Master's degree in audio production here. Been using this fabulous video to study, the graphics make it so clear, and so easy to understand. Great content!
This is the best video I've seen so far explaining the polar patherns a Mic can have. The 3D figures shown to demonstrate the polar patherns (Cardiod, Figure 8 & Omni) are the best part. Congratulations!!!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the way to demonstrated the different patterns visually as you stepped around the mic. I had no idea how to make sense of polar patterns (another new term I learned today) up until today because I was shopping around for a new headset/mic combo for streaming. (Before y'all say it, this is just one step. I'm ultimately buying a better headset and standalone mic a few months after this one.) I had no idea what directions the graph was showing me for the headset and it almost made me think it picked up in a totally incorrect direction. Thank you for this awesome video!
You know, I built a iso booth for my vocal mic work and I also use a c414 but I've always set it on cardioid - but hell Omni sounds way fuller! With the iso booth you don't need to worry about bleed anyways so I think I'm going to switch to omni. I think it would be awesome for a male vocal baritone like me. Thanks so much for this!
Thank you very much for this. You have been EXTREMELY helpful. I'm a voice actor, but not very well-informed on mics as I should be. You just raised my intelligence level by a LOT, with one simple video.
Subscribed. Just don't stop keep bringing more educational videos like this. People now a days miss videos like this that explains everything from the super basics.
Thank you for explaining this so much better than other videos that "bla bla" over the technical aspects expecting the viewer to already know how everything works. Turns out I had my cardioid mic setup completely wrong this whole time ... doh
I wish you would have gone a little more Into WHY you might use these different patterns, but it was still a very informative vid. In a lower end bedroom studio, I would probably want a cardiod mic for vocals to get the least amount of room noise?
How come I can't see my pickup pattern bubble?? Har har I'm so funny. This was a great video, very good production quality and informative, concise. Definitely surprising from a smaller channel. Great work. Multiple camera angles, lighted properly, visual on screen graphics. Just really good.
Thanks for the explanation and illustrations :) Very informative! WAS looking into buying a mic for my flute. Knowing nothing about microphones, your video helped me on which mic to buy! Much appreciated! Thanks again!
I has asked this question one the guitar YT channel & was told to ask Victor the question here. Are the Earthworks Mics good for recording guitar cabs? I don't know the model off hand but it's in the $499-599 price range US Dollars. Thank's in advance.
Hey, thanks for your question! Yes, the Earthworks SR25 is a great mic for electric cabs and acoustic guitars. With electric guitar however, I'm generally addind in a condenser mic like the Earthworks SR25 in conjunction with my "main" guitar cab mic, which is usually either an SM57, R-121, MD-421, or 409. We go through all of this and more inside the Recordeo members area in the Ultimate Guide To Recording Guitar if you wanted to check it out, hit up recordeo.com Thanks!
I don’t understand what’s the use for super cardioid- that little lobe behind it, what is it intended to pickup? So for singers, it means cardioid is the best choice?
thanks for the explanation! very very helpful! Do you have videos where you show how to mic instruments with these patterns? For vocals I find figure 8 to be the best with a vocal booth/shield. Somehow it sounds very nice and rich.
What microphones would you recommend to record 360-degree sound without using an ambisonic microphone? There will be four 360-degree cameras and motorbikes will ride around the cameras. I thought of using four rode ntg3 mics, but they are too directional, or two octal mics.

Don't worry, in due time... :)

This is the best description of mic pick-up and directional references! Like a $2,000 university course for free! Thanks!!!!!
I thought all mics were the same, but after watching this video I've gotten a better insight on the differences. Much appreciated!
This is the best video I've seen so far explaining the polar patherns a Mic can have. The 3D figures shown to demonstrate the polar patherns (Cardiod, Figure 8 & Omni) are the best part. Congratulations!!!
This is still the best demonstration of polar patterns I've come across!
This video is a life saver to me at the moment. Great work I appreciate.

This explanation combined with the 3D models/shapes is nothing less than perfect!

I don’t understand what’s the use for super cardioid- that little lobe behind it, what is it intended to pickup? So for singers, it means cardioid is the best choice?
Great Explanation 👏🏼
great explanation!
So basically if your just going to sing into the mic, go with the AKG C214 since they both share the same capsules.
Are sure of your drawing for the cardioïd ?
Why there is no indicator on these cardioïd mics ,only the capsule and it works all around for me.
thanks for the explanation! very very helpful! Do you have videos where you show how to mic instruments with these patterns? For vocals I find figure 8 to be the best with a vocal booth/shield. Somehow it sounds very nice and rich.
I am wondering if you could recommend any microphone that is sensitive and can connect to iPad for voice typing, please?
7:44 what you're listening to is the sound bounce off the wall that he's facing and back into the front of the mic.
Informative but enjoyable 👍
Great video! really. Thanks!
BEST CHANNEL!!!!!!!!!!
Hands down the best idiot proof guide to pick up patterns; Great job!
Great explanation thank you...♥♥💪💪
Thanks, what is the difference between hypercardioid and supercardioid mic? Which one is better for outdoor filming?
Thanks for the vid. much appreciated.
which one is best for vocals?
How do you have such a deep but clear sound with just a lavalier mic? Is there an EQ secret sauce or is it your room?
Thanks :D
Can you please tell me which shock mount you are using it will be very helpful for me?
what different cardioid and uni directional? which better?
Its good for duet
I wonder what the purpose of each design was for
Wow this Video is very helpful 🇿🇦👌❤️🥇🏆

Aloha! My name is Sean and I work with Aixdsp. What's the best way to send you our plug-ins?
I would've loved to see real life application for these different polar patterns.
Great vid
Okay but do they have one that is super focused? What's the characteristics of the lapel mic?
Thank you for this :)
