2 common welding tests given by shipyards, welding schools, and local union schools are the 3g and 4g Structural plate tests. This video is intended to help you pass a Dual Shield Flux Core welding test in 3g (vertical) and 4g (overhead) positions. A big Thanks to Andrew Cardin for helping me make this video, and also a big thanks to Triangle Engineering (trieng.com) for providing the test plates.
And last but not least, thanks to Lincoln Electric for letting me use their stuff for this video. - Jak na to + styl
I never ran flux core in my 5 years of welding, got a new job opportunity that required it for my test and watched your videos for tips and tricks to help out, 1-shotted my test no problem and got the job. Thanks so much for the uploads!
This is the most beautiful example of overhead flux welding I have ever seen!
I've did my two years technical welding and have good welding work experience these days. After school I chose a job welding only aluminum all day then a few years later nothing but stainless .There's so many materials and processes it's challenging to be proficient in everything. Your videos always help me succeed. Thank you sir
Thanks for years of excellent advice Jody! You are my "go to guy" online. Anytime I need any refreshers, you've got my back!
thank you brother Jody we have no idea how much has helped me. by trade I'm a ship fitter but trying to maximize my trade by becoming a structural welder in the shipyard great tips and beautiful videos keep up the good work
Thank you for this video. I tested for this yesterday and gotta bad burn on my "trigger finger." We don't get much help/guidance, but now I know how to do it, thanks to your video. I go back to the course tomorrow, and even though my finger is swollen & infected, I know I'll "nail it" tomorrow. I'm so excited; thanks again. : )
Good video 👍 I'm Canadian and going to do a 2 year check test next Friday. 1st pass vertical up with a stop and start. 2nd pass overhead with a stop and start then fill overhead
Beautiful bead and weld with flux core. Absolutely great video!
Thanks for doing a video on .045 wire, that is what we use at work. Great video as usual.
you have the best welding videos out there, the camera and camera angles show the weld puddle sometimes even better than a person can actually see while under the hood. i have never heard you say f.... this and f... that... keep up the professional welding video lessons... great job Jody
Very true, I would agree with above, you just make it look easy jody
agreed homeboy
Awesome vid!! Flux core has really grown on me great process!
Great demo Jody.
Just received my stubby gas lens kit - thank you.
your videos are shown in my welding school, just FYI. keep up the good work jodi
hey cody...thanks for the vids!!! i learned with you and you made all my projects enjoyable...
Thanks nice info, one thing that wasn't mentioned always brush the slag between passes. I've welded this test with stick, also I've welded dual shield for alot of heavy fab.
Thank's for all your videos. Very constructive and helpful.
Have a 3 g flux test tomorrow morning, your videos have helped so much, I'll be able to sleep tonight haha. Thanks
How did it go? Did u pass ur test??
I see a lot of people commenting requesting the fcaw-g with ceramic backing test plates. That would be an awesome video to put out, seeing there is very few if not any instructional videos about the process. It is a very common test in the shipyard, so maybe you could give it some thought Jody.
nice demo jody, it would be nice if you can educate people about welding wire and shielding gas/gases mixture as they have dramatic effect on weld penetration as well as on tensile properties and its also important for people to know to use the right wire for this position as not all the wires are manufactured to use in all positions welding.
gosto muito dos vossos vídios, sao muito bons e voces sao bem divertidos.
i needed this video a month ago when i was trying out for the boilermakers... bet i pass next time ;-)
Always run as far as you can onto your runoff tabs! He stops to close to the edge of the plate. He is a good welder and can get away with it, but if you’re learning stop at the end of runoff tabs or else you may have an issue.
great tip, the problem is that here in Brazil, in some tests that we do inspectors do not allow this kind of support for the arms or let the hanging torch, it makes it very difficult.
How much you guys get paid in Brazil ? I'm getting pretty tired of America
Good video as always
Beautiful beads.
Merry Christmas freind s tanks for your
after I saw a welding technique with triangular shaped "stitches" in one of your last videos, everything else looks somewhat simple. I realize that the complexity here comes from welding upside down, though.
thank you for all the refresher tips. been out of school a while and only use bare wire with 75/25 shielding in this area. have a weld test tomorrow and this helped brush up on flux core. makes me proud to see welders helping welders make more money. here in Arkansas companies do there best to keep wages low. So the onlh people they hire are half ass "welders" and I use the title loosely, because they consider themselves welders b/c they can pull a trigger and make a stringer that I would consider embarrassing if I did it. anyway.... thanx again.
Hey Jody! If im not mistaken, in this and previous dual shield videos you were using 75/25 gas right? Would be nice to see you weld with CO2, since i think its a bit more difficult and that is what they often provide here in europe shipyards.
Anyway very nice content glad you keep posting every week. Cheers
buenos cordones mi viejo saludos..... de venezuela
you should show a FCAW 3g ceramic test
Great tips
hey Jody ive got a question for you im doing production welding and was wondering what you would recommend i could use for a setting on my welder to not only be faster but have alot cleener weld im runing 0.35 on c25 in a Lincoln power mig 255 and right now ive been running 28.0v and 540ipm but i have a dingle barry problem lol could you help
Hi. I am from Indonesia. Your welding technique is very good, I would like to learn more with you. Please make me a video on how to weld the SMAW + FCAW combination, and please include the translation in Indonesian. Thank you
Nice video, but is there any chance you could show a 4G flux test with an open root, 1/16-1/8 land, and 1/8 gap?
Jodi. In your 3G plate video, you mention lowering your settings after the root pass is laid. And on this 4G video, Andrew starts out at 25 volts, 360 IPM, and you never mention a different setting throughout the video. Did he weld the stringers and cover pass at the same settings? Thank you for all your videos sir!
Great video!
Great job
Thanks a lot for the information, please and what about Fcaw open Root on 2-3-4 G position with and without ceramic in the back, is it possible??
I need advice, if using a 25 mm plate, what wire speed and voltage should we use
In Canada we do a single bevel at 30 degrees ... max reinforcement is 16th . Watching your video cuz I have to retest tomorrow and with the amount they charge hahaha I gotta pass
Thank's. Really intresting to see how does the back side of root look like?
I got a inch plate test tomorrow for vertical and overhead with flux. I for sure got vertical down but over head on the hand is alil challenging y’all got anymore other tips?
Can it be done in three passes if you have to use 0.052 71T? Ive never run it but have a test today for it. Pretty nervous.
Thank you
I have trouble with my stick 3g d11 I wonder if I can weld structures with flux core certificate alongside other welders with a stick 3 gd11 STICK certificate
I may be wrong but I'm not sure that would pass visual for some jobs because of what looks like an incomplete weld.
A god among welders!
Holy jeez, man! That was a clean test! I can't believe how bad ass that was!
Epic vid as usual
Hellonsir...waht is the best amperage and voltage for 4f fillet
Great video Jody but can you please do a 3g and 4g with ceramic tape aka ceramic backing. There is us welders that work on ship yards. Navy specs are a little different that regular structural welding... thanks in advance
manuel chavez
Ummmm. Its impossible to run 4g with ceramic tape. Id like to see how burnt up you got.
Butch B not impossible at all. Had to do it for a job before
Im sorry. Your non running overhead ceramic tape
good video could u please give me the amps on all the runs
please tell me sir
Which nozzle is used for overhead position MIG welding?
Great video, once again. I was just wondering what shielding gas ratio you were using, because, typically, more CO2 equals a bit more penetration, which may require a bit less voltage per wire feed speed. My experience with a wire feed process has been just point and shoot, but with less forgiveness on machine parameters.
I just took my first welding test on a 1in plate, long story short it didn't pass! I had issues with my root, someone said it could have been because of the distance... dose anyone have any tips on how to get pass that?thanks...
For capping, what's the ampere & volt.. Mr. Jody..?
do it with out backing??
even on stick
my instructor at school did 4g no backing stick
he made it look easy
crazy this just doesn't work for me I must be doing something wrong, everytime I do my root pass on these settings I runs creates so much splatter my cup fills up and my weld looks terrible. I'm having tons of trouble.
I work at a company called Kiewit Offshore Services. How would I weld better with flux cored .052 wire overhead?
Thx!
Do a open root, with no backing.
No
That’s literally impossible with flux core
@@lukepatrick2032no backing is 100% possible on flux core. Its more difficult than hard wire for sure.
@@TheBiggerDavo post a vid of you doing it
This is my issue I'm having. I'm on my last plate test for nr232 in 4g. I can weld on a cruciform all day. But as soon as I get in the valley of the test (valley of the shadow of death) my puddle starts to build ahead of it self.
Did he lower his settings before capping?
leuk om ziens
The bracket do you put to rest the harms is a jock isn't ??
Don’t know if anyone will see this but I should I have a slight drag angle on 4g fcaw-g?
Thank you just started my test for the day hope it goes goood lol
There have back plate. I want to know FCAW 4g without back plate and come good root its possible?
Can any mig machine run dual shield FC?? Say a 140a machine with .035" wire?? Or do you need spray arc type, high voltages to get by?
nope. a machine that small won't be able to manage the voltage needed to run dual shield. 035 dual shield is going to want around 20v, at least. even if a smaller machine can produce the voltage, duty cycle at wide open becomes an issue. if you need to get as much as you can out of that machine, run self-shielded on 220v service.
Oi eu gosto muito dos seus vídeos só te pergunto se tem alguma possibilidade de colocar legenda em português muito obrigado
Colega faça um esforço e aprenda inglês
Gracias
Have a 3/8 plate no backing strip 4g test. Having problems with worm tracking. Running 045 1/8 root face 1/8 gap 21.5 325. Only on root. Happens no matter closer root gap or open. Any tips? Test on Monday
Clip a little piece of cloth on the wire or stick the wire through a little foam ear plug in between the spool and the drive rollers. It'll clean off the white oxidation that builds up on dual shield wires and might help.
Obviously this too late but worms I believe can be bad flux... Anyone correct if wrong or I misunderstood
Bang on guys like it👌
Good Weld
As far as cooling the work piece is concerned, do you recommend letting it air-cool or drop it in a bucket of water?
dropping in the bucket, are you serious?
I mean it can cause shrinkage...
if you're doing any kind of test, dropping it in water will guarantee you to fail as when you bend it it will snap in half. if it's just for your practice, then you can do that. but never do it on. any test
thats the reason jody is keep on saying that follow the wps. because you have the restrictions in pre heat and interpass temperature in order to control distortion. Dropping mild steel in water can cause a serious demage to metarial's grain structure.
Why even have run off tabs on each side if you're not going to use them?
What was the polarity?
i wanna see with no metal backing just open root and with basic wire.
Will a tig finger offer enough protection for a process like this
like in place of a glove? no, you need thick gloves, and a tig finger wouldn't do anything. think "tig" finger, thinner gloves.
What is the polarity?
4g weld how much root pass current and voltage
And finels pass carrent and voltage
Pls tell me
Wow buddy is robot smooth
nice
Dual shield overhead
Wire speed ?
CWB requirements are you have to do a stop and start That's Canadian
I just passed vertical I was doing my over head but I got burned all over
Good
The best
Vem pára o Brasil que nós te ensinamos a soldar 4G ?
Both ends not welded out ?
for aws they discard the first inch on both sides
He is also a great welder, so may be more sure of his weld. I believe running it past the weld piece is to reduced possible cracking?
Bismillah, pantaskan la hamba untuk bisa menguasai teknik ini dengan hasil yang luar biasa🙏Aamiin
Our school requires us to run a 3 bead cap for flux. I'm convinced that I won't get passed 4G and I'm so close. I only have 3 months of school left. Smh...
Mntap
Bonsoir
What gas? C25?
The testing stuff Is cool but in the field throw all of it out the window. I run into weird angles and spots up against walls using a mirror to see the other side etc. laying in a hole 12’ deep in a shoring box in the mud 1/8” wall pipe that’s 60 years old. That’s the reality of mobile welding.
I understand all that. Been in those situations myself. But Some jobs require passing this test before you even get hired so if you can’t pass the test you never even get to try anything else
That elbow-arm shield would have came in handy many times for all the overhead tests and welding over the years. Especially testing! Once you start the test and you get going good and molting metal drips down and is burning the crap out of you and all you can do grin and bare it until the end of the pass.
No muestran el cordón de raíz sin eso no es 4g
It had to be Jodie
See my welding
