- Mount Cook/ Aoraki is New Zealand's tallest mountain and is a top travel destination for nature-loving travelers. Known as Aoraki, or "Cloud Piercer" in the Maori language, Mount Cook towers over the South Island of New Zealand and is the ultimate road trip destination in New Zealand.
Join me and my wife @CarrieRad on an unforgettable road trip to the tallest mountain in New Zealand in this cinematic short film shot on a RED Komodo 6K camera. Along the way, we stay in Lake Tekapo and visit the Instagram famous lavender fields before arriving in Mount Cook Aoraki National Park.
I'm Alex, I'm a travel filmmaker, photographer, and TV host. The view, the mountain, everything there is BREATHTAKING 🗻💖
Mount Aoraki reminds me that NZ is calling me & soon, i will be there in NZ & make it my permanent home.
Thank you Alex for making this video possible. NZ will be my 2nd home.
Always & forever 🇳🇿💖
Your words around 8 mins. Really spoke to me. A good reminder that we should chase connectedness. It’s easy to lose sight of that even living in the beautiful New Zealand. Appreciate the sharing in that moment. Welcome home
Thank you Luke. I’m glad to hear that the words resonated.
That's really beautiful. It's true NZ is the most beautiful place on earth
It’s definitely up there! Thanks for tuning in 🙏🏼
Great Mount cook Vlog, Thanks for sharing, Have a great week
Cheers Tony!
Absolutely beautiful video, Alex. Breathtaking scenery and wise words. Thank you for sharing. And my goodness, Carrie! Chocolate ice cream is the best! 😂
Thank you!!!
I love the way you and Carrie are growing. It's so beautiful to watch both of you blossom! Much love ❤️
Thank you Lara 🙏🏼❤️
I am so thankful for the life I have in New Zealand. I open my curtains every morning and see Mount Cook and feel grateful. Seeing it in your video up close is just breath taking! Thank you!
Wow! What a blessing to see that everyday. Thank you Elisha
I don’t have the blessing of living in the South, however we have a range of small mountains behind our off the grid up here in the Hokianga. The view from my back door is stunning. I will never tire of it. I love the changes in the weather, with the light, the clouds etc. l can’t live with out hills and mountains.
Relax, close your eyes, breath calmly and imagine a world without ice-cream xx
LOL 😂
This journey is so beautiful. I want to be there with you! Thanks for this!
This is one of your very best videos. Thank you.
Thank you Tobi! I appreciate the support
Absolutely breathtaking views. Beautiful mountains. All those feelings determine that you are HOME!!! Loved every minute of this video and specially your words. Keep safe guys!😘🤗🌼🇻🇪
Gracias Monique!!!
You guys are such a motivation for so many people! Love the story’s and i am so greatful that you take us with you on this beautiful journey.
Love from The Netherlands🇳🇱❤️
Thank you Sam! Really means a lot to read comments like yours. Appreciate the support. Hope all is well in the Netherlands, I love it there
What an amazing video! Lake tekapo was my favourite place to visit in NZ. Just stunning. Also I’m fully Team chocolate everything!
Tekapo is so cool that I actually forgot to film it except for that quick clip on my cellphone lol! Team chocolate for the win!
Proud how you make an effort to pronounce Maori place names. Your te reo Maori is already coming along in the time you have been here and with time and more exposure to it it will become second nature.
I'd sit on the tractor! They're kind of iconic around NZ and you may notice more of them on your travels. So I have indeed sat on several growing up.
Thank you Alana! Going to take some intro classes for Te Reo too!
The ending of this video was absolutely beautiful! 😍🙌🏽 the words and visuals!!! Just wow!!!
Thank you Becca 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Such a beautiful video again Alex. That icecream looked divine and I am definitely all for a chocolate icecream, especially one with brownie bits in it! 🤤
Thank you!!
I wish every New Zealander appreciated NZ as much.as you do.
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I think most of us do
Most north islanders have never been down south.truth...
@@andyashby9588 that might be majority true unless they have family down here or something lol
Renee jones i moved to auckland for 5 years from the south and 8 out of 10 people didnt even know where greymouth was!but they knew where bali was.lol
Your a great story teller! I’m feeln inspired and ice cream debates are worth having!
Bro, your sooo on point on how you are explaining your feelings and emotions being connected grounded....own it because that is exactly how home Aotearoa New Zealand makes you feel, my kids were born in Australia but I take them home often for that same reason and it has been one of the best things I could have done for them it has kept them grounded, thanks for sharing because I got to see apart of the South island keep up the great video's stay safe peace.
Wow, Amazing Video 👍👍👍
Love your videos keep them coming..
Thank you Shathi! Got another coming this weekend
I totally see the connection you have made with the land and you’re ancestors, its flowing through you and embracing you’re soul so that you know you are home.
Amazing video Alex you are a very talented man and a great orator.
I hope Carrie is getting these same feelings and open to it, as she is you’re other half to travel life with. I just adore you both and enjoy every upload. Can u adopt me too, lol.
You have a calming soul that resonates deeply within people when you speak your truth. It is a beautiful thing and I hope that u keep it coming.
Thank you so much for your kind words Michelle. We will keep following our hearts and share what we can 🙏🏼❤️
Brilliant inspiring video as usual. We'll done. 👏
Thank you Thomas. I appreciate the support
I feel like I'm visiting NZ vicariously through your travels! I miss the South Island so much, and watching your videos has been giving me the little taste of home that I really need until I can finally get back there myself.
Thank you Laura it makes me happy to hear my videos are helping you have a taste of home. Where in the world are you now?
@@AlexanderAyling In Sydney right now, which means I can finally visit now that the bubble has been implemented! I feel inspired to turn my trip home into a South Island roadie.
As a fellow Mainlander I feel the same,I'm in the UK and really miss the quiet, empty spaces in the South, not to many places in the UK to get away from the rat race.
Agree with Carrie! That lake water is unreal!
👏 Thank you for taking us with you. This is a treat for every Mother Nature lovers 🥰
Thank you for watching Marisa 🙏🏼
Thanks Alex for making these videos! I did my high schooling and junior high in Auckland. Never got to travel too much outside of there. Seeing these places makes me want to return to explore. Inspiring!
Hey Robin! Yes if you haven’t explored much outside of Auckland then yes you need to get back down here 🙌🏼
Another beautiful, peaceful and serene video. 👏👏👏👏👏👏 Thanks for sharing your journey with us. BTW I’m with Carrie about the chocolate ice cream 😆
Thank you Frauke 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🍦🍦🍦
Chocolate ice cream? Yes yes yes! 😁
👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
It is a beautiful part of the country and as a Kiwi from the North Island it's astonishing to learn of friends of mine have never been to the South Island. I must admit though, if my husband was not offered a job in Queenstown then I probably would never have ventured down there, so thank you to my husband. We lived in Queenstown for 2 years, then Te Anau for 15 months and Greymouth for 3 years before we moved back up North. I am so glad we had the opportunity to really explore our own country.
I found it interesting to learn that the south island was referred to as the mainland or main island. It's so much bigger than the North Island but so much less populated. Stay tuned for an upcoming series, we booked a Great Walk down south for the end of the month. It's going to be awesome!
Thank you loved this. Making me homesick!
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Beautiful beautiful beautiful!
So many ‘yes, that’s it exactly!’ moments in how you filmed that day, what you shared, what it stirred in me. 💯
Thank you 🙏🏼
Thank you Jon!! Means a lot to hear my feelings resonate with others
Same🙋🏻♂️
Another great video, I'm enjoying my trip around New Zealand....thanks for bringing me along.
No question, chocolate for me. But Pistachio is also epic, my interactions with American friends introduced me to that flavour.
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
it's crazy how much you capture the way we feel about our untouched nature.. it's just too beautiful to ruin
It really is! Thanks Renee
That lavender farm looked amazing! Will have to add it to our list for our next trip down south.
Yes it’s a great spot especially when it’s in bloom
I wholeheartedly agree that vanilla goes better with lavender 💜
Hahahaha
I dig the relaxing vibes. The ASMR voiceover was quality, and your thoughts were very poetic. It seems NZ is bringing out the best of you (and bringing out Carrie's flaws) 🍦
I visited Mt Cook in the end of August 2019. That was my last overseas travel before the pandemic. And I definitely dream of going back to Aoraki so bad! Your video helped me relive those scenes. I also love the spiritual talks you do in your videos. Looking forward to more to come.
Camped at Lake Poaka, right around the corner, it was so beautiful, blessed to live in this beautiful country
Yeah it’s such a special place!
Thank you. What a treat!! Your words hit home too...... and come on a cholcolate potatoe would still taste epic!!!
Thanks Dave! Isn’t that what fondue is?
So wonderful! Love your words 💛
Thank you Emily 🙏🏼
I couldn’t agree more with you about how alpiney the South Island is. Having just been to Central Otago, it’s like a different country compared to the North Island. So cool having the absolute best of both worlds in one country!
P.S. I love a chocolate ice cream but can understand Carrie’s point of view.
We’re blessed down here aren’t we?!
@@AlexanderAyling very much so!
Beautiful words and magnificent views ❤️ Also, a chocolate ice cream lover here! 😜
Thank you guys for taking us on your awesome adventures!! 🥰 We love it!
Thank you for taking the time to watch, care and comment. 🙏🏼
@@AlexanderAyling I've been a follower of yours for awhile. You've helped me in my own travels. It's my pleasure to be a supporter of all the wonderful things you, your wife, and your sweet dog does! It's a breath of fresh air! Continue blessing the world with positive energy! 🥰
I have plan to go to Mt Cook in the next 2 weeks. And your video is so useful to me. I love your content, your story
Aww thank you! I hope you explore more of my videos as well ❤️
Prayers and Happiness from CA! oh my goodness, chocolate rocky road!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you!
A beautiful video meant to be seen by all those who appreciate the beauty of our world. One of my favorite parts is the poem at the end.💞
Thank you 🙏🏼
1) I would definitely sit on the tractor
2) I agree with Carrie... when going with something as different as lavender vanilla is a great choice
3) Chocolate ice cream is amazing
4) These videos just keep getting better
Hahahah 5) Bernard is the man.
6) I appreciate the layout of your comments, it’s easier to read 😂🤙🏼
@@AlexanderAyling 7) noted
So beautiful!!!
It’s really unreal
Agree with Carrie on all counts. Love chocolate, not chocolate ice cream tho 🤷♀️
This view is becoming more and more widespread
Just found your videos! Absolutely amazing. I’m going to be going to Aoraki/Mt Cook national park in two weeks so I’m glad to see how nice the weather is. Just hope it stays that way!
Awesome! I hope you get good weather but pack layers for sure
I agree with Carrie that chocolate would mask the flavor of the lavender
But mask it with chocolate which is amazing lol
I hope visit soon your country!!
Great video mate!
Cheers from🇵🇹
Obrigado Alexandre 🙏🏼🙏🏼
I love Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo. I went there last year in February 2020. I love your videos they show how amazing the scenery is! Lavender is such a beautiful plant. I love the ice cream we have in New Zealand its so delicious. Yes to chocolate ice cream. My favourite is probably mango.
Thank you Rachy! Mango ice cream sounds so yum!
beautiful video thank you!!
Why would you want to be anywhere else :) New Zealand offers so much that feeds the soul
👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
Love and miss the south..awesome vids bro!its spiritual man you can feel it..the land is alive.rugged beauty at its best.
Totally agree 🙏🏼
Hey alex i grew up in greymouth on the west coast.if you end up passing threw there go checkout the cobden tiphead i learnt to surf there.you might need a thick wetty it can get abit cold.lol.hopefully its not too big.can get over 15ft sometimes mainly in springtime though so you should be right!and sorry man im with your wife on the choclate icecream.im a boysenberry fan hard.lol
Lovely video! Carrie is right! Vanilla ice cream is so simplistic, added flavors enhance it.... chocolate is a strong, single note flavor for ice cream🍦
I’m learning that she may be right here ;)
You are definitely a poet.
Awww thank you 🙏🏼- just putting into words the feelings flowing through me ❤️✌🏼
Great video. Your narration was very poetic. I hope to visit NZ one day.
Thank you Edan 🙏🏼
I agree with The Rad about the chocolate ice cream
So glad you got to explore my fav place on the world. Anytime I need to healing I get away to the Mackenzie. Lived there as a kid, but get back as many times as I can.
Safe travels folks.
Such a special place. Cheers Paul!
"As long as I live, I'll hear waterfalls and birds and winds sing. I'll interpret the rocks, learn the language of flood, storm, and the avalanche. I'll acquaint myself with the glaciers and wild gardens, and get as near the heart of the world as I can." Inspirational video.Happy Adventures! Cheers, Domenico.
Beautiful words! Are they yours?
@@AlexanderAyling It's a quote from John Muir.
Wow 😳 South Island is so beautiful 🤩
Isn’t it amazing?
Really spectacular 🥰
🙏🏼🙏🏼
Hey I'm Aelin and I live in Auckland in the North Island, but my ancestry comes from the South throughout the Canterbury regions around Akaroa, so my iwi is Ngai Tahu - I am of European and Maori descent. I love that you've made Aotearoa your home and I'm living for these breathtaking shots of my homeland. I miss the South Island so much, I'd do anything to go back and live there one day. Thank you so much for seeing the beauty and the rawness of the mountains, lakes, and rivers, for realising that it's meant to be untouched and viewed from afar, but never toiled with. It's the most beautiful thing in the world to me and I hope that it continues to be that. Glad to hear that you both are enjoying your time here, I wish you both well on your journeys!
Kia Ora Aelin, thank you for sharing your story and for watching my video. Isn’t the South Island just magic?! Cool you can trace your iwi there. My family emigrated to Southland in the 1860s so I feel you there
@@AlexanderAyling No problem! Yes I agree profusely! It's straight out of a fantasy novel or movie, almost literally with the LOTR series haha. Wow that's amazing! I definitely feel like you feel it in the blood almost. There's that love for the wonders of the vast lands that just speak to you like a long-lost friend or family member - sounds strange, but it is most definitely magical! Kia ora!
I truly enjoy your poetic acknowledgments of your surroundings at the end of the video!! Magical full moon blessings to you and Carrie and may it give you the courage and the self love needed to assist you in releasing that which no longer serves you!! Looking forward to the next vid!
P.S. Recipe for them tasty lookin' Moroccan potatoes/hashbrowns? PLEASE!? haha
Oh!! And YESSSSS to chocolate ice cream..Sorry Carrie 😳🙃😁😅✨✌️
Thank you so much Chantalle 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Got to give it to you Alex. If Chocolate is on the menu you just can’t skip it as a choice. It is one of the best. How dare you think different, Carrie 😅 Great video once again, so magical with wonderful destinations and stories about the land.
Morenā whānau ☀️ hope everyones Anzac weekend is going well 😁 love seeing the uploads! Feels like I’m travelling our beautiful country too 😂 stay safe fam 🙋🏽♀️
Thank you Camren! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
This was beyond stunning. The words you spoke really made me feel like I was there and your reflections at the end brought tears to my eyes. Wow. Now I just want to go be in nature!! Thank you for sharing your journey and reflections. You and Carrie both inspire me greatly! 💛
Also! Chocolate ice cream is sooo yummy!! Sorry Carrie! 😅
Aww thank you so much Kristen. Comments like yours keep me inspired and sharing. Thank you
I watched about 30 seconds of this vid this morning and suddenly needed to be out in nature. I told my bf, let’s go for a hike! (CO natives here, the Rockies are always calling 😆). We had to put our doggo down on Friday and the hike was incredibly healing for both of us. I’m now sitting down to finish watching this beautiful vid. Seriously, thank you for the inspiration. Nature is the best healer.
I’m so sorry to hear about your dog Jess. We cherish each moment with our little fur friend and our neighbors here just had to put their dog down too. It’s tough but it’s part of life I guess. Nature heals though. Glad you had a nice hike :)
I respect the fact that you pronounce the Moari names correctly
Doing my best. Need to keep learning though
I have to agree with Carrie on the chocolate ice cream issue! Only true chocolate lovers can understand how chocolate ice cream is a waste of chocolate (and ice cream) 😂
Aghhhhh blasphemy!! Hahah
Same 🙋♀️
I agree😆
My point exactly. Thank you!!! 🥰
I love chocolate ice cream (Belgian chocolate) more so than vanilla. However If I was to go to a lavender place that sold ice cream, I would be in the same boat as Carrie as I would want to taste the lavender. Sorry Alex!
Definitely, #teamvanilla 💛
One of my favourite spots in NZ, we often holiday the Mackensie country. My husband proposed at Mt Cook so extra special spot to us
Awww so cool! What a special spot for your family
Your voice over made me think of Rodney Yee’s yoga videos- quite soothing. Thanks for sharing the stunning landscape of New Zealand.
I don’t know that channel I’ll have to check it out 🙏🏼🙏🏼
by far the greatest country on earth imo
Loving it, as always. That offer of a beer at a rooftop bar is still open :-)
Which bar Leon?
@@AlexanderAyling The Pink Lady. Its on the 7th floor of the Muse hotel
@@AlexanderAyling sorry, missed this. Pink Lady bar. Great cocktails and food. Have just shifted to Tauranga now though.
This video was like taking a tranquil and serene journey!! Thank you so much for sharing New Zealand with us all, Alex.. The stunning views will never get old or cease to amaze!! Much light and peace! 💛👏🏼
Thank you Anna 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I’m totally with Carrie on the ice cream topic. Love chocolate, but chocolate ice cream for me would be waaaaay down the list. As a kiwi, my all time favourite flavour would have to be hokey-pokey, followed by maple=walnut and then perhaps goody=gumdrops haha!
Hokey Pokey for the win
Chocolate ice-cream, nup... she wins! 🤣
Stunning. Maybe a little overwhelming, the beauty.
I'm with you Alex on the chocolate ice cream. I mean how about a scoop of chocolate and peanut butter ...........
It is at times overwhelming
needed this video today 🤍
🙏🏼❤️
Beautiful. The 3 times I have driven there it has been pouring rain!
This is so good man! Definitely going to visit NZ one day, always been a dream.
Thank you Frederik 🙏🏼
Ur videos makes me homesick 💖

I prefer vanilla with lavender ice creams. It blends perfectly 🙌🏻
You’re not alone haha
