detail out of the highlights.
Tony I love your videos, thank you for taking the time to create them. You explain things very simply and easy to understand.
Yeah, the first thing I tried was to sync the settings, but visually they ended up very different. In other words, it just didn't work. So, instead, I adjusted them so they were at similar brightness and contrast levels visually.
Picasa is free too, and it works with just about any camera
You want to make as many adjustments to the raw file as you can using Lightroom (or your raw image editing app). As long as you don't export the files to JPG and then re-import those JPGs, Lightroom will make adjustments to the raw file. If you choose to edit a raw file in Photoshop, Photoshop will save it as a TIF file, which is bigger but better than a jpg. Basically, if you use Lightroom, it does everything correctly for you, so you don't have to worry :). Only export to JPG for sharing..
It's recorded in 720, so if you watch it 720 (and full screen or at least full sized on your monitor) you should see all the detail. I'm watching the CZcams version just to make sure nothing was lost in the upload, but it still seems clear to me. Honestly, the differences are only going to be important to those of us who are perfectionists about image quality. If "good" is "good enough", JPG might be fine for you.
I just purchased the Phantom 4 Pro and I watched your video on that and it taught me how to fly this thing now I'm watching your videos on how to edit Raw and I am blown away. I am in fact going to Ireland and I'm going to bring my drone with me and do JPEG and RAW so I can edit post I am new at this and I appreciate your tone of voice and your whole entire demeanor and ways you present things I subscribed and thank you for your hard work
In Lightroom, the raw file never changes--it's like a digital negative. Your changes are simply recorded and then shown to you whenever you view it. So, you can always undo your changes.
If you want to share a picture, you need to export it as a JPG, and the new JPG will reflect all the changes you made.
you are such a good teacher tony sir...thank you..
Strange, I didn't know Amazon Japan was shipping the paperback. I'm not even sure how they'd get it...
But, if you order it from the third link in the description, we'll ship it to you directly. Thanks for reading!
I stand by you.. because you make sense to me.
This was the most practical and demonstrative lesson on RAW and JPEG comparisons that I've seen by far. Awesome video! You're a really good teacher! Thanks for sharing!
You are a natural in explaining. Brilliantly done
Adjusting whites linearly scales the entire brightness of the photo, and if you raise it, it will start clipping anything near 100% white. Adjusting Highlights smoothly brightens or darkens a range of the brightest pixels in the image, without impacting darker pixels.
Same applies for blacks and shadows.
Really, the best way to figure it out is to play with them.
I was just wondering which was the better format, this helped immensely. Thanks
I learned to shoot just over the internet because I have no money now for the course and I must tell you that I am learning a lot from you and you are one of the most fun to listen to them and learn from them I have no doubt that I am going to buy your book :)
Thank you. Clearly explains what I wanted to know without "Hey what's up youtube" nonsense. Very professional and clearly shows you know what you are talking about very well.
wow - I really enjoyed your take on RAW and JPEG - I am a photographer who really LOVES PHOTOGRAPHY and the tech behind it - PLUS you explained it very well - Thank you Michael Nebula
I love the way you explain everything. You're very calm, clear, concise and knowledgeable. I had to switch from watching the videos of the fro with lips bc he had far too much attitude to sift through before you could actually get to understand what he was trying to educate the viewer on.
yes! agreed
Who is the fro with lips? Not familiar with a photo channel with a host sporting an afro.
Tony buying your book today, you sound like a great teacher thanks again
Yeah, you always want to share JPG files. Within Lightroom, I use the export tool before sharing. RAW is for your own storage and editing.
It really helps to see the images side by side. Thanks!
Picasa is free. I have a video about it in Chapter 1 of my book (links in the description).
Tony, your videos are the best ! Your way of explaining and teaching is the best ! There are many who teach,,but your command on the subject of photography is phenomenal. Thanks very much boss. Regards from India
i like the way you present this video. Simple but informative. Thank you
This is single handedly the best video on RAW that I've watched. You explained it extremely well and have great example of why to use it and how you edited raw.
Thank you very much. I shoot in Raw + Jpeg but have yet to edit any raw pics because I don't have LR or Capture One.
But now this video shows me how important it is to have and use.
DaveSincere nikon has some free editing software I think, but I haven't used any of them so I don't know how good they are. adobe does offer a photographer package that is photoshop and lightroom for 9.99 a month it's not to bad a price
DaveSincere Affinity Photo is also a New cheap and good Software for raw :)
Lightroom can correct distortion, whether raw or jpg. Lightroom does a better job of correcting aberration than the in-camera jpg processing, so perhaps that's what you're seeing.
That's the trade-off... generally storage is so cheap that I do recommend raw. It's not just for shots where you plan to do heavy processing, it's a great way to help ensure you or your camera don't mess up an important shot. It mostly just makes it easier to fix the things that go wrong.
But my camera (22 megapixels) fits about 1100 shots on a 32GB card, and cards of that size are pretty cheap nowadays.
Spent about 10 years trying to figure out what RAW is. Asked professional photographers. They couldn't explain their way out of a burning building. Looked at this video. Completely understand. THANK YOU for teaching. You would be a good trial lawyer.
I have watched a few of your presentations. Really enjoy them, very informative and well done. I'll keep on watching, thanks Tony and Chelsea.
Tony...THANK YOU..I have refrained from shooting in RAW because of the shear size of the files and thinking that what i shoot is good enough..I am finally convinced that RAW is a must.I have some great gear and shooting in jpeg has been awfully silly on my part..thanks again..
I haven't used Corel. I'll say that I really like Lightroom's handling of B&W images; you can adjust the brightness of different colors individually, much like we used to use colored filters when shooting B&W in the film era.
If you find something better, drop me a note at tony@northrup.org. I'd love to hear your feedback.
First rate explanation. Interesting to see so much detail recovered. Thank you!
Much appreciate your prompt reply, this really helped... i was doing it the less effictive way till now. thank you tony
Good video, I am a complete amateur, trying to learn the features on my camera. This explains the difference between shooting RAW and jpeg, in a simple, understandable way. Thanks
I am a beginner. I do not know much about these things... But this channel is just amazing... Tony and Chelsea do an outstanding job!
Tony, I've watched a lot of photography videos and yours are the best. THANKS!!
i'm glad i found your video. a friend told me about lightroom, so this confirms what i thought about getting one or the other. thanx a lot for the information!
Great simple explanation of RAW vs JPEG. So many people have such a hard time understanding why they should shoot RAW
Good to give examples while explaining the idea, it makes understanding more quick and easy. Thanks
just getting into digital photography, this video was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks Tony!!!
Great information thank you so much for taking the time to share this information
I have just watched an hour of your videos. Very informative! It has brought back my love for photography! Thanks!
Very informative indeed. I am looking forward to the practice exercises ideas in the book.
Hello Tony. Your videos were of great use for our next step. We bought our first DSLR and lightroom after seeing so many of your usefull vids. Thanks!!! You are an inspiration!!!
One of the best explaination
Thank you for this useful example of the actual difference of RAW vs. JPEG. best one by far.
I just found your channel and you are a great teacher.
in your first example you're moving highlights slider for RAW and exposure for JPEG. shouldn't you be moving highlights for JPEG as well?
good point, i was just about to make the same point... but i guess the information contained in RAW still gives you the extra data. But on q.
I saw that too... he clearly made a mistake
I noticed that too...
@@marginwalker01 i don't think it was a mistake. when he did the white balance he used 2 different points swell. I feel as if he is trying to make more of a distinguishment (not a word haha) not thinking people would catch it
if he lowered the highlights slider the sky will turn gray and gross when in raw that won't be likely to happen, but i think it was just a mistake when he lowered the exposure in the first one
Well, yes, but the point I was making was about how much of the sunburst could be recovered, and it still demonstrated that.
Thanks for the online clips. They all have a lot of common sense and would be a great place for a beginner to start!
Very well described..easy to understand with good examples...
I've always avoided shooting with raw because of the file size, but watching this video has convinced me to give it a try, at least in certain situations.
Your videos are just the best.Really easy to pick up,and I will be getting your book, you inspire me to get out there and just start shooting pictures.
this is the best explanation for the diff between raw and jpeg file.. my respect on you Sir.. thx u so much
Great video, I just had my daughter who is learning watch it. Now she wants LR at home since I use it at work.
You will get more noise however if you push the things too far.
Wow. I didn't know there was such a huge difference between raw and jpeg and the huge ability to edit the photos without losing info. Unfortunately the camera I used right now does not give the option to shoot raw. But the camera I get in a few months will. Yay for an upgrade. Great video!!!
Thank you so much for taking the time for this video! Now i actually understand, i have heard that shooting raw was better but never knew why. THANKS!!!!
Layla Tamez You're welcome, Layla!
Another great tutorial. Thanks Tony!
Simply one of the best JPEG vs RAW I've seen so far. Thank you so much !! It helped A LOT deciding to go for raw any time I can.
very clear and helpful please continue to share your knowledge, thank you
Best RAW vs JPEG presentation. Very visual.
im so jealous of all the travelling you've done! You were even in Glasgow - my home city, but you seem to have been just about everywhere!
WOW!!! I've always heard, especially from different videos on CZcams, that Shooting Raw is better because "You keep all the detail and can edit a lot more" but I had never actually seen an example of this until I saw this video. Thank you! That difference between JPG and RAW at @03:16 about what you can read on those bright screens is amazing! I'm definitely going to shoot RAW now. Main reason I didn't is because I'm a little cheap at times and I could get a lot more photos in my card with Fine JPEG Quality as opposed to RAW, but if getting better quality photos means having to buy an extra memory card or two, it'll definitely be worth it. Especially now after I see the difference.
Best Raw vs Jpeg comparison video - Well done! Thanks
Sorry, I'm not sure; I use Lightroom rather than Bridge. LR does automatically stack the related images, however.
Thank you! I'm still learning and this was very helpful.
Wow, thank you so much, this really did highlight the differences of me. I had no intention of shooting in RAW, but now I'm considering buying some post production software and really creating amazing shots.
wow finally a very clear explanation...only now can i understand why shoot raw even it takes up large memory spaces on my card.
Great video and explanation. I'm shooting Raw from now on.
Ok! I'm convinced!
Best raw vs jpeg video out there. Awesome video
perfect. Explained so well.
Thank you so much for this video and showing the comparisons. Very well done and just what I needed to understand.
Thanks for this Tony.
Practical demonstration in the "Stunning Digital Photography" book, which i am finding very useful since i bought it.
Shooting *.jpeg has one advantage in that in this day and age of instant uploading, if you do not have the time to post-process and want to share instantly, then jpeg is the answer.
But the shots are most likely not going to be top most quality, unless you manually set every variable on the camera setting before taking the shots.
I have hitherto been shooting jpeg, but now that I am using Lightroom, and upgrading from APS-C to full frame (Canon 5DMIII), hence, it will be mainly RAW, and occasionally jpegs.
Man you have no idea how much it helps! ThAnX
Super useful!! I've had so many situations where this would have been helpful, but I've never looked into raw photos until now. Thank you, sir!
Best instructor ever! Thx!
this is a very useful video that answered all my questions, thank you
Definitely will turn to use raw from now on ! Thanks Tony
That can happen, just buy the book and join the Stunning Digital Photography Readers group.
simple and brilliant explanation!! Thanks!
thanks for the upload. it's a good explanation without being overly complicated.
Beautiful presentation thanks much!
You must have a fairly new camera. Each camera body has its own proprietary format, so Adobe has to release updates. Make sure you have the latest updates to Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw and you should be good... though I wonder if you have to upgrade to Lightroom 4? I'm not sure.
thank you for your time, very well done.
