    Been doing photography for many years and my philosophy was, I never ever want to have to edit my pictures after so I got good at adjusting the camera on the fly to get the best pic I could get given the lighting condition. And I can't say I'm unhappy with my results, however, you may have convinced me to give raw a go. Since this was the best explanation I've heard and also a very good demonstration. Thank you for that!

    I consider myself a novice, but one thing I learned early on with my old Canon XSi was to always shoot RAW. I remember thinking how soft and bad everything looked when I first started using it until I realized that I had to do all that myself, but the end result was far better. Now I just need to get into actually editing photos.

    This was really helpful, David! You do such a terrific job of breaking concepts down in a way that's easy to understand. Quick question: If you shoot in RAW and then go back to the computer to edit the image to be what you like, do you recommend then saving the image as a jpeg + deleting the RAW file in order to save space?

    • @kristof007
      @kristof007 Před 2 lety +1

      If space is an issue, you could do this. Ideally, space is not an issue and you can keep your RAW file and then have a finished JPEG.

  • @ManySkills
    @ManySkills Před 3 lety

    This gave me more information in an easy to understand way than a year and a half of film school. (All we learned of RAW was that it let you punch in without degrading the image as badly and that you should only use it sparingly because it used so much space). If you ever wanted to do a video of alternate color grading software that doesn't need a subscription that would be really cool. :)

    Thank you for this. I knew that there was a benfeit in shooting raw but I didn't exactly know why. I"m not a photographer I just like taking pictures. I just got back from a bucket list trip to Alaska and happened to catch the Northern Lights. I got some AMAZING pictures. However, I forgot that I had circular polorizer filter on my lens so I think the pictures aren't as bright as they could be. Thankfully...I shoot all of my Alakan trip picture in jpg + raw. The only image editing I've down is a crop and maybe a little brighten of jgp that's about it. However, I"m going to get Lightroom and edit once in a life time Northern Light and Glacier pictures so that I can have them printed and hang them in my office. Thank you for this!

I just started doing Raw + JPG, I plan on just keeping the raw files on an external hard drive and then the JPGs in my Apple Photos. If I ever need a raw file, there it is, but I don't have to load up my personal life photos with huge files.

    Hey, what other information do i get with raw? I am currently thinking of a "new" typ of lidar technology, where i would need to know the "time" of each pixel of the sensor. Can i get this information with raw? I would want to have a "string" for each pixel, that tells me its intensity over time. so like if i take a "picture! for 1/10 of a second, what i want is a multiple "slices" of the picture. So like what happens in the first 1/1000 of the 1/10 and so on. the more slices i have the more information of depth i would get. (from the time the light took from the cameras flash to get back to the sensor with light speed i can calculate the distance for all the pixels, that are then lit)
    Is this something that is possible with the information within raw or would i need to develop custom hardware to get that kind of information from my sensor?
    Thanks if someone answers
