    For any newbie who is as clueless as I am and was watching summaries hoping to know more about the Baldur's Gate itself, apparently the "Baldur's Gate" is NOT an actual gate to somewhere, but the name of a city named after a regional large gate.
    "Baldur's Gate, also called simply the Gate, was the largest metropolis and city-state on the Sword Coast, within the greater Western Heartlands. It was a crowded city of commerce and opportunity, perhaps the most prosperous and influential merchant city on the western coast of Faerûn. Despite its long-standing presence as a neutral power, the leaders of Baldur's Gate were members of the Lords' Alliance of powers in the west.
    The strong peace-keeping force known as the Watch, along with the presence of the powerful Flaming Fists mercenary company, kept the city generally peaceful and safe. This inherent sense of security allowed the Gate to keep a tolerant and welcoming attitude towards outsiders, whether they were wealthy merchants, poor refugees or, as it historically attracted, less-scrupulous individuals such as pirates and smugglers."
    "Baldur's Gate was divided into three main sections, as shown in the map to the right. The Upper City was the walled region to the north. The Lower City was the portion between the Old Wall and the River Chionthar. The Outer City was the shantytown that rose up along the roads to the city and around Dusthawk Hill."
    "People and things from Baldur's Gate were known as "Baldurian". The term "Balduran" was never used-misusing the founder's name even like this was a grave insult to his memory and the city alike. Balduran was a legendary seafaring explorer and namesake of the city of Baldur's Gate."
    Now I know. As to why it's being spoken of in that wiki in a past tense.... idk, maybe I'll find out in the game or maybe as it just talks about the past it refers to it as "was"...
    Thanks for the summary, it was much better than gamestops tbh!

      It's spoken in the past tense because the wiki is like that, there isn't a reason but for flavour

    • @UmbraKrameri
      @UmbraKrameri Před 21 dnem

      The past tense was really confusing for me when I started to play dnd and consulted the canon lore because it made it hard to distintuish the pieces of lore relevant to the present of the game. But I believe it might be like that because of the Tolkienien roots of the high fantasy genre where he basically set up his world as a long ago predecessor of our world.

    So I just beat BG3, took me 107 hours cause I just kept wandering and getting into things and I kinda have OCD when it comes to completing quests. I probably would've done it all in one sitting if it weren't for the limitations of the human body. That aside it is such an absolutely beautiful and amazing game. I came here to learn more about the world of Baldur's Gate and you sir, delievered. Thank you

    Some more details:
    -The events of the BG books are no longer the only canon (read next bullet point). Abdel Adrian is no longer the canon Bhaalspawn.
    -The events of the 5E's Second Sundering (that culminated in Lord Ao rewriting the Tablets of Fate) rewrote the canon for the BG series. This is because in the original canon Jaheira was dead, Minsc was just some readhead barkeep, etc.
    -In the NEW canon, it is implied that when Lord Ao rewrote the Tablets of Fate he cherry picked details from multiple realities and put them into the new canon - the NEW canon Bhaalspawn is now just some faceless character (left to the player's discretion). In this new canon, characters from most of the classic D&D cRPG games (including Deekin the bard and Linu Laneral from Neverwinter Nights, and Minsc/Jaheira/Viconia from the BG games - note that the IWD and BG games were connected through Xan, and so BG/IWD/NWN/NWN2 are now all loosely connected through canon) appear as they do in the games.
    -It is implied from their behavior that these NPCs probably come from different realities - so they CAN be the actual NPCs you - as the player who played these games a certain way - traveled with. This is partly because their appearance is (most confusingly) acknowledged BOTH retroactively ("Oh hey, it's the heroes Minsc and Boo!") and non-retroactively by powerful individuals ("Who? I've lived over 400 years and who are these people again...?"). I suppose player DMs are supposed to sort out that mess themselves.
    -This further implies that some alternate reality is probably one Minsc and Boo short, but it also means that in that specific reality, YOU(my dear player)R player character from whichever cRPG game you loved to play probably got the ending you wanted. It's a nice nod to players from all the D&D cRPG games of the 90s/early 2000s.

Second game is siblings fighting each other but this time it's an evil wizard coming after you. The DLC is all the siblings fighting in a war and it doesn't matter because after they all die Bhaal respawns.
